Welcome to the last week of Term 1. Wow, how quickly did it fly by?

We have had a busy couple of weeks and I summarise the details below.

Year 12 students participated in the Driver education program run by Snowy Hydro. This involved a

theory lesson and then hands on experience in a specially modified car at the Rosewood skidpan. All the

students reported having a great time and learning a great deal.

All secondary students participated in the second of three planned sessions with the University of

Canberra ‘Aspire’ program. The third and final session takes place on Wednesday 29 May 2013 and will

be followed by a visit to the University prior to the end of Term 2.

All staff and students struggled valiantly on the Thursday before the long weekend to complete the

Athletics carnival before the inclement weather shut things down. A good deal was completed and other

events have been finished off at school. I express my thanks to Miss Annetts and Mr Gorman and their

support teams for their efforts in relation to this event.

Our School Cross Country event is the next major athletics activity to be held and will be held on Thursday

9 May 2013, weather permitting.

Many thanks to those parents who have taken advantage of the fees discount already and could I urge

those of you who haven’t finalised fee payments for 2013 thus far to do so before the end of term if you

wish to obtain the 25% discount.

The first two days of next term, Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 April 2013, are both School Development

Days. In a previous “Scoop” only the first day was identified. The first day for students next term is

Wednesday 1 May 2013. On these two days staff will be spending time organising for the

implementation of the new Australian curriculum documents for New South Wales that will take place for

English, Mathematics, Science and History for K-6 and Years 7 and 9 in November of this year at our

school.

The Department of Education and Communities auditor visited the school two weeks ago and the school

processes were commended in most areas. We have a few areas to tighten up and improve and will do

so following receipt of the final audit report.

The 2012 Annual School Report is available from the school office or online at the website. Parents may

request a hard copy of the report if they would like one. All of our College I students who have VET

subjects are involved in their first work placement this week and I know that they will have a wonderful

learning experience.

It has been a fantastic term, as I write 3843 class merits have been issued to students. This has resulted

in the awarding of 130 Bronze Level Certificates [84% of the student body], 35 Silver Level Certificates

[22% of the student body] and 3 Gold Level Certificates [2 % of the student body].

To all of our students, staff and community thank you for all of your efforts and endeavours this term.

Have a wonderful autumn break and we will see you all again next term on Wednesday 1 May 2013.

Happy holidays!

Michael Rathborne

HOW2Learn focuses on how we can be muscle learners...

NOT bucket learners. Muscles grow, buckets overflow!

'I believe absolutely in the importance and power of the

shared table.

In many cultures, eating together around a table is the

centre of family life.

It is the meeting place, where thoughts are shared,

ideas challenged,

news is exchanged and where the participants leave the

table restored in many ways.’

Stephanie Alexander

Cooking will resume next term in Stephanie Alexander classes. We look forward to exploring new and

exciting foods with the Primary students.

What is Resilience? How can I become a more resilient

learner? Resilience is the emotional aspect of learning

where learners are ready,

willing and able to

WORK THROUGH

DIFFICULTIES WHEN THE

PRESSURE MOUNTS

I can get in the ‘flow’ when learning.

I can recognise and manage my distractions.

I can pay attention to things and notice details about those

things.

I can keep going even though I may feel like giving up.

Healthy Eating Tips!

Some interesting vegetable facts

Frozen vegetables are usually snapped frozen

on ripening and can have the same nutritional

value as fresh vegetables. Try to include

different vegetables every day.

Different coloured vegetables provide different

vitamins and other nutrients. Eating enough

vegetables can protect you against many

lifestyle diseases including heart disease,

stroke, some cancers and diabetes.

