As I adjourned the 2014 State Leadership Conference, I was overwhelmed with emotions, yet contented with the thought of returning to Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in June. Many of you are well accustomed with the resort and the activities offered, but keep in mind that the National Leadership Conference is more than a vacation. From June 25th-28th, the nation’s brightest leaders, the future of healthcare, will gather under the warmth of the Sunshine State. Your attendance in general sessions, ceremonies, and workshops will expose you to forms of interpersonal learning that will extend and resonate through you into your service. A launching pad, the 2014 National Leadership Conference will help you solidify your aspirations into realized objectives. For those moving on to the
final round of competitions, I will lend you the same advice that I did back in February: come with a plan and with resolve. A culmination of a year’s worth of hard work, this National Leadership Conference will test you in unimaginable ways. But remember, as Christopher Robin would say, “You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” It may be a tough week, but, as your No. 1 fan, I trust that you will represent Florida HOSA well across every spectrum. Keep on “doing the do,” and you will surely see yourself rising in the limelight in front of over 7,500 people. Nonetheless, regardless of the outcome, the State Team will surely celebrate your efforts! On a final note, do not forget to enjoy the ride. Until then, Florida HOSA!
What an experience the 2014 Florida HOSA State Leadership Conference was! The days spent at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort were definitely ones to never forget. Congratulations to you, the members, for your everlasting support and dedication to this organization, and to all of you who placed at SLC! I cannot believe that our State Conference is over, but now it is time to prep for NLC. This year’s National Leadership Conference will be held at the one and only Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in our home state of Florida! Before I begin to ramble, I would like to take the time to introduce your 2014-2015 Florida HOSA State Officer Team! These individuals made it through rigorous testing, nerve-racking interviews, and powerful speeches. With the help of the voting delegates, your new State Team was chosen: as State Parliamentarian- Michael Riley from St. Lucie West Centennial High School; as State Southern Vice-
President, Postsecondary - Clayton Sims from the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College at FAU; as State Southern Vice-President, Secondary - Julius Wade from William H. Turner Technical Arts High School; as State Northern Vice-President, Postsecondary - Travis Markham from the University of Florida; as State Northern Vice-President, Secondary - Barbara Sanchez from Deltona High School; as State President-Elect- Jaylon Tellis from West Florida High School; and as State President – myself, Stephanie Guimaraes from Cypress Bay High School. Again, congratulations to the members and advisors for their hard work this HOSA year. Through your leadership and teamwork, you have made this year unforgettable! Until next time, see you all at NLC!

If you are unable to start a chapter, you have the option to affiliate as a Member-at-Large through your Regional Advisor. Please visit the Regional Map on our website to find out your region, and then contact your Regional Advisor from our Board of Directors list to get affiliated for the year. As a Member-at-Large it will be your responsibility to keep up with the dates for the various local, regional, state, and national activities and conferences. If you have any questions about this type of membership, please contact the State Office at (386) 462-HOSA (4672). Also, don’t forget to affiliate with HOSA as an Alumni member for free. You can do this by going to www.hosa.org, hovering over the “Alumni” tab, selecting “Alumni Division”, then selecting “Free Alumni Registration.” Just fill-in the requested information and you are all set. For the “Recruitment Referral” field, please enter “Florida HOSA.” Seniors, remember that “This is not the end, it is only the beginning”, so continue your HOSA career by competing and staying involved at the postsecondary level or as alumni. What could be better than to give back to the organization which has helped you grow so much by serving as a judge or helping in other ways at the local, regional, state and national levels?
Congratulations, Florida HOSA, for putting on our largest and most exciting State Leadership Conference yet! SLC 2014 was definitely one for the books, and one to always remember. I am sure many of you are already aware of just how amazing our advisors are here at Florida HOSA. Our advisors deserve our most sincere gratitude for all the effort they poured into making sure we had yet another successful conference! So on behalf of the state staff, State Officer team, members, parents, exhibitors, and volunteers, I would like to extend an enormous thank you to all of our Chapter and Regional Advisors who served as Judges, Headquarters Staff, Lieutenants, Event Managers and Event Staff, and of course did anything and everything else that was needed to ensure our conference was a success! Florida HOSA would not be the organization that we are without all of your hard work! Also, a big congratulations to our Outstanding Advisor Award recipients. This
year, we recognized Laura Clarke from Cypress Bay High School as the Outstanding Secondary Rookie Advisor and Jim Van Allan, Keiser University-Port. St. Lucie as the Outstanding Postsecondary Rookie Advisor. A Rookie Advisor is someone who has been an advisor for 2 years or less. Lynn Strickland from Columbia High School was honored as the Outstanding Secondary Chapter Advisor. Congratulations also to Elizabeth Durkee and Leila and Todd Darress as our newest Honorary Lifetime Members! Again, thank you all for your outstanding commitment and dedication to Florida HOSA!
ATTENTION, All High School Seniors!!! As this school year comes to an end, many seniors become fearful that their HOSA journey is over. But fear not, you can continue to be a HOSA member at the postsecondary/collegiate level. There are many postsecondary chapters within our state, so you can join the chapter at your future college or university. And even though some of you may be going to an institution without an existing HOSA chapter, the great news is that you can start a HOSA chapter and continue to spread your passion about healthcare! For quick information on starting a chapter, please visit the “Starting a Chapter” page on our Florida HOSA website, www.flhosa.org. To get there go to the Home Page, hover over the “Resources/Publications” tab and select “Starting a Chapter.” In addition, for more detailed and specific information about starting a postsecondary chapter, please visit the National HOSA page at www.hosa.org and hover over “Resources”, then select “Publications” and click on “Postsecondary/Collegiate Handbook.” This handbook will guide you through the process of starting a brand new postsecondary chapter. For example, it addresses finding a faculty member to serve as an advisor, recruiting members, registering the chapter as an organization with the Student Government or Student Activities Office, and other valuable information.

