The GVR AmigOs Men’s Club is proud to announce the start of our “Season of
Giving” campaign. In support of those in need and less fortunate in our neigh-
boring communities, we are launching a Food Drive for October and November
and a children’s toy drive in December. It is our hope and goal that every single
member of our club will be a part of this campaign.
At our October and November Meet and Greets we will
be collecting non-
perishable food items
and/or monetary
donations on behalf
of the Community
Food Bank of
Southern Arizona. The items most in need
are: canned meats, vegetables, and fruit,
peanut butter, dried/canned beans, cereal,
rice, and pasta. On behalf of the many Arizona residents, especially children and
seniors, your help is needed and much appreciated.
At our December Meet and Greet we
will be having a holiday party and are
asking members to bring down a toy or
other gift. We will then distribute them
to needy children to help spread a little
bit of holiday cheer.
AmigOs’ Season of Giving
October Meet and Greet
Saturday, October 20th, 9am
Santa Rita Springs GVR Center - Fiesta Room
After our monthly business meeting, Sylvia Bencomo with the
Green Valley Sheriff ’s Auxiliary Volunteers Scam Squad, along
with our very own Ira Cochran, will be doing a short presentation
on the current scams happening in our community. Coffee and
donuts will be served. Please bring down some canned goods
for our food drive campaign.
President’s MessagePresident’s Message
Dear Friends,
“For he who serves his fellows
is, of all his fellows, greatest.”
This quote was said by Dr. E. Urner
Goodman (May 15, 1891 - March
13, 1980). Goodman, an influential
leader in the Boy Scouts of America
movement, truly believed in pro-
moting service to others. As AmigOs, I would like to see
us follow in that tradition. As you read on the front cover,
we are having a “Season of Giving” this fall. We are all
very fortunate in many ways. However, there are those
who are not. With that in mind I really hope that ALL of
us are willing to participate in our October/November
Food Drive and the December Toy Drive to benefit those
in need in our extended community. Let us be an example
to all the other GVR clubs with our service to others.
I would like to welcome back our “snowbird” members
who are beginning to fly (or drive) south and return for
the warm and sunny Arizona winter. Together, let us
make this club something special for all as we continue to
grow in numbers and in friendship.
As always, if you have any questions, club suggestions, or
just want to make a comment, please email me at:
[email protected] or speak to me in person at
any meeting.
Yours in Service and Dedication,
ROB PETRILLO

The AmigOs September
“Out and About” Trip
On Monday, September 24th, the AmigOs Out and
About group spent the day at the Pima Air and Space
Museum and the “Boneyard”.
The Pima Air & Space Museum is one of the largest non-
government funded aviation and space museums in the
world! Featuring over 300 historical aircrafts, from a
Wright Flyer to a new 787 Dreamliner as well as presi-
dent’s Kennedy and Johnson’s Air Force One plane. The
docents, most of whom are former military pilots, were
very knowledgeable and very eager to explain anything
and everything in this 80+ acre indoor and outdoor mu-
seum.
After a self tour of the numerous hangars and a guided
tram tour, we then boarded a motorcoach to take us to
the nearby 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regenera-
tion Group (AMARG) facility on the Davis-Monthan Air
Force Base. Informally known as the “Boneyard”, a
friendly docent on board narrated the tour of the 4,000+
aircraft from the U.S. Air Force, Navy-Marine Corps,
Army, Coast Guard, and several federal agencies including
NASA in varying degrees of storage, being regenerated
or recycled.
A special thank you goes out to AmigOs member Bob
Delelio for organizing and leading this wonderful trip!
Couple’s GroupWe have 20 people signed up for
the October 20th Oktoberfest.
We do have room for two more
couples to join us. Celebrate Ok-
toberfest in a perfect outdoor
setting with the Bavarian Brass Band and their energetic
polkas, marches, folksongs, and waltzes. Ticket price is
$24 per person and includes a full German themed meal
and 2 drinks of authentic German beer, wine, or soft drinks.

