1935-1974: 1 to 49 acre farms declined from 2.7 million to half

million

After 1974: 1 to 49 acre farms were over 540,000.

1935-1997: 50 to 499 acres farms declined from 3.9 million to million.

Result since 1974: farms with fewer than 50 acres and farms with more than 500 acres have both increased

their share of total farms, but midsize farms’ share has declined.
