Imagine you are one of these English Gentlemen...

What would you think of these Africans? Their culture?

Between the 1600s and 1900s, Europeans began to create colonies in Africa, taking an active role in their

governance.

Why did they do this?

Reason #1

The Industrial Revolution

In the 1800s Europe began to industrialize

For Industrialization to work you need...➔ A large workforce (yup)

➔ Technology (yup)

➔ Natural resources (need more)

➔ Markets to sell goods (never enough)

European Nations saw Africa as the PERFECT place to secure all the natural resources they could ever want.

● No African leaders were invited….

gain an understanding of Africa’s geography3. With your group, use the blank map provided to mark where your country

would like to take control of4. Create two rules that European colonies should follow when colonizing the land5. Create a one minute proposal which will include:

a. Why your group would like to colonize the regionb. Why the other countries should give you what you want

1. Negotiate with other countries

2. Redraw your territory on a new map

3. Prepare to present again (why do you deserve this land?!)
