Automatic planning with AMCS’ distribu- tion planning system helps JUST EAT manage peak hours. AMCS Case Study Just Eat JUST EAT in brief In 2001, JUST EAT started in Kolding, Denmark taking orders online from end-customers and coordinating with the restaurants. Since 2006, the service has included picking up food from online restaurants in Denmark and delivering at customers’ private homes. It was JUST EAT’s mission to break away from the general opinion that takeaway equals pizzas and burgers which is why they also deliver food from all types of restaurants. Today, JUST EAT is present in 13 countries worldwide, has more than 40,000 restaurants in their network and the company continues to expand rapidly. In Denmark, JUST EAT delivers food in 2 cities with approx. 30 cars and 100 drivers, all of which is planned in AMCS’ system. The rapid expansion of JUST EAT has resulted in an urgent need for a transport planning system. Director of Delivery at JUST EAT, Jesper L. Jakobsen, explains, “When it comes to delivering food, transport planning is a highly complex task. We do not know what the near future brings, we have narrowprick-up and delivery time windows and we want to reduce the amount of kilometres driven without food in the cars. AMCS’ solution helps us manage all the parameters of food delivery and is a vital tool in our daily planning.” Planning food deliveries Time is an important factor in the food delivery business; delivery time, waiting time, peak hours and holiday seasons. For JUST EAT, food preparation time and the time it takes before the food gets cold in the car are also elements which need to be taken into consideration when planning food deliveries. “The distribution should be planned so that the driver spends as little time waiting as possible. In order to get the restaurant started preparing the food in due time, AMCS’ solution calculates driving time to the restaurant and onwards to the customer.” Jesper L. Jakobsen says, “Before implementing AMCS’ solution these calculations were purely estimates and guessing, resulting in a stressful working environment for planners as well as drivers.” “Apart from that, we experience severe peak hours around lunch and dinner time. We cannot even out deliveries over the day like most other industries can. This means that our need for resources like cars and drivers varies a great deal over a work-day and is difficult to optimise. We could easily use more cars on a Friday night, but in the bigger picture, it would not be cost-efficient. Instead, AMCS’ solution helps us utilise the capacity of the cars.” Automatic planning by AMCS’ distribution planning solution with TomTom integration helps us manage peak hours, narrow delivery time windows and thereby increases our customer service drastically.

JUST EAT in briefIn 2001, JUST EAT started in Kolding, Denmark taking orders online from end-customers and coordinating with the restaurants.

AMCS’ solution helps us manage all the parameters of food delivery and is a vital tool in our daily planning.”

Planning food deliveriesTime is an important factor in the food delivery business; delivery time, waiting time, peak hours and holiday seasons.

Jakobsen says, “Before implementing AMCS’ solution these calculations were purely estimates and guessing, resulting in a stressful working environment for planners as well as drivers.”

“Apart from that, we experience severe peak hours around lunch and dinner time. We cannot even out deliveries over the day like most other industries can. Just Eat

Real-time planningIt was important to JUST EAT that AMCS’ solution suite could integrate with TomTom, as every JUST EAT car has a TomTom Business Solution device installed. Jesper L. Jakobsen explains “Orders are booked online in the ERP system, planned in AMCS’ system and pushed to TomTom devices in the cars one at a time.

“Before implementing AMCS’ system our drivers had to juggle several orders in their heads to find out if the delivery was possible within their area. Now, drivers receive order one at a time and can concentrate on providing the best customer service possible”, Jesper L. Jakobsen continues.

“Status updates are sent back to AMCS’ system from TomTom when orders are picked up at the restaurant and delivered at the customer’s address. When a status update is received AMCS’ system performs an automatic calculation of the consequences and shows them graphically and in KPIs to the planner.

“We have set up the system so that AMCS’ solution runs the real-time optimisation incrementally during execution. This means that the system continuously tries to handle delays, insert new orders and improve the KPIs of the plan in real time.

Customer service is our marketing When attaining AMCS’ solution suite, JUST EAT had an objective of delivering 90% of all orders within 1 hour. It is unfortunately impossible to reach 100% as traffic and weather conditions cannot be controlled.

Jesper L. Jakobsen adds, “Nevertheless, AMCS’ system enables us to inform our customers in due time if deliveries are delayed. As delivery accuracy is central for us, the information regarding delivery time is of great value to us. We are using this information for sending text messages to end-customers about estimated time of delivery.”

“We see customer service as the new marketing. Thus, word of mouth is important to us; if our customers experience poor service and delays they are less likely to recommend us to family and friends.”

Major benefits from implementing the system:

XX Increase in productivity by 15% with the same amount of resources

XX Reduction of 5% in average mileage per delivery

XX Overview of transport planning scenario

XX Less stressful working environment for planners and drivers

XX Higher service level and hence happier customers

XX Better overview of long-term planning e.g. B2B customers

Jesper L. Jakobsen concludes, “AMCS’ solution helps us look into the future and plan ahead. Now, we are able to better utilise the capacity of the cars and drive as few kilometres as possible with empty cars. AMCS’ system has been a central factor in us reaching our service levels while reducing costs at the same time.”
