Michael Mann’s 1986 adaptation of Thomas Har-ris’ novel Red Dragon was the first movie to bring cannibalistic academic Dr. Hannibal Lecter (in this instance spelled Lecktor due to rights issues) to the big screen.

Robert De Niro chews both characters and scenery in a manic performance as Max Cady, an ex-convict who terrorises lawyer Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte) for apparently failing to defend him effectively in court fourteen years earlier.

An indifferent and Funny movie villains can be threatening as a villain with an almost cartoon-like evil uniform like Jason Vorhees from Friday the 13th. In The Matrix (1999), the army of ‘faceless’ agents are cold and emotionless and suggest an unbeatable threat with which the hero cannot reason or negoti-ate.

The all-powerful emotionless villain is portrayed excellently in the X-Files TV series by William B. Davis as the Cigarette Smoking Man. Throughout the series he is constantly in control of the heroes and any attempts to kill him are deemed self-destructive or futile. His power over the protagonists’ behaviour is linked to his role in the Syndicate, a mysterious organisation who seemingly are more powerful than the U.S. government.

On the opposite end of the scale are the villains that are emotive, excitable and with exaggerated perso-nas as demonstrated by Heath Ledger’s villain in the most-recent Batman film, The Joker. The latest incarnation of the Clown Prince of Crime perfectly conveys his lack of empathy and almost-humorous contempt for human life. The most prominent aspect of The Joker is his colourful clothing and unusual physical appearance, with white face make-up, dyed green hair and smudged red lipstick.

How To Make A Great Funny Movie Villainby: Mohd Ishtiak

They’re wicked and foul with the stench of 40,000 years. But what would movies be without them? While most are truly quite horrific, oth-ers are actually funny. But throughout the many years of cinematic history, one fact has always re-mained constant about movie villains... we love

to hate them.

Heroes get all the hype, but deep down, we all love a good villain. I can take or leave the square-jawed boy scout, the do-gooder who gets the girl and saves the day; but the villain is a different kettle of genetically modified laser wielding fish altogether.

Funny Villain have more fun and get most of the best lines. Movie history is littered with fiendish foes, evil overlords and malevolent masterminds we loved to hate. The summer blockbuster is the perfect breeding ground for evildoers and this year’s pageant of box office behemoths provides rich pickings, from robots out for revenge to muggle-hating wizards.

Cinema is filled with memorable villains. Whether it’s the sardonic cheer of Gert Frebe’s Auric Goldfinger, or the sneering oiliness of Die Hard’s Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), the movies are full of superb, loveably evil perfor-mances. The hero may get the girl and save the world in most instances, but it’s the villain who gets most of the quotable lines.

It’s like the alignment of the planets. Occasion-ally, a great director, an exemplary script and a gifted actor will join together on the same project, creating the kind of unsettling per-formances that linger in the memory for years afterwards.

How to Work and Survive in the Film and TV Industry: The 10

Commandments of Filmmakingby Peter D Marshall

I have learned many things during my career in the film industry, but one of the most valuable les-sons I have learned was to remain human at all costs. And by this I mean to treat others as you would like to be treated yourself. During my 39 years in the film and television business, I have worked as a PA, grip, electri-cian, assistant cameraman, commercial produc-tion manager, first assistant director, TV series creative consultant, television producer and director. I have also had the opportunity to work on all kinds of productions, from industrial films to documentaries; television commercials to music videos; TV series to Hollywood feature films. Making a film is a stressful job and you have to remember that there are many careers and a lot of money on the line every time the camera rolls. When you enter this business, you are stepping into the world of “entertainment.” TV and mov-ies are just one part of this “make-believe” en-vironment – dance, theatre and music are some other examples. This is a business of artistic expression, massive egos and huge amounts of cash – a recipe for disaster if I ever saw one! It is also a business where you can lose your soul if you’re not careful. Remember the often cited (and industry change-able) quote of Hunter S. Thompson: “The (tele-vision) business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side.”

