PhotographyThere are some similarities between the two main images used on my front cover, the main two being that both are mid-shots and they are both in focus. Despite this small similarity there is a big difference: that being on my final product I have used an illustrative piece rather than photographic. I have experimented more with photo editing and manipulation as well as using different kinds of images on the contents page. Due to the fact I took a lot more photograph's, it allowed me to experiment with costume and location – some are outside, some have no visible background and some are in the photography studio. I had planned where I wanted certain shots, so I got a group shot for the contents page and a focused mid shot for the cover, the photos look more synchronised with the page after the photo manipulation and their placement. I also used different subjects in each image which gives the impression there's a lot of content, and show progression from just using the same model for both the main image and contents image in my preliminary task. Also, I feel as though I have learnt more technical skills with the camera which I have then used in my Final Product. For example, I can now manually focus the camera which allowed me to create a small depth of field, blurring the background but not the subject. similarly, I have learnt to adjust the shutter speed, allowing me to capture motion shots and become more adventurous in my photography style.

LayoutAlthough both magazine's Front Covers follow a similar layout in that they both have a banner, strapline, left-third, right-third. However, the progression from the preliminary task to my final product is quite apparent. I feel that the layout looks a lot more professional with the text not overlapping any images as much and being aligned throughout the page. My contents page looks a lot more professional and uses a lot more of the space available as well as a more appealing look to it. I also feel like the fluidity of the page is a lot better, whereas my preliminary contents page seems quite awkwardly placed and despite there only being one image, there doesn't seem to be enough content or incentive to purchase the issue. Overall, I feel the layout looks a lot more professional and reflective of the target audience which is what's needed to make my final product successful. The preliminary task looks too confined and restricted and more like it was the teachers, not the students who created it

FontsThe fonts used on my final product show a clear progression from my preliminary task. To start with I have improved the font style into a thinner and more refined type (Orator Std.) which makes the text look more professional to a magazine, rather than a Microsoft looking font which is what the preliminary task resembles. I also feel the font looks more authentic in that it's a smaller size on the contents page which is conventional to real magazines and makes the magazine feel full of content. In the preliminary task I also used a large variety of colouration on the fonts which, compared to my final product, looks slightly disorganised and chaotic therefore I think I have progressed in using more sophisticated fonts that will attract my young adult target audience.

Modes of AddressI have addressed my audience in both magazines through a direct mode of address, which is the best way to make that instant I contact and connection with the reader and the magazine. However, I feel that I have addressed my audience (underground, alternative) much more in my final product by including typical clothes and accessories worn by my target audience and by staging the photo shoot in a variety of places with ‘dirty atmosphere. I also addressed my target audience much more directly in my final product by including unique content that was useful and interesting to them, for example tour dates, album releases and discounts. Whereas in my preliminary task, I was quite vague in the content and included issues that were too general to address students preferences, for example, I included exam timetables and revision tips - which, although they are useful to students, they aren't exciting enough as main features to entice the students to purchase. I have also addressed my secondary audience of females by including a wide variety of musicians and models that the female gender will appeal and relate to. Whereas in the college magazine only a male model is shown, which may not draw certain genders eyes as well.
