A sentence is a group of words that contains a

SIMPLE SENTENCES

Simple sentences have one independent

clause.

• There is hike today at 4:00.

• Sci-fi and drama are my two favorite

kinds of movies.

• Can you study and watch TV at the

same time?

COMPOUND SENTENCES

Compound sentences have two or more

independent clauses.

There are three kinds of compound

sentences.

COMPOUND SENTENCES

compound sentence 1: with a coordinator

• She can’t come to the hike today, so we

will go for a hike on Saturday.

COMPOUND SENTENCES

compound sentence 2: with a conjunctive

adverb

• She can’t come to the hike today;

therefore, we will go for a hike on

Saturday.

COMPOUND SENTENCES

compound sentence 3: with a semicolon

• She can’t come to the hike today; we will

go for a hike on Saturday.

COMPLEX SENTENCES

Complex sentences contain one

independent clause and one (or more)

dependent clause(s).

There are three kinds of complex

sentences.

Complex sentence 1: with Adverb Clauses

• The adverb clause acts like an adverb.

• It tells where, when, why, or how.

• It begins with a subordinator such as

when, while, because, although, if, so, or

that.

could own property, they could not vote

until 1920.

• A citizen can vote in the United States

when he or she is 18 years old.

• The adjective clause acts like an

adjective.

• It describes a noun or a pronoun.

• It begins with a subordinator such as

who, which, that, whom, whose, when, or

where.

• The noun clause acts like an noun.

• It can be a subject or object.

Compound-complex sentences contain

three clauses.

They have two independent clauses and

one dependent clause.

There are several ways to make

compound-complex sentences.
