A Lucky KittyWhen visiting a Japanese or
Chinese restaurant or shop, you’velikely seen a cat figurine with one orboth paws in the air, perchedsomewhere near the cash register.Called maneki neko, which isJapanese for “beckoning cat,” thisfriendly feline is a traditional symbol ofluck and prosperity.
Maneki neko first appeared duringJapan’s Edo period (1603–1867). Themost popular legend regarding thestatue’s origin is about a cat thatsaved the life of a wealthy man bybeckoning him to safety from adangerous storm.
Also known as “lucky cat” or“fortune cat,” these figurines areusually found in places of business, where they are said to attractcustomers, especially if the left paw israised. A raised right paw inviteswealth and good fortune, and a catwith both paws in the air symbolizesprotection and a double dose ofgood luck.
The cat’s color also represents luckin different aspects of life. Thetraditional tricolor or calico pattern isconsidered the luckiest overall. Whitesignifies happiness and joy; gold, wealth; black, safety; red or pink, love;and green, health.