Book Club GroupThe GVR AmigOs
Book Club will be start-
ing up again on Friday,
November 2 at 10am
at the home of Mike
McGinely. We will be
discussing The Tenth Justice by Brad Meltzer. If you
would like to join the group please contact group leader:

Ben Addison, a new Supreme
Court clerk, accidentally reveals
an upcoming decision to another
lawyer. That lawyer is a fraud
though and he makes millions
off the announcement. The
lawyer also blackmails Ben.
To save himself, Ben shares his
secret with Lisa, a fellow clerk,
and his three roommates: a
State Department worker; a
Washington Daily reporter; and
an Senator's assistant. The team uses their resources to
uncover the blackmailer and save their friend, but their
abuse of power comes at a cost. Someone within their
circle is leaking information, so they must battle internal
and external forces to secure their once bright futures.
Special Interest GroupsSpecial Interest GroupsOne of the best things about the AmigOs Men’s Club are the unlimited number of special interest groups that we can have.
If you have a hobby, interest, or skill that at least one other member shares with you then you can start a group. Each group
can decide when to meet, how often to meet, and what to do within the group. One person is chosen as the chair and to-
gether, hopefully will expand the size of the group. Mike Malenfant has compiled the interests of our current members into
a spreadsheet. If you wish to start a group with others who share a similar interest, feel free to call or e-mail each other and
get something started. Once you have your group, contact the club’s Special Interest Committee Chair at
[email protected] to make it official.
Breakfast GroupThe AmigOs’ monthly
breakfast group meets at
9am on the first Saturday
of every month at the
Grill on the Green. Join a
large and friendly bunch of guys for good food and good
conversation. A great opportunity to meet and get to know
other members in a relaxing atmosphere. For more infor-
mation contact Manny Rivers at [email protected]

Texas Hold’em PokerTexas Hold‘em is rapidly growing in
popularity worldwide and with good
reason. It’s a very exciting game with
many variables and is relatively easy
to learn and master. Most poker players around the world
agree that Texas Hold’em is easily one of the most strate-
gic of all poker game variations. Whether you have played
before or don’t even know how, come join this group and
let’s have some fun playing cards. For more info, contact:

Part Four: The GymYour first time at a gym can be a scary experience. Especially
if you have never set foot in one before. Just remember that
it’s going to be filled with other people just like you, other
first-time gym goers; and, keep in mind, most people at the
gym are so concerned with themselves, they are not the
least bit concerned with what you’re doing! Here are some
tips to make your first gym experience a good one:
(always check with your doctor before starting any new
exercise program)
Tip #1: What to bring
Everybody’s different, but the following items are ideal:
Towel -No one wants to sit in your sweat and I’m sure you
don’t want to sit in someone else’s sweat so bring a towel
with you to dab your forehead or lay down on any machines
you may use.
Water Bottle - An essential item for any physical activity.
ipod- Many people like listening to their own music during
a workout. Make sure your music listening device is one
that doesn’t hinder your workout. Some people use arm
bands or waist bands to put their devices in.
Tip #2: What to do upon your arrival
First timer recommendation is to head for the cardio ma-
chines (i.e. elliptical, treadmill, bikes, stepmill, etc). This way
you can warmup and do a more complete scan of the gym.
Spend as much time as you need to on the cardio machines.
This may be as far as you get on your first trip, but at least
you’ve done something and gotten a little more comfortable
with the gym environment.
If you are familiar with other gym equipment, you can reac-
quaint yourself with the nautilus machines or free weights
at this time. If you have never used any type of fitness
equipment before, I highly, strongly, and vehemently rec-
ommend scheduling a session with a personal trainer. It is
very easy to hurt yourself on gym equipment if you are not
familiar with how to use it. GVR offers free intro sessions
to teach you about and how to use each machine.
Tip #3: Be familiar with gym etiquette
These are some basic gym etiquette rules that can keep you
from looking and feeling like a jerk on your first trip to the gym.
If you don’t know how to do something, ask! The GVR
gyms have volunteers to show you how to use a particular
piece of equipment that you are not familiar with. If you
want a more extensive tutorial on machines, or on working
out in general, you can schedule a session with a personal
trainer. GVR offers personal training sessions and even
free first time sessions with certified trainers.
Use a towel! Be sure to wipe off any equipment that you
sweat on. The GVR gyms have sanitation stations to wipe
off machines when you are done. Wear proper attire. Of
course, you want to wear comfortable clothing that you can
easily move in. Some prefer shorts while others like sweat-
pants. Make sure you wear sneakers with good grips. Re-
rack your weights. Remember how your parents used to
tell you to put your toys away when you were done playing
with them? They were preparing you for the gym! If the
weights are too heavy for you to put back, ask for help or
use a lighter weight the next time you work out.
Tip #4 Go with a friend
What better way to tackle the unknown than with a friend!
This way you’ll have someone to try new things with. You
can take a class, or schedule a personal training session to-
gether, and, if you go regularly then you can hold each
other accountable.
Tip #5 How hard should I exercise?
If you are only using weights for a strengthening workout,
start with 3 to 5 pound weights (for men). Perform 8 to 12
repetitions (Reps). Rest 1 minute and perform another (set)
of these exercises. You should not have any pain with exer-
cising. When you can comfortably perform more than 15 to
20 repetitions, you should consider increasing your weight
by a pound or two. 3 to 5 times per week of strength exercises
is optimal to maintain a strong body that withstands the rigors
of daily life as we grow older. Alternating with or adding
cardio exercising as well is even more ideal.