Florida HOSA, I hope you all enjoyed the State Leadership Conference! It was a success thanks to all the outstanding members and advisors who attended. Again this year, we all participated in Penny Wars to raise money for the National Service Project, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Cystic Fibrosis is a chronic life threatening lung disease that affects 70,000 people worldwide. Each region competed fiercely against one another to see who could earn the most points and be crowned the Penny Wars Champion. In third place, Region 6 had $851.53. In second place, having $4,855.42 was Region 8. The region that had the most points in their jar this year was Region 9 with $4,922.42! We are excited to
announce that altogether, the members of Florida HOSA raised a total of $13,518.08! Congratulations to the top scoring regions, and a special thanks to everyone that participated in Penny Wars! Start saving your pennies now for next year’s National Service Project. The National Service Project is selected for a period of two years and this June, during the National Leadership Conference, the voting delegates will decide which organization will have this honor. I’ll see you there!!
Allina Hernandez - Southern VP, Secondary
Hello, Florida HOSA! As you all know, the National Leadership Conference is coming up very soon! This year’s NLC is being held in Lake Buena Vista, FL at the very same Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort that hosted our State Leadership Conference just a few weeks ago. Since the National Conference is being held in Florida, it’s very important that we, as members of Florida HOSA, show the rest of the country just how professional we can be by dressing to impress! The official National HOSA dress code can be found on the National HOSA website, www.hosa.org. If you hover over “Resources”, then select “Resources” and click on “PowerPoints”, you can access “Understanding the HOSA Dress Code” presentation. Men should wear a black or a navy blue suit (jacket and slacks) with a white dress shirt, closed-toe navy blue or black shoes and socks, and a maroon tie.
Women should dress much the same, wearing a navy blue or black suit with a white dress shirt or blouse, navy or black shoes. Heels and stockings are optional, as well as the maroon HOSA scarf or tie. Female members may wear either pants or a skirt with their suit, but members should be very certain that their skirts are at least knee-length. National HOSA takes its dress code very seriously, and any individuals who are not dressed in accordance with this dress code will not be allowed to walk onstage during the general sessions for recognition. Well, Florida HOSA, I hope to see you all join the State Team at this year’s National Leadership Conference right here in Florida! Make sure to end the school year with a strong finish, and be sure to prepare for the competitive events of NLC!

