Wow! it's February already. It
seems like yesterday we were
enjoying the Annual New
Years Day ride, what a great
ride. There were over 200 members who came out to
enjoy cold but sunny weather.
Once again Diana and Kendra
Herrington put on a great rest
stop for us. So, the first month of the New Year is history. Have you
been riding much in this cold
weather? If you have, you
have most likely utilized the

Greetings Fellow Cy-
clists,
2013 NEW YEARS DAY RIDE
The cold weather didn’t hinder nearly 200 cyclists from participating in the annual New Years Day Ride. The ride began at Willow and Nees and made its way out to Friant Cove where members were treated to an array of baked goodies, coffee, and hot cocoa. Temperatures were in the high 30’s to low 40’s for most of the ride. Some rode out to Fri-ant, loaded up on snacks and headed straight back. Others made the trek on around the back side of Millerton Lake to add a few extra miles and a tad more climbing. The event was a great way to kick off the 2013 riding season. We hope to see all of you at the many events sponsored by your Fresno Cycling Club this year! Check out the photos on page 2 and 3.

lots of rides on the calendar.
We know you like variety
and we know many of you
have your favorite riding buddies. In an effort to help
you plan your rides, we will
be listing up to two months of
rides on the calendar. Also
you will notice in the coming
months that we will be part-
nering with other groups who
host rides such as the local
bike shops in an effort to
make more rides available to
our members. One such popular ride, the monthly
Sunnyside Bicycles Waffle
ride, will be included on the
Club calendar as well as the
Dirt Friday Mountain Bike
rides and Sunday rides hosted
by Steven's Bike Shops. An-
other fun event that is gaining
popularity is the monthly
Fresno Bike Party held the
third Friday of every month.
These rides will be in addi-tion to all the great rides that
are hosted by our own ride
leaders. To serve the hun-
dreds of Club members, it is
important to provide rides for
all levels. We're always in
need of new Ride Leaders to
help lead the many club rides.
Contact Doug to schedule
your ride. Mark your calendars and
register to ride the upcom-
ing FCC BIG HAT Cen-
tury ride April 6th,
www.bighatcentury.com.
Last year the Club put on the Clovis Centennial Cen-
tury which was a well at-
tended. Clovis city leaders
were so pleased with the
success of the ride that they
invited us back to put on
another Century ride. This
years ride will be in con-
junction with Clovis Big
Hat Days. It is shaping up
to be an exciting event.
Also plan to attend the Club members only Kirch
Flat Century on May 4th,
both rides will also have
shorter rides available. Are you considering the Climb to Kaiser Challenge
this year? If so you will
want to attend the next
Club Meeting on Wednes-
day Feb 13. Our guest
speaker local racer Mark
Sasser will be talking to us
about how to train for the
Climb to Kaiser. Mark is
one of our local racers who
has not only done the C2K
numerous times but fin-ished first several times
over the years. In an effort to create a safer
environment for bicyclists
and pedestrians, the local office of The California
Highway Patrol has been
awarded a grant for tar-
geted enforcement and
educational efforts. They
have partnered with local
law enforcement agencies
to form an enforcement/
education task force. For
the next 8 months (through
September) they will be
targeting identified viola-
tions that result in vehicle
versus bicycle and pedes-
trian accidents. A word to
the wise, bicyclists that are
violating the laws will be cited. Common violations
are rolling stop signs, run-
ning red lights and riding
on the wrong side of the
roadway. Bicyclists that
violate the laws are as
much of the problem as
motorists that do. As part
of the Task force educa-
tion, a CHP officer will be
speaking at the March Club
meeting on March 13, 2013. That's all I have for

The Ranchos/Hills Seniors would like to an-nounce the date for their fifth annual "Cycle For The Seniors" Benefit ride that will be on April 20th 2013. The location is just off of Ave 12, five miles west of highway 41 in the Ranchos. Upcoming details and registration will be avail-able on our web page at www.rhseniors.org probably by February 1st. Past events have started and ended at the center with at least four routes to choose from, and well stocked rest stations and Sag support. An after-ride meal will be included with a door prize for each participant. Also this year, we are toying with having an addi-tional poker prize pool for those who feel lucky. Door prizes are donated by various central valley sponsors and bike shops. Please make sure you visit their locations to thank them for supporting our great hobby. It is only with their support that we can put on an event such as this. Hope all of you had a healthy and wonderful holiday season. I look for-ward to seeing you all out there on the road.

