Bi..d Table Wa rsby
John Smart
11 shone golden brown in the late afternoon sun. It was stra ight and true andjus t in the righ t place on the lawn and I said la Phyllis. 'They won ', beable10 resist if. The ne", bi rd table would transform ou r gard en into an avianparadise. I put some bread on so that they could have a late feed and we leftit at that.
They didn' t come. Not only did they stay away but they compoun ded theinsult by Ilying over the back fence to Mr 'always sweeping the back step"who lives behind. They turned their backs on us. I redoubled my efforts. Isa id to Phylhs, " shall put out a banquet fit for a king or atleast the birdequivalent!' I broke the bread into small pieces with plenty of crumbs forthe linle fellows and larger hi ts for the b igger birds. I set it on the bird tablewith al l the care of a head waiter at Cla ridges and I watched from an upperwindow. My heart fell. OlTthey went uvcr the fence to Mr ' whatsit's' .Tails up and d iving down to his invisible feeding trough! I gut the steps andbalanced them on our rocke ry. Look ing over the fence I cou ldn't believe myeyes.
Ta lk about rubb ish. A man with one eye could sec that Mr "Fhingy's ' birdtable was not plumb. It was. in fact. rickety! Covered in bits o f moss anddrop pings il contained the scrubbiest old bits o f bread and hard bacon rindanyone cou ld imagine. I cl imbed down before Mr ' So and So' could pokehis nose out and re-thought my approach. Working in the shed I put a fewlandin g ridges for the ir lin le claws 10grip and then J fash ioned some oddhits ufbarnboo with d ean rag 10 polish their beaks on.
As the weeks went hy I made that bird table into the Ritz o f back garden birdtables . If l coul d have done it I would have offered wee kend breaks to someof ou r rare r visih' rs. T wo for rnc price IIf one. Ditferent so ns o f bacon rind;whole meal. half meal; plain .... hitc bread! I was go ing out o f my mind andPhyJlis was locking worried. I felt drawn, sti ll the hirds refused my table, ignored my fare and new over to Mr ' mows Ihe lawn before e\eryune else 's"ricke ty racke ty, scruffy apology for a bird table.
Near exhaustion we sat in the garden gaz ing at the tenantless table. ' It's nogood Phyllis.' I said, ' they just won' t come. we shall havc to give up theidea ofavian bliss in o ur garden and scrap the bird table.' Phyllis didn 't sa)'anything, j ust gazed ove r the lawn with her green eyes and purredcontentedly .

The approach of the festive season brought two social events to members. Thefirst, a Sausage and Mash dinner. was atte nded by 40 members who enjoyed ahearty meal. a musica l enterta inment laced with jo kes and humorous anecdotesand a general air ofconviviality which sent them on their way full o f good cheer. The second event was held at our Dec ember meeting when we had a tradit ionalChristmas buffe t. Attended by some 70 members. the evening co mmenced witha presentation of two cheques for £250 each to Or Brown. The first to be usedto r two oroscopes for the nurses at Dersingham surgery, the second fur thecommunity nurses to use for the needs of their Dersiug ham patients.
A splend id buffet . which was provided by members was enjoyed by all as wasthis opportunity to have a good old chinwag with fellow members Six brainteasing quizz es prepared by Dorcen and Dcrck Asker rounded off the evening. However it was suddenly realised that our 10 o'clock deadline was almost uponus and the hall had to be cleared quick ly. A few words of encouragement fromour Cha irman and everybody fell to and. literally within minutes, St Cccilia's wasconverted from a scene of secular Yuletide festivity to onc of ecclesiast icalsanctity and serenity - a transformation scene worthy of any pantomime and afitting end to a most enjoyable evening .
Our socie ty's first meeting at our new venue of St Cccilia's Church was areso unding success. With over 70 members attending, our speaker Mrs RuthGooch of'Thom croft Clcmatis NUTSI.':T)I. received a warm welcome . Her talkconcentrated on the various "fami lies" o f this lovely genus and the manyinnovative ways they can be used in the garde n. Generally regarded as climberson trellis. pergola and obelisk. Mrs Gooch showed various slides demonstrati ngtheir other uses such as cl imbing through roses, trees and shrubs. scramblingthrough flower beds and ruck gardens and using the herbaceous variet ies asborder plants. In passing she particularly recommended the "vitic1c1 la" group asideal plants for the newcomer to clcrnatis cultivation.
The seco nd talk of her talk focused on her trips to Japan and Estonia where shecollected some new var ieties tor her nursery. Two ditTerent styles of garden ingwere demonstrated by slides. The Japanese, very simple, mostly containergrown and, unusually, sometimes used as houseplants : The Estonian. in openground, with severe winters using especia lly bred cultivars, but with magn ificentresults based solely on cow manure.
All in all a most info rmative even ing full of ideas for the keen and receptiveaudience.

If It Should Be
by Margaret Alexander © 2002
If it should be that I grow wea kAnd pain should keep me from my sleep
Then you must do what must be doneFor this last battle can't be won.
You will be sad - I understandDon't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day more than all the restYour love for me must stand the test.
We've had so many happy yearsWhat is to come can hold no fears.
You do not want me to suffer soThe time has com e, please let me go.
Take me where my needs they'll tendAnd please stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to meUntil my eyes no longer sec.
I know in time that you will seeThe kindness that you do for mc.
Although my tail its last has wavedFrom pain and sutTering I've been saved.
Please do not grieve it must be youWho has this painfu l thing to do.
We've been so close we two these yearsDon' t let your heart hold back its tears.
