Christmas Worship and the New Year

Advent quote by George Matthew Adams “Let us remember that the Christmas heart is a giving heart, a wide open heart that thinks of others first. The birth of the baby Jesus stands as the most significant event in all history, because it has meant the pouring into a sick world of the healing medicine of love which has transformed all manner of hearts for almost two thousand years... Underneath all the wrapped gifts is this beating Christmas heart.”

In December, our worship services will highlight lessons from the main characters in the Christmas story:

December 2: Angels All Around Us December 9: Christmas Peace and Herod’s Massacre in Bethlethem December 16: Musical Presentation: “We Bring His Light to All the World” / Caroling at 5 p.m. December 23: Jesus’ Family and Our Family December 24 at 7 p.m.: Christmas Eve: The Wisdom of the Wise Men December 30: New Life for the New Year – Jonathan Delgado

Our December Christmas Projects include: -Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes… organized and completed in November - Thank you! -Colonial House Christmas Store… organized and collected in November - Thank you! -The Westbrook Clients Christmas Tree… Snowmen can be found on a Christmas tree in the narthex with the gender and the wish list of a current long term client at Westbrook Health Services. -The Gustke Shelter Christmas Party… we will buy gifts and offer a Christmas Dinner party for the current residents of the Gustke Shelter. Items needed include: small blankets and pillows, water bottles, flash lights, games, and toiletries. Thank you for your generosity!

In December, we collect our Retired Ministers and Missionary Offering (RMMO). In 1977, American Baptist Churches USA launched the Retired Ministers and Missionaries Offering (RMMO). Today, RMMO is a tangible way for the American Baptist congregations to say “Thank you for …” the commitment, service and spiritual guidance of retired ministers, missionaries and their widowed spouses.

At Emmanuel, our vision is to offer LIFE to the world. Life is found as we Love God, Include Others, find Fellowship, and encourage Everyone to use their gifts. In January, we will look at our LIFE vision from an Old Testament perspective. Here are the Sunday LIFE service themes for January: January 6: The Shema: Love the Lord with all Your Heart January 13: David Includes Mephibosheth January 20: The Fellowship of the Old Testament Feasts January 27: The Encounter Between Moses and Jethro that Got Everyone Involved On Saturday, January 12 at 10:00 a.m., we will have a Vision Workshop to plan for the year 2019.

New Life Counseling Center Happy New Year!! On January 9, 2019 New Life Counseling Center will be accepting new clients. God has opened the doors for Mental Health Counseling to be available to church members and to the community for a reasonable fee.

I am Gail Samolitis and I am, and have been, a Licensed Professional Counselor in WV for 30 years. I am a Christian Counselor and believe God has always meant for me to be a therapist. I enjoy serving God by helping others find answers to the questions in their lives. I am accepting clients with various issues such as grief, stress, depression, anxiety, PTSD and others. Survivors of suicide and Veterans are two populations that are stigmatized but definitely welcome at New Life Counseling. We also hope to conduct seminars or workshops on risks for suicide, assessing at-risk adolescents/young adults for suicide and cyber bullying. If you have a topic you would like to know more about, please come see me so we can talk and plan an information seminar or workshop.

New Life Counseling Center is located on the 2nd floor of Emmanuel Baptist Church just above the Fellowship Hall. Please stop by anytime. Our hours currently will be on Wednesdays from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Additional hours will be added on Tuesdays and Thursdays as needed. You can make an appointment by calling 304-485-5171 or 304-588-7632.

Music News from Pam McClain

“We Bring His Light To All The World”

The EBC Music Department is currently rehearsing for its Christmas Presentation entitled, “We Bring His Light To All The World”. The music offering will be presented on Sunday, December 16, 2018 in the 10:45 a.m. worship.

Many people see the world in which they live as cold and dark with no purpose. But, as Matthew 4:16 says, “the people walking in darkness have seen a great light.” When Jesus spoke in John 8:12 He said, “I am the light of the world, whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Make plans to attend our Christmas presentation. Bring a guest. Experience the One who brings light and IS light. Our service of music will feature the Celebration Ringers, the EBC Chancel Choir, the EBC Children’s Choir, accompanist, Jane Irvine, the Puls Family strings trio and narrators, Pastors Jonathan Delgado and Kurt Busiek.

Many thanks to Karen Cox, David Enoch, Mary Nuzum, and Merewyn Weinkauf who agreed to play as our substitute accompanists through December of 2018. Your willingness to play after the departure of Chris Redmond has been a blessing. You are appreciated!

And now… It is with great excitement that the EBC Music Department welcomes MRS. JANE IRVINE as our full-time organist/pianist beginning January 2019. She is a marvelous, Christian woman with extraordinary music gifts and graces. She will be an amazing addition to our music program. We thank her for saying yes to the call to be a servant for our Lord through music.