Another great year has gone by! Now let’s recap what we have done all year. Let’s start off by giving a big thanks to our wonderful Region 5 Officers of 2013-2014! Also, let’s not forget the Advisors who make all of this possible. So give your advisor a bug hug and thank him or her for being such an amazing person! On November 15th-17th we got to spend an exciting weekend with other members and the State Officers at the Leadership Development Conference at Lake Yale Baptist Conference Center in Leesburg. The workshops led by the State Officers helped bring to light our inner leaders. It was a weekend full of wacky activities such as the animal noise game, ooh, aah, uh, eh, and who can forget the rap battle for the Parliamentary Procedure workshop? The best part was meeting other members from different regions. Next, we all joined forces for Penny Wars to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Manatee High School had a Bowling Night and two car washes. Palmetto High School held a fundraising night at a restaurant and even made time to host blood drives. Another high school in our region had an event in which each first period class had a certain amount of time to raise as many pennies as they could. The winning class was compensated with donuts! A miniature carnival was even planned with Chapter Officers from various schools participating and having pies thrown in their faces to raise money! HOSA Orientation was a new event this year. During this orientation existing members got to know the new members. The idea was that new members would feel more welcome in the organization and not hesitate to ask for help whenever they needed it. Committees consisting of members were also formed to help spread the word about HOSA. The most enthusiastic members made posters, announcements of meetings, and even contributed to HOSA Week. Many schools were able to boost their membership and attendance at their meetings. There were even after school study sessions for those who needed help in their event or simply wanted to be in a quiet place to study. With an exceptional attendance and devoted members, we were able to prepare everyone for the State Leadership Conference. Everyone had such a marvelous time at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. Our knowledge and abilities were tested and rewarded at the same time. It was an incredible experience to meet so many people passionate for the same organization. It was even more exciting to hear how much we have grown as an organization for the past 11 years. This student-led organization is just getting started and the future looks very bright for us as professionals!

On Friday, January 31st, the 2014 Region 9 HOSA Winter Leadership Conference (WLC) was held at Keiser University in West Palm Beach for the second year in a row. Keiser is a generous business partner allowing us to use their facility for this event. Their entire staff pitched in acting as judges, proctors, event managers, and even security to help make this a safe and a special day. Keiser brought in a radio station DJ, bounce house, and a photo booth under a HUGE tent to keep competitors entertained in their down time. A special thanks is given to Kim Lea , Campus President; Kim Scott, Medical Assisting Department Chair and HOSA Advisor; and Dr. Scott Fronrath, Ed.D., Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. They worked closely for months with the Regional Executive Board of Region 9 HOSA to make WLC a tremendous success. Their generosity and courtesy is greatly appreciated! Over 940 students registered and competed at WLC, including secondary, postsecondary and middle school members. This was the first year with middle school events happening at the same time as secondary and postsecondary events. The top three finalists from each competitive event qualified to compete at our State Leadership Conference, April 3-6 at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Central Florida. The Awards Ceremony following the competitions was held at Royal Palm Beach High School. A special thanks is given to Mrs. Fabra and the Royal Palm HS staff for being generous to help with our ceremony and allow us to use their facility. Congratulations to all of our top finalists who advanced to SLC and were recognized there as state champions and winners. We are looking forward to seeing you all at the National Leadership Conference at the same resort in June! The 2014 Winter Leadership Conference was a stupendous success and it could not have been possible without our Region 9 Executive Board who worked extremely hard for countless hours to make all of this possible. Way to go, Region 9!

We are excited to announce our new partnership with CareerSafe Online. CareerSafe, Safety Education for America’s Future, offers OSHA 10-Hour safety training programs that provide students, ages 16 to 24, an opportunity to receive an OSHA industry recognized credential. CareerSafe’s safety education courses are affordable and budget conscious at just $25 per student. CareerSafe has also worked with State and Federal funding programs to ensure that every student has a chance to receive OSHA safety training.
As part of this partnership, for every OSHA 10-Hour course purchased using the HOSA referral code at checkout, CareerSafe will donate $1.00 to the National HOSA organization with $0.50 of each dollar returning to the state HOSA organization.
Through a joint effort, we hope to generate awareness that reflects both of our goals to educate and support young workers as they become more knowledgeable about their career field of interest and more employable in the job market.
CareerSafe is currently used in school districts in all 50 states with over 480,000 students enrolled in safety awareness training courses. With their unique Youth-2-Youth web based courses, students are able to work at their own pace, while the online format makes CareerSafe easy and convenient to implement in the classroom. Additional information about CareerSafe can be found on their website: www.careersafeonline.com. Don’t forget to select the HOSA referral code at checkout.

In my interview, the company asked me if I was OSHA certified. When I told them I was, they were impressed. I actually became employed because of my OSHA card.