13Continue >

With that in mind, I created “The Ten Command-ments of Filmmaking” which is my way of showing you how to work and survive in this business – with-out getting OR giving ulcers! NOTE: This list was written primarily for First AD’s and Directors. C1) It’s only a movie – no one gets hurt. This one should be obvious. Making any kind of film or TV production can be risky because there are many natural hazards on a film set. Crew members can trip over cables, fall off platforms, have equip-ment tumble on them, burn and cut themselves, slip on stairs and slippery surfaces etc. Then there are the added hazards that are specific to our industry: breathing atmosphere smoke for long periods, accidents involving insert cars or process trailers, accidents from stunts and special effects and noise hazards such as loud explosions and gunfire. All crew members should be aware of the safety issues working on any set. If you have any concerns, you should talk to your shop steward, union rep or the 1st AD who is the set Safety Supervisor. C2) Ask lots of questions – never assume anything. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Like the expression says, “The only dumb question is the one that was never asked.” If something doesn’t feel right, or it doesn’t ring true, or it doesn’t make sense, ask ques-tions. Solve it now. Assuming it will all work out “on the day” is wrong. If something in the script doesn’t make sense, or you feel something is not working, deal with it right away. Fix it, change it, eliminate it, solve it, get rid of it. Whatever IT is, do something about it before you go to camera. C3) There are no rules in filmmaking – only sins!

14Continue >

This is probably my best piece of advice. It’s not original – it’s a partial quote from the legendary director, Frank Capra: “There are no rules in filmmaking. Only sins! And the cardinal sin is dullness. I want you to always remember this quote, and as you get up each morning and walk onto that set, refer to it often! C4) Listen to the people who know more than you do. When was a Second AD on the TV Series “Hitchhiker” in 1985, I had to run the set for the First AD while he did some scheduling. Well, after a bit I got a little flus-tered, as this was my first time running the entire set. Suddenly I heard my name. When I turned around, the dolly grip was waving me over to him. As I came closer, he smiled and said, “Peter, it’s block, light, rehearse, tweak, shoot!” Words I will always remember. (Thanks Mike!) The crew work on the set – all the time! That’s what they do. They see directors and First AD’s come and go. They know more than you do. Always will. Listen to them and you will become a better AD. C5) You have to EARN respect – not demand it. The hierarchy of a movie is very much like the hier-archy of an Army: General’s at the top and Privates at the bottom. And just like the Army, there are certain people in the higher positions that you are unable to get along with. Directors, 1st AD’s and DOP’s form the “Triumvirate” of any movie set. They are the people in charge. And many times you will be faced with the difficult task of working for months with one (or more) of these people who are egotistical, abusive, or sometimes not even very good at their job.

This will happen – and sometimes it happen’s a lot. How I deal with this, and suggest you do the same, is to remember this military expres-sion, “You need to respect the Rank – but you don’t have to respect the person.” C6) Don’t abuse your power – use “Power Through” not “Power Over.” As a First AD, you have a very powerful posi-tion in the film industry. The Director hires you for your organizational skills and your command of the set; the Producers look to you to make sure the movie comes in on time and on budget; the crew look to you for leadership. The “rank” of 1st AD means you get to carry “a big stick”. But a lot of AD’s will abuse this power and yell and scream and make every-one’s life miserable. In other words, they will take advantage of their position and use their power over people. My philosophy is to take the other route. In other words, use “power through.” What this means is to work with your crew and bring them all together as a team and work it out together. The crew know you are in charge. You don’t have to flaunt it. C7) Don’t be afraid to change your mind. I read a self-help book once that also had a set of ten commandments and one of them was “It’s okay to change your mind.” This makes a lot of sense. Especially when you are a Director or First AD because you are making decisions all the time and some of them may not be the right ones after you get more information or listen to other people. The problem happens if let your ego get in the way.

15

I did that once. I thought I had the right answer and I didn’t want to change the schedule even though the director and the PM thought we couldn’t make it. Well, they were right and I cost the production money. Not just because I didn’t want to do the extra work, but also because I was afraid the crew would feel I didn’t know what I was doing (which turned out to be correct in this instance anyway.) Lesson learned! C8) A healthy Ego is necessary – self importance is unnecessary. There is an important distinction between Ego and Self-importance. Ego can be defined as “your consciousness of your own identity.” You need an ego in this business because Ego is important for your survival. Ego helps you to believe in yourself, it helps you to get up in the morning knowing that you still have things to learn but you are good at your job and you will get through your day by being fair and respecting others. On the other hand, self-importance (or what I call misplaced ego) is “an inflated feeling of pride in your superiority to others.” I believe it is this trait (more than anything else) that makes working and surviving in the entertainment industry harder than it has to be. C9) Have a sense of humour – learn to laugh at yourself. This rule should probably be #1 on this list.