The choir will resume a regular rehearsal schedule beginning Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in the choir room. Speaking of room…we always have room for one more singer. It’s been wonderful having new members Karen VanOster and Bob Winkler join us. If you would like to give choir a try…we’ll bring in an extra chair for you as well. “The Marriage Course”

February will be soon be here and it will be time again for The Marriage Course! This year, the course will run for seven consecutive Friday evenings starting on February 1, 2019. The course went very well last year and blessed many couples. We believe that a strong marriage blesses not only the couple, but also children, grandchildren, etc. We want the Course to be just as great this year, but we cannot do this without you. Would you please start praying and considering how you can help? We will need assistance with childcare, meal preparation and delivery, hosts and servers, help setting up

“Chez Emmanuel”, referrals for couples to take the course, funding for scholarships for a financially-constrained couple, committed Prayer Warriors, and persons to refer other pastors to attend once (as a guest) in hopes they will adopt the course at their church. We will send out a Volunteer Sign-Up Sheet and Couple’s Reservation Sheet soon. In the meantime, we are thankful for your prayers. Sincerely, Keith and Eileen Mayer, Jonathan Delgado Peter Ianniciello and Susan Stout

Healthy Bodies/Helathy Spirits

On November 2, Emmanuel hosted the 4th Annual Healthy Bodies/Healthy Spirits (HBHS) Conference. It was a great success! HBHS is a statewide effort to equip churches for health ministry. This year, the Conference occurred simultaneously in four sites throughout our state. During a part of the day, we all connected via live broad stream. The presenters covered topics on a variety of health topics from drug addiction, plant-based lifestyles, preventing cognitive decline, benefits of exercise to gardening. Our presenters included national Netflix Heroin(e) documentary star Necia Freeman, state reknown physicians Jim Levos and Art Calhoun, The Rock’s Pastor Dave Chisolm and Health Coach Linda McClead. We had a fabulous vegetarian lunch by Executive Chef George Diaz from Camden Clark Medical Center! About 50 people attended and they all left wiser, with new friends and colleagues and inspiration! This Conference was a large endeavor: one made in partnership with North Parkersburg Baptist Church and The Rock. My particular thanks to the Adult & Health Ministry Team, particularly Judy Prater, Jo Ann Boggs, Steve & Laraine Metheny, Jewel Lusk, Terri Fielder, Maria Keen, Sherry Smith, Betsy Jefferson, Lyndall and Judy Jones, Jerry and JoAnn Backus and Francine Bauer.

Mission & Ministry News

from Margaret Frees

Operation Christmas Child – Participants at Emmanuel packed over 187 shoeboxes this year. That’s more than last year! Thank you to Dee Lallemont for being our new church coordinator, and to Sarah and Joe Stephens for taking on the job of Drop-off Location Coordinator. Thank you, too, to Brian Brown for coordinating the trip to Charlotte to process the boxes.

Outreach Projects for Christmas – Again this year, we will be assisting Weirton Christian Center with their celebration by collecting small gifts suitable for kids to buy for their parents, wrapping paper, bows and gift tags. Please bring in your items before Dec. 6.

RMMO Offering - December is when we acknowledge with gratitude retired ministers, missionaries, their widowed spouses and elderly clergy within our churches. Please continue to show your appreciation for their service to God by participating in this special offering.

Missionary Update - Brent and Destiny Duncan will be joining our family of supported missionaries in 2019. They currently live in Vienna but will be leaving for Kenya, Africa in July where they will be working with Africa Inland Missions at the Rift Valley Academy. They will be working as dorm parents in this boarding school for the children of

missionaries. We will be hosting a mission luncheon for them in January where you can hear more about their ministry and get to know them better.

Lauren Modesitt will be going on a medical mission trip to Fort Liberte, Haiti, in February with a group associated with Friends of Fort Liberte. She will be traveling with her aunt, a nurse practitioner, and assisting with the daily activities of the medical clinic there. We will be having a luncheon to assist her with the trip expenses on Dec. 9.

Looking ahead – Are you interested in ministry outreach programs or mission related projects? Or are you blessed with secretarial skills you would like to put to good use? We welcome new members to this team and look forward to new energies and ideas. P.S. – You DO NOT have to be willing to travel in order to serve. We will have a team meeting the first week in December to start thinking about projects for 2019. Watch for the announcement in the bulletin for the date and time.

Senior Adult Ministry News from Judy Prater Adult ministry is ongoing during the winter months, with Sunday School Classes, Life Groups, Men’s Groups and Women’s Circles, and Bible Studies. Senior-cize Chair Exercises continue on Fridays in the parlor, with bag lunch following in the conference room. If there are at least four people, they will meet. Call or text Judy @ 304.615.7036 to confirm.

Divorce Care will end their cur rent session on December 18 and then resume on Tuesday, January 15. Melanie Whited is the facilitator. Contact the Church Office if you need more information.

Grief Share will begin a new cycle on Wednesday March 6, 2019 at 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. For more information please call 304-588-7632 or check online at www.griefshare.org.

May we each know the blessings of our Lord as we enter the season of Thanksgiving and the celebration of our Savior’s birth. In the midst of pain, loss, and conflict, our God is always present if we but seek Him.
