The Pekin Lions club recently

held a soup sampler supper re-

cently. They had 8 soups that

sold out and raised over $700 for

their annual Christmas food bas-

ket program where they give to

over 300 needy families in the

community.

The Pekin Lions Club is ready with hot chocolate and hotdogs at the Winter Wonderland festival at the Pekin Park! It's A beautiful day so come on out and help us raise funds for our Christmas basket project!

The Lions Club is kicking off its annual donation drive for its 71st Christmas Basket Project. This project provides food for needy families during the holiday of giving, and relies on donations from the public for funding. Over the years the funding has fallen short of the annual goal and the Pekin Lions Club has started several projects in an attempt to reach their goal. A Soup Sampler Supper is held once or twice a year and a Pancake Dinner has been held to obtain additional funds.

There is a lot of need out there, and the Lions’ motto of “We Serve” guides the Pekin Lions Club in our efforts. The Christmas Basket Project is one way we can help our community and every once in a while, we get a ‘Pay Day’ when we see the people who benefit from our hard work and the efforts of the individuals who donate to this project.

This year the Pekin Lions Club hopes to provide 300 families food for the holidays. One box of perishable items and one box of non-perishable items makes up a Christmas Basket. In order to provide 300 baskets, the Pekin Lions Club needs to collect $17,000.

Years ago, we set a goal of 400 baskets but could not collect enough money to reach that goal. We dropped the numbers down to 375 and then 350 and 300 as donations have not maintained the same level over the years.

The baskets will be distributed to the needy families at the Pekin High School Technical Education Center on December 16 from 8:30 until 10:00 AM.

This is a busy day for the Pekin Lions Club. Although non-perishable items are packaged by Value Check, the Pekin Lions ar-rive at the High School around 7:00 AM to begin packaging the perishable items. Anyone wishing to help during this distribution is invited to do so.

In order to receive a basket families must be nominated. Anyone can nominate a needy family using the club’s nomination form.

This nomination form can be found several times a week on the Pekin Daily Times Community Page and here http://www.pekinlions.org/…/Christmas-Basket-Nomination-For….

Cash donations toward this worthy cause can be mailed to Pekin Lions Christmas Basket Project, P.O. Box 751, Pekin, IL 61555-0751.

From the editor:… You know this is a District Newsletter, don’t you? You know other Lions in the Dis-

trict are interested in what your club is doing, don’t you? You know you might get Lions from other

clubs to support your fundraisers, if they knew about them, don’t you? You should because I tell you

once a month. Yet very few clubs take advantage of this periodical. Why? I’d almost bet the same peo-

ple don’t bother to open the State magazine, either and Lion Austin does a super job of that.

On a very sunny afternoon, Saturday November 25th Avon Lions Brian Backstrom, Dick Brown, Joe Hendl, Al Henning

and project chairman Dave Serven installed 18 new memorial bricks and 2 corrected bricks in the Avon Veterans Memorial..

The first photo shows Joe Hendl and Dave Serven working to remove the first of the blank bricks that needed to be removed.

Once the first brick was removed, which was like getting the first olive out of the jar, Dick Brown and Brian Beckstrom

joined in, and made quick work out of removing the old and installing the new bricks. Not pictured is Al Henning ho was

picking up debris, loading old bricks and tamping the new ones in place so they would stay.

Space for installation of more bricks is available any anyone interested in honoring someone with a memorial brick can contact

any Avon Lion to place ann order. Additional bricks will not be installed until next spring.

Continuing Prayers for PDG Jim Entwistle is still recovering from a stroke. He is in Kindred? Hospital in Peoria.

Last report as not optimistic.

PDG Jim McCarter is on the mend. They are going to be iin the Peoria area around the first of the year.

PDG Rich Gordon has a few more weeks to recover from his foot surgery. Prayers are needed for Lion Sandy to sur-

vive his healing process.

On Tuesday, November 21, Avon Lion Barbara Baker, chairwoman for the Avon Lions Club youth reading programs, presented personalized dictionaries the members of the third grade class at Avon Elementary School. Supporting Lion Baker were Lions Joe Hendel and Al Henning. Hosting the event were the stu-

dents' teacher, Naydeen Mahr, and school principal, Kristi Anderson who insisted on taking the photo in place of Lion Henning, the club's ace reporter.

A profit of $1640.95 was made at the donut booth. Which wasn’t bad for one good day out of 4.

Really cold and nasty on the first Saturday. Did really good on the first Sunday, The second Satur-

day rained off and on and the event was cancelled on the second Sunday due to the tent being de-

stroyed by the storm. Some product had water damaged cases and couldn’t be returned so were

donated o the Central Illinois Blind Peoples Center and the South Side mission of Peoria. It will cost

between $200 to $300 to replace the tent.

Ad Book

IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN! Time for the District Ad Book. The size and the cost of

the ads are as follows:

1. Full Page $60 black and white or $70 color

2. 1/2 page (4 1/4” by 3 3/4”) $30 black or white and $35 color

3. 1/4 page (4 1/4” x 1 7/8) $20 black and white or $25 color

Deadline for Ads is March 5, 2018. Deadline for payment is March 15, 2018

Make checks payable to District 1H and mail with a copy of the ad to Lion Jane

Martin PO Box 597 Princeville, IL 61559 or email [email protected]

You can email the ad to Jane and send her a check. If the adis to be a colored

one it has to be sent in color.

If you email the ad do not send as a PDF as she may have to make changes

and can’t change a PDF file.

The ad cannot be a copy of a previous years ad because it will not scan in

well and the quality will not do the ad justice

Your help in this project, and promptness in selling the ads and sending them to

me, will be greatly appreciated by me and the district. Time will pass quickly, so

I urge each of you to do the best you can. I encourage each club to take out an

ad for themselves , as it is a good opportunity to advertise your fund raising

events. Each club has at least one business that helps them throughout the year

and would probably purchase an ad to advertise their business.
