Participation of 16-17s in 2013

3

Ealing Participation HighBUT• Follows London pattern of 17+ drop-out and

transition - switchers• Really low take-up of apprenticeships (about 90

in approx year group of 2800) across age 16-19• Hard-to shift NEET group of around 80-100

young people per year – key disadvantaged groups of young people continue to fail to participate and achieve – RONI system

4

Focus on 17+ Participation

IoE report on 17+ in London - workshop

• The new transition point for post-16 – about 50% will be ‘switchers’ at this stage

• More CEIAG in post-16 needed• More T&L support for L2 – L3 ‘cliff face’• 3 years required for many students to reach L3• More Mixed Pathways to L3• English and maths at L2 crucial for L3 attainment and entry to

London labour market

Key 14-19 issues for Ealing

Knowledge of alternative routes• Apprenticeships for all abilities; how can we improve take-up• More awareness of part-time HE options and routes; avoid

loans and impact on London income Vulnerable learners • Systems to support vulnerable learners – Risk of NEET

indicators – how to improve?• What post-16 pathways are there for learners at level 1 and

working towards?

15

WorkshopsHow do we tackle these issues as partners and develop shared solutions?

Which current groups can ‘own’ and help to tackle these issues?

What are your first thoughts/ideas in response to these challenges?
