AGENCY SPOTLIGHT (Continued)and, trained over 35,100 people in First Aid, CPR and Aquatics Safety.

In September, the American Red Cross celebrates National Preparedness Month which challenges everyone to be Red Cross Ready. It’s important to prepare for possible disasters and other emergencies. There are three actions everyone can take that can help make a difference: Get a Kit, Make a Plan, Be Informed.

The Red Cross can help you create your emergency preparedness kit by determining what emergencies or disasters are most likely to occur in your community and the items that will be needed. Every emergency kit should contain at least a 3-day supply of food and water, any medications that you may need, and a first aid kit. Always be sure to include copies of personal documents such as driver’s licenses, birth certificates and banking information in an easy-to-carry case.

Creating a plan requires that you and your family meet to discuss what to do in the event of an emergency or an evacuation. Discuss how to prepare and respond to emergencies including how to turn off utilities like natural gas, water and electricity. Identify roles and responsibilities for each family member and practice these plans to ensure that everyone is prepared.

The Red Cross can help you be informed by offering an array of classes from Disaster Preparedness to CPR Training. The local Red Cross offers over twenty different classes, including Adult, Child, and Infant CPR/AED training; Aquatics Safety & Rescue; Babysitting Training; and, our newest addition, Wilderness and Remote First Aid Training. The Red Cross also offers CPR for the Professional Rescuer which is approved by the Emergency Cardiovascular Care for all healthcare providers. In addition to all of our chapter classes the local Red Cross offers online training, which allows you to complete the course on your own time from the comfort of your home.

The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time and money to do its work and to continue to provide disaster relief. We do appreciate your donations to the Red Cross because an average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. For more information on the services offered from the American Red Cross Central Valley or to become a volunteer please contact us at 455-1000, visit our office at 2002 N. Fine Avenue, Fresno, or you can become a fan on Facebook.