PAGE 4 VOLUME XLIII , ISSUE 2
In those 4 issues of The Grapevine, our club’s newsletter during the 60's, there was much, much more informa-tion than we’ve been able to include in our 1-page format. There was one other article about a bike rally, which was apparently similar to the sports car rally’s that have been held all over the world for many decades, but that article ended mid-stream with the words “continued on last page,” only the last page wasn’t there (Lost sometime during the past 49-yrs.). But at least you’ve had the opportunity to read about the main activities which were reported in those 4 newsletters. And until last Summer we didn’t even have that much information regarding our great club’s beginnings. Now that we’ve covered most of the important info. in those 4 issues, we come to a point in time where we actually have no information about the club’s activities until it’s revival in the very early 70's. I’m quite sure that the club con-tinues for several more years during the 60's, but I have no proof of how long, and no information about what they did, or who the officers were, so we have to move on now to the club’s revival in the 70's.
From what I’ve been told by the few persons whom I’ve been in contact with, the Fresno Cycling Club had died off sometime during the 60's, but we have no idea exactly when that happened, or why. Just that it was during, or after 1964, and that several of the active members had graduated from High School and moved on to various Colleges or Universities. What we have learned is that it was primarily John Fulton, with the help of Barton McMurray, and Marvin Hopson, and perhaps others whom I have yet to learn about, who in the very early 70's, most likely ‘71, saw a growing need for a cycling club in the Fresno area once again. So apparently they put out the word, presumably with the aid, once again, of Richard “Buddy” Avakian at Broadway Cyclery, and probably other bicycle shops at the time, and revived the Fresno Cycling Club. Personally, I have spoken with both John Fulton and Marv Hopson on this sub-ject, but their memories have produced limited information. I believe that Barton McMurray was working at Broad-way Cyclery at that time (since he was working there when I bought my Raleigh “Grand Sports” there in ‘72), which ties him in to the revival of the club. Buddy has passed away, but I don’t know about Barton McMurray, and would still like to contact him in hopes of learning more about the club’s activities during the early 70's. So once again, if any-one knows anything about Barton McMurray’s current whereabouts, please help me get in touch with him. The last I heard was that he lived on his family’s farm somewhere near Sanger, and I have an old P. O. Box address, which I’m embarrassed to say that I have not tried yet, but no home address. I believe I might have an old phone number, but if I tried it (and I believe that I did) I probably left a message and didn’t get an answer. So if anyone can volunteer to try to find Barton, maybe he will remember what actually happened in the early-70's, and we can put more of the pieces back into the puzzle.
So here’s what I do know. According to very recent e-mail correspondences with Dave Mitchell, the club put on what I believe was a non-sanctioned road race in Woodward Park. In Dave’s own words: “I was 15 when I won the Non ABL race at Woodward Park (my first race).” In an e-mail dated Nov. 22, 2011 he states: “I think my first Wood-ward Park race was in 1971. The race was 1 lap. I raced the 1972 edition as an ABL [A.B.L. of A.] Junior. It was one of my first sanctioned races. I went on an Earth Day ride in 1971. John Fulton and Barton McMurray were at Court House Park where they had a Fresno Cycling Club booth. John announced that they were planning an overnighter to Grant Grove. That really caught my imagination. They held training rides for people to get ready for Grant Grove. I remember going up to the town of Tollhouse on one of the rides. Steve [Dave’s brother] and I both went on the rides. The people were great and I was hooked on cycling after that.” In his next e-mail (11/24/11), he says: “The other memorable ride the club put on was an overnighter to Kirch Flat. I think it was in the fall. We did a midnight ride with a full moon from the campground to the turn off to Black Rock Reservoir. There were at least a dozen people there. Someone’s family drove and took our gear to the campground so we didn’t have to carry anything. I think that was ‘72, but not sure.” This correspondence just sort of came out of the blue one day after I had written to Dave in re-sponse to an interview of Eddy Merckx that he had sent me, that interview triggered some of my own memories, and my comments seemed to trigger some of Dave’s memories so I asked him to keep sending me stuff like that, and in a short time we included John Fulton in our e-mail exchanges. I learned quite a bit from those e-mail correspondences.
FRESNO CYCLING CLUB - THE REVIVAL - PART 7
On Nov. 26, 2011, Dave sent me another e-mail with more early 70's memories: “Some of my first training rides with the club started at Manchester. We did fast pace-line work going out Shields, Motel Drive, Golden State, Herndon, Forkner, and back to Ashlan. I remember regulars being John Fulton, Barton [McMurray], Hank King, Dave [I think Lewis - MAP] ... and a few others. They started at 5:00 PM. I remember it being over 100 degrees when we would start. That was great training to learn how to ride in a group. Some time early on we would go on night time rides down Belmont with all the kids dragging the main in their cars. We just had leg lights. One of the riders was Val Valentino. He would draft Barton so close that their tires would rub and they never crashed that I remember. There were also time trials at Fort Washington. I think it was a four mile loop. There was no housing out there then, so you could see the riders going around the whole route. A little later I was doing a lot of riding with Blayne Devine and Ron Lipton who were both in high school. Ron and I did 700 miles in a week during spring break. Steve men-tioned that he met John Fulton at Broadway when his Schwinn Continental was stolen and he bought an Italvega Gran Tursimo [Tourisimo?] from Broadway. I think that was before the Earth Day ride.”
Since that e-mail, John Fulton has told me a more clear story about how and why the club was revived. John told me that he had become interested in bicycle racing, but he found out very quickly that racing as an “unattached” rider (a racer with no club affiliation), cost more for entry fees. So he began asking around Fresno, and eventually asked Richard “Buddy” Avakian at Broadway Cyclery, about cycling clubs in the area. Of course Rich-ard had been a part of the Fresno Cycling Club from even before the club was chartered in ‘63, and was able to help John contact the right people. And with that information, and the help of the people mentioned above, the club was revived. I believe that was sometime in 1971.
I, Mark Perkins, got into the club in a similar way, but in ‘72. My first 10-speed had been stolen, and I was shopping around for a new, and better bike. I met Marv Hopson at Big Wheel Bike Shop, and Marv invited me to go on a ride from Manchester Center out to the McKinley & DeWolf 10-mi. time trials. Dave Lewis has told me that he remembers that ride too. It was my first ride with other cyclists, my very first time trial, and my first ride further out into the foothills of Fresno County. However, I do remember that I had ridden over 100 miles before I moved to Fresno, when I still lived in Visalia. And I’m pretty sure that I didn’t join the Fresno Cycling Club until 1973. More next month.