In my experience, the best sets are the ones that have a relaxed and professional atmosphere pre-sided over by a creative director with no insecu-rity issues; an experienced 1st AD with no attitude problems; and a DOP who loves the collaboration process and realizes that “making a film is not all about the lighting!” Making a movie is hard work, and the occasional break from the stress and intensity of it by a film crew having a laugh pays for itself many times over. I have found that my sense of humour (and my large repertoire of bad jokes) have gotten me through some very difficult times. C10) Take 10 at lunch – and change your socks and shoes. As a First AD you stand on your feet all day. Tak-ing a moment after lunch to change you socks and shoes is a blissful moment – it actually re-energiz-es you. There is probably some psychological or chemical reason for this that I don’t understand, but whatever it is, try it because it does work! I like to take about 10 – 15 minutes on my own somewhere off set during lunch to have a quiet time. This is where I can “recharge by batteries.” All day you have to be on your game and make hundreds of decisions with the crew constantly asking you questions. Taking time some time for yourself is really, really important to keep your body relaxed and your mind sharp.

Where are you from?

I’m from Richmond, VA but I was born in Newark, NJ How did your parents influence you growing up?

Not really at all….. I mean I got my talents from them obviously my mother writes and I hear my dad is a cameraman in Hawaii so other than that, they have no influences in my life then or now. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grow up?

As far as I can remember I always wanted to be in the film business. I would pretend I was making mov-ies whenever I played with my GI Joe and Star Wars action figures. Only thing was missing was a super 8 camera… What lead you to the road that you are on now business wise?

It was the only thing that I felt my life was for I had no other idea of what I wanted to do with it when I was younger. Even with battle depression, I knew making movies was the only thing that made me happy not those drugs I was prescribed. Tell me about your business.

The Peoples Network is a production company that caters to Indie films, web series and music videos. Owned by me and my beautiful wife Renee Peoples (NOTE: she did not pay me to say that…lol), we be-lieve in giving actors an opportunity to get into films and use us a stepping stool to get to the next level.

If anyone in business could be your mentor who would it be?

Roger Corman, he is the major key player in the careers of people like Spielberg, Cameron, Scorsese, Deniro just to name a few. He gave them all their first start to being A listers in Hollywood. He also produced the original FAST and FURIOUS movie. What do you love most about your career?

Giving new undiscovered actors a shot at be-ing a lead in a movie just seeing their excite-ment and hunger is amazing. How do you balance family life with your career?

We are a movie family from my wife to my kids who help out behind the scenes and sometimes in front of the camera. Where do you see yourself in the next year?

Inspiring a new generation of filmmakers, with my book and workshop; “HOW TO MAKE MOVIES AND MONEY MANUAL”. It can be found on amazon.com for $19.99. It’ as great investment for those who need step by step instructions. What is Your Ambizion? (Legacy)

To continue to do what I love to do and be a blessing to those who want to receive the blessings I offer.

Photography In A Pinchby: Barney Newton

Continue >

Good photographers try to be prepared for almost any contingency. Unfortunately, if you tried to carry everything you'd need to meet every contingency in

the field, you'd have to pack like a Bedouin trader.

Many times that simply isn't possible and other times it's not desirable. So the seasoned photogra-pher learns to be resourceful. Here are a few miscel-laneous tips that can save your back, particularly on short trips near home.

A Monopod

In all but the most extreme lighting situations a monopod can substitute nicely for a tripod and is a lot easier to carry. With practice you'll be able to hold a monopod nearly as stable as a tripod, for a short time anyway.

Another trick for stabilizing a monopod is to wrap the camera strap around your upper arm and push on the monopod while exerting gentle backward pressure on the strap. Similarly, you can place a large clamp on your monopod and use it as a shoulder brace, almost like a gun mount. It might look a little funny but it works surprisingly well.

