Testimonial:
If you are hesitant about this course due to the cost or any other reason give Brad Vanderlinde of Pacific
Mako a call. He agreed to do one round of 15 in August, and was hesitant about the results. But on day three when it was time to do the report out he was so happy with the team work that had gone on and the
hands on project results that he decided to put the rest of the shop through this same course only a
month later.

REMINDER—ACCEPTING STEVE DOSANJH SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS NOW
Steve Dosanjh Scholarship
Highland Foundry Ltd., in conjunction with the AFS BC Chapter, is pleased to announce the creation of the Steve Dosanjh Scholarship. This $1000 schol-
arship will be awarded annually to a student that has a family member in the foundry industry. The Dosanjh family and High-land Foundry hope that
this Scholarship will honour Steve’s contributions to the foundry industry, community and family.
Steve’s Story Steve Dosanjh, 48, was fatally injured in a workplace accident at Highland Foundry on May 13th, 2011. Steve was born
in India and immigrated to Canada by himself in 1980 at the age of 17. He came from humble beginnings and worked
hard to get ahead. In his early years he worked as a janitor while going to night school to learn English. He also worked as a tree planter in the Queen Charlotte Islands and later worked on his brother-in-law’s farm. He met his
wife Ronnie in 1986 while volunteering at the Abbotsford police department. After they married, Steve and Ronnie
had a son named Charlie in 1988 and a daughter named Karen in 1989. He started in the foundry industry at Robar
Industries Ltd. in 1989. Over the years Steve worked at Century Pacific Foundry, Robar again and finally went to
Highland Foundry in January of 2008. Throughout the years, in addition to sponsoring his parents to come to Cana-
da, Steve became an entrepreneur in real-estate buying several pieces of property to be used as rental properties.
Steve had many hobbies and loves that included volunteering at the Abbotsford RCMP department, going to the gym,
his dog, his 2007 black Corvette and most importantly his family. He loved his family and spent lots of time with his
kids and often went with his wife for cruises in the Corvette.
Purpose The purpose of this scholarship program is to provide support to families with college age students whose family member works in the foundry indus-
try. The scholarship is intended to provide financial assistance to those students who might otherwise be unable to obtain a college education.
Scholarship Description The scholarship is for $1,000 and will be paid in June near the end of each academic year.
The scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior or currently enrolled college student with a family member in the foundry industry.
Each year the AFS BC Board of Directors, in consultation with Highland Foundry, will decide the recipient of the scholarship.
A personal interview with each of the top finalists may be conducted as part of the selection process.
Qualifications for Award Application for scholarship (maximum 2 pages) must be submitted by the student themself, including a photograph of the applicant (for publicity
purposes only) to AFS BC Board of Directors (send to Casey Sheriland, [email protected]) on or before the application due date of
April 30th.
Applicant must be a graduating high school senior or post-secondary education student.
Applicant has a family member who works in the foundry industry.
Applicant must have strong family commitment.
Within reason, priority will be given to Lord Tweedsmuir graduates.
Exceptions to certain requirements may be made by the BC AFS Board of Directors and President of Highland Foundry Ltd.
Evaluation Criteria
The AFS BC Board of Directors will review the applications according to the following criteria:
Overall GPA

RECAP—AFS Hockey Night—Vancouver Giants
Thank you to everyone that came out and enjoyed a great WHL game between our Vancouver Giants and the Kelowna Rockets on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013. This was the tenth year running for
our AFS Hockey Night. Sure, the end result wasn’t the best with
Vancouver losing 5—1 to Kelowna, but the food was great and so was the view of the action!
A highlight of the evening was Joe Sakic Hall of Fame Night!
Burnaby Joe, who was added to the hall in November 2012, played his junior hockey for the Portland Winter-
hawks and also spent two seasons with the Swift Current Broncos, preparing for what would end up being a 21-year NHL career in Quebec and Colorado. Sakic won two Stanley Cups, a Conn Smythe and a Hart Trophy, along
with multiple gold medals while representing Canada internationally at the World Junior Championships, World
Championships and the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2002. With his NHL record as ninth all-time in
points (1,641) and 15th in goals (625), Joe Sakic is a worthy addition to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