Getting started safely
Getting active is one of the healthiest decisions you can
make as you age, but it’s important to do it safely.
Get medical clearance from your doctor before starting an
exercise program, especially if you have a preexisting condition.
Ask if there are any activities you should avoid. Consider
health concerns. Keep in mind how your ongoing health
problems affect your workouts. For example, diabetics may
need to adjust the timing of medication and meal plans
when setting an exercise schedule.
Listen to your body. Exercise should never hurt or make
you feel lousy. Stop exercising immediately and call your
doctor if you feel dizzy or short of breath, develop chest
pain or pressure, break out in a cold sweat, or experience
pain. And put your routine on hold if a joint is red, swollen,
or tender to the touch—the best way to cope with injuries is
to avoid them in the first place. If you regularly experience
pain or discomfort after exercising, try exercising for less
time but more frequently throughout the day.
Start slow and build up steadily. If you haven’t been active
in a while, build up your exercise program little by little. Try
spacing workouts in ten-minute increments twice a day.
Prevent injury and discomfort by warming up, cooling
down, and keeping water handy.
Commit to an exercise schedule for at least 3 or 4 weeks so
that it becomes habit, and force yourself to stick with it.
This is much easier if you find activities you enjoy.
CARDIO EQUIPMENT
Treadmills are probably the most widely known sort of gym
equipment. They’re essentially running machines, allowing you
to go jogging indoors instead of bracing the hills and hot sun of
the great outdoors. The speed can be altered accordingly, right
down to a slow walking pace. The incline can also usually be ad-
justed, creating a harder workout with a steeper incline, and an
easier workout with a decline. Altering the incline means differ-
ent legs muscles will be worked during your run or walk.
Elliptical trainers are another great means of cardiovascular
exercise, but are much lower impact than running on a tread-
mill, which is great if you’re just starting out or have problems
with any of your joints – particularly your knees. They’re akin
to going skiing, and are self-propelled using the motion of the
human body to keep them going.
Exercise Bikes: It’s probably pretty obvious that an exercise
bike is actually quite similar to regular bike – just without all
the wheels! Again, exercise bikes provide a low-impact cardio-
vascular workout, and the resistance can be altered according
to your needs, leading to a tougher workout or an easier one.
Rowing Machines: Yet again, the rowing machine is a car-
diovascular exercise machine that mimics the motions of an
outdoor sport – in this case, rowing. These offer your upper
body just as good a workout as your lower body – possibly
even more so – and so they differ to most other cardiovascu-
lar exercise machines which focus mostly on the legs.
Weight Machines
Moving away from cardiovascular workout equipment,
weights machines instead focus on strength and muscle defi-
nition. There are many different types of weights machines,
all focusing on different muscles and muscle groups. There
are machines to increase the strength of your arms, your
upper and lower legs, your back, your chest and your abs.
Whichever area you want to get more toned and defined in,
there’s sure to be a machine to help you get there!
Free Weights
Free weights are weights separate from any machinery, which
require learning specific techniques in order to improve mus-
cle strength and definition. They’re most commonly used for
arms and back workouts.
Enjoy Yourself
Regular physical activity can improve your quality of life in so
many ways. Doing something you love to do is a great way to
stay motivated. However, overexerting yourself or participating
in an exercise program you don’t really like will make you ex-
hausted and very likely cause you to discontinue activity. In
order to gain the many benefits of regular exercise, including
increased energy, weight loss, improved heart health and
strong bones, you must like what you are doing. If swimming
feels great, dancing gets your excitement up, or bicycling is
refreshing, then by all means do what your enjoy!
