SPRINGFIELD SITE
NEWSYLETTER
SIMPSON were delighted to have the
opportunity to host an Open Evening
at our Springfield Chocolate Works
site on the evening of Tuesday 10
May.
Over a three hour period the site’s
open doors saw almost 500 visitors,
from local residents, members of the
public with an interest in the history
of the building, local business owners
and staff from care providers and
surgeries in the more wider
community.
Terry’s has always been a well known
landmark in the city and, as one of
York’s major employers since the
18th century, many people in the
area know someone who had worked
within these premises since the
building opened in the 1920’s.
The evening proved to be a
tremendous success; our visitors
were able to see the visuals and
plans for the building and ask the
Client team ques.ons, and the site
staff and Client heard lots of
interes.ng stories and history about
the building and people’s memories
of working there.
SIMPSON are already being asked to
host another Open Day following the
end of the project in Spring 2017 so
that local people can see the plans
come in to frui.on.
A BRIEF HISTORY...
SPRING 2016
Simpson (York) Ltd @simpsonyorkltd www.simpsonyork.co.uk
THANKS FROM THE CLIENT TEAM..
The con.nued growth of Terry’s in the early 20th century led to
the need for an extension of the exis.ng factory complex at
Clementhorpe. This was, however, prevented by the crea.on of
Rowntree’s Park in 1921. A greenfield site to the south of the
Clementhorpe premises was chosen. The designs for the
building complex were undertaken by the architects J G Davies
and L E Wade, with work commencing in 1924.
The buildings appear to have been in constructed in phases,
with the single storey building constructed first, and then the
clock and water tower, the liquor store, followed by the head
office. The factory and .me office were constructed a:erwards.
The building complex was completed by 1930.
It was also during this .me that Noel Terry began to construct
his new family home ‘Goddards’ located to the west of the new
factory complex. The building was designed in the Arts and
Cra:s architectural style and the name was taken from Noel
Terry’s middle name (Goddard). The building is s.ll extant and is
now occupied by the Na.onal Trust.

Thank you everyone for suppor.ng and helping to organise a very successful Pre-Development
Open Day at the Chocolate Works, York yesterday.
It appears we had approximately 500 people visit the building throughout the 3 hour period
which is phenomenal! Ini.al feedback is incredibly posi.ve and we have met some very
interes.ng people who have a connec.on with the building historically and also a number of
poten.al leads. Everybody was very posi.ve about our Care Village plans and how we are
planning to create a new and innova.ve care environment for older people in this iconic
building.
It bodes well for the overall success and future of the scheme. It also highlighted the successful
partnership working together with SIMPSON and our stakeholders and this fills me with a lot of
confidence that we can turn our vision into reality.