Working In Sand

For those times you have to drag a tripod to the beach or sandy area, grab three tennis balls on the way out the door. Cut a hole big enough for your tripod leg and fit a tennis ball over each end.

The tennis balls won't sink in the sand, will keep most of the grit out of the end of your tripod leg and you can throw them away when you're finished.

Another great thing about working at the beach is you don't need to carry sand bags, just bring bags. There's usually plenty of sand already on the beach. Those are priceless for weighting reflectors, which tend to act like a sail in ocean breezes.

Bring A Cooler

But leave the ice packs at home. A cooler has several advantages over an equipment case in many situations. They're solid, many have a handle and wheels, and you can sit or stand on them in a pinch. If you lose or break it, you're only out about $40.

You can still carry drinks with the camera gear, but carefully. Get those drink cozies you put in the freezer. Those will keep your drinks cold without bringing down the temp too much in the cooler. The last thing you want to do is bring cold optics or a camera out into warm, muggy atmosphere. Expect instant condensa-tion if you do.

Carry a Bag of Rubber Bands

They're just so handy for so many things and so easy to carry. You can use them for emergency repairs and to keep papers from flying away.

A fat rubber band is handy for dislodging a stuck filter. Wrap the rubber band around the edge of the filter and that should give you enough grip to get it loose.

And, if you're stuck waiting outside a court-house waiting for a photo op, they're also endlessly entertaining for taunting your fellow photographers.

Incident Light Meter

23

Many photographers still carry a light meter, even in the days of high end digital SLRs. If you're packing light you can use a styrofoam cup over the end of your lens and use your camera's light meter, hold it in place with one of your rubber bands.

Note that cups do come in different thicknesses, so you may want to calibrate yours using the Sunny 16 rule before you leave.

Record the exposure at the subject, then walk back to shoot the picture.

You can increase your laptop’s function-ality by getting a printer that goes with it. There are so many printers for laptops avail-able nowadays, for sure there’s a specific model out there that can meet your needs. However, the challenging part is looking for that specific unit. Worry not because below are some simple guidelines on buying one.

Going for a reliable brand is a good idea. It may not be the cheapest one around, but you know it’s going to be of service for you for a long time. Besides, in case you need to purchase accessories or parts, you won’t have a hard time finding them. Purchasing something that’s from a cheap brand might only get broken easily.

Go for something that equals the portabil-ity of the laptop you own. Some models may have compact sizes but they may be on the heavy side. It’s also possible for a large model to be light. Find a unit that’s both compact and lightweight so you may lug it around hassle-free. There are models with such specifications, especially designed for people who are on the go always.

However, when picking a model that’s com-pact, see to it that it can work on standard media sizes like letter, legal or executive. There are units out there that are limited when it comes to media sizes handled. That’s why you should point out the size of documents you commonly print. For flex-ibility, choose a model which can also work on different media types.

Because of size discrepancies, all the ports you can find on a desktop computer may not be found on a laptop, especially a small one. For this reason, the printer you’re eyeing should have a hi-speed USB 2.0 interface for easy hooking up with a laptop. Purchasing a printer that only sports a parallel port may not be a good idea at all.

A monochrome one is usually cheaper than some-thing which can churn out both monochrome and color prints. Point out what your everyday print-ing needs are to be able to decide which of them to pick. It’s also important to consider the resolu-tion. This is measured in terms of dpi (dots per inch). If what you need to print are documents containing plain text, something that has a 600 x 600 dpi resolution is okay. A higher resolution is better for printing graphics.

The ppm, or short for pages per minute, will show you how fast the unit works. By and large, a printer is capable of producing more pages a min-ute when doing black-and-white tasks. You should also check out of the first-page-out time on the specifications list. This indicates how long will it take for the document to be printed from the time the data is transmitted to the printer.

Take a look as several different printers for lap-tops available out there. Go online and compare their features and prices. Read review by experts or drop by forum sites where the model you’re considering to buy is being talked about.

When you truly love what you do, you are loved by those whom you serve. This is why passion for your chosen line of work will eventually lead to a long, successful, and happy life.