SIGHTS FROM
THE SADDLE
Last month's Sights from the Saddle is a landmark that should be familiar to every cyclist. For lack of a better name, I refer to it as the "Home Stretch Wind Indicator Dude". The "Home Stretch" comes from the Strava seg-ment in which it is located and "Wind Indicator" refers to the flags it holds to gauge wind direction and speed. This guy is located on the west side of Auberry Road about 0.2 miles north of Copper Ave. Over the course of 2012, this sight has worn various costumes as appropriate for the season. I have recorded eight different incar-nations and have scrambled them in random order.
The correct order of each picture is as follows:
1. F (January 2012) 2. E (March 2012) 3. H (May 2012) 4. A (July 2012)
5. G (September 2012) 6. C (October 2012) 7. D (November 2012) 8. B (December 2012)
Unfortunately I did not have any responses to January's contest so I will be discontinuing the feature. Hope-fully this column inspired many of you to look around when you are riding, as you never know what interesting sights you might see.
Thank you to all the club members who participated in these contests, it was my pleasure to sponsor the fea-ture.

The purpose of this committee is to publicize the Fresno Cycling Club by becoming involved in similar activities. The involvement will be composed of two parts: create a brochure highlighting the riding and non-riding involvement of the Fresno Cycling Club; create group of members to man a booth at all of the pay to ride events or other cycling events to publicize the Fresno Cycling Club.
Sound like something that you would be interested in? Drop me an e-mail at [email protected]. Depending on the response, I will be in touch with all who respond by the 15th of February. We will meet and go from there. Thanks so much for taking the time to be involved. K. Herrington

THE LANTERNE ROUGE
In 2012 we took a closer look at some of the popular climbs in our area. We learned some new names or recalled some old favorites for these hills. This year, I thought we would take this space to describe a number of popular riding routes that many of us regularly enjoy but others may not be as familiar with. Some of these routes will be very well known and traveled, others perhaps not so much. Over the course of the year, I hope to present three routes for each of our four categories: A, B, C, and D. Each edition will include a route description, a cue sheet, a map and some statistics about the type of terrain .
This month we have a B level ride. The ride
begins at the parking lot at Willow & Nees
(Stevens Bicycles). This is an out and back ride
that is mostly flat and features a bike lane for
the entire ride.
This route is just over 20 miles. Most cyclists
who make their way out to Friant enjoy a drink
and a brief rest at the Shell station in Friant.
There are two possible hills for you to tackle if
you so choose. There is “The Dam Hill” or
“Broken Bridge”, either one will add a bit of
challenge if you find the flats out to Friant were
just too easy for you.
After your break, you return the same way you
came out along Friant Rd. Be careful as you
make the turn up “Willow Hill” as you’ll have
to cross oncoming traffic on Friant.

The Fresno cycling Club is a group of 500 plus cyclist who enjoy bicycling as a recreation and sport. As a club, we seek to o ffer cycling events and activities that span a spectrum of cycling interests. Club rides are scheduled year round and range from en try-level to 100-mile expert rides. FCC sponsors several major cycling events each year: the famous Climb to Kaiser, voted by Bicycling Magazi ne one of the ten toughest rides in the United States, the Bass Lake Powerhouse Double Century, for the long dista nce enthusiasts and several fully supported members-only rides each year. We protect the rights of cyclist by following local, state, and national affairs as they concern cycling. FCC is in the forefront of bicycle advocacy in and around the Fresno area by promoting safe bike lanes and routes. If you like to ride, FCC has a place for you.