Tempting taste buds

Some children dislike vegetables, however they are still an important food group. Some ideas to tempt

reluctant vegetable eaters include:

Disguising them by blending, mashing and adding them to soups, stews or sauces. Offer them raw. Lots of kids prefer crunchy vegetables rather than cooked ones. Carrots,

cauliflower, beans or broccoli are great eaten raw. Involve children in preparing or growing vegetables. This increases their familiarity and

willingness to try new vegetables. Serve cut up carrots, celery, tomato and cucumber with salsa, dips, cottage cheese or salad

dressing. Add kidney beans, red lentils, baked beans or four-bean mix to casseroles, mince or stews. Mix mashed potatoes with mashed pumpkin or sweet potato.

Children need to eat vegetables every day…

Ideas for encouraging kids to eat vegetables include:

baked beans on toast for breakfast or baked bean toasted sandwiches grated vegetables such as carrot and zucchini into stews, casseroles and mince salad in sandwiches or a small salad to go with a sandwich sliced vegetables, for example cherry tomatoes, cucumber wedges or carrot sticks.

FUNKY HAIR DAY

A great day was had by all last Friday, when we participated in Funky Hair Day! The day

was about raising awareness of blood diseases, such as Leukaemia. The day was a great

success and the Student Representative Council (SRC) raised over $300.00 for the

Leukaemia Foundation. A big thank you to the Batlow Technology School community for

your support!

PURPLE DAY Students at Batlow Technology School supported ‘Purple Day’. Purple Day is an

international grassroots effort dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy

worldwide, a big thank you to everyone who got in the spirit and who made generous

donations! Your support is much appreciated!

YEAR 7 ART

Year 7 Art students have been working on different elements of art and using a variety of materials. Modelling clay was popular and some of the finished products were entered into the Batlow Show Junior section. The girls Isabella Kirkby, Sophia Kirkby, Emma Kynaston, Kate Kynaston, Harmony Simpson, Mercedes Walsh Campbell and Gianna Noldin gained first place and “People's Choice” for their work and the boys received second placings. Well done to all!

NEW PLAQUE FOR PETER WOODCOURTYARD

A new and modern plaque has been placed in the garden entrance to the “Peter Wood Courtyard” to

replace the original one which had deteriorated to the extent of

being unreadable.

A new inscription will also be

put into place outside A2

acknowledging the “Martin

Keenan” computer Lab.

BATLOW SHOW INVOLVEMENT

Batlow Technology School was well supported

at this year’s Batlow Show with an impressive

ANZAC DAY COMPETITION

This year students in Year 10 History were a part of the

ANZAC Day writing competition organised by Federal

Member Mr Michael McCormack. Students were invited to

write an essay, short story or poem of no more than 250

words on this year’s theme “ANZAC Day in the Riverina”.

Most of our students created heart-felt poems that

reflected our most important national day. Our students

were visited by Federal Member Mr McCormack on Monday

and received special signed certificates.

The girls were encouraged to enter again next year and

were humbled by the experience. The students who

received certificates were; Emily Schuller, Lilly Kirkby,

Jessica Boxsell, Hayley Murrell, Sjoujke Vanderland and

Jessica Lesniack.

Congratulations to all students who participated in the

competition this year!

ANZAC DAY MARCH THURSDAY 25 APRIL 2013

Students have been invited to participate in the Batlow ANZAC Day March on Thursday 25 April 2013.

Staff from Batlow Technology School will supervise students during the march and the service and on

return to the Batlow RSL car park. Attending students are required to assemble at the RSL car park in full

school uniform at 2.45 pm.

TABLE TENNIS

On Tuesday 9 April 2013 Floyd Cross, Tessa Cross, Joel Williams, Zachary Love, Claire Schuller, Emily

Schuller, Rahul Pratap and Brendan Ironside travelled to Albury to compete in two events, the CHS Table

Tennis Knockout and the Dainton Cup, a competition between Murray High School and Batlow

Technology School.

Floyd, Zachary, Rahul and Brendan played extremely well and made it to the semi-finals of the CHS

knockout.

Tessa, Joel, Claire and Emily played for the Dainton Cup which Batlow

Technology School has not previously won. Due to their excellent

skills and determination, this was to be their year and this team won

4-3 against Murray High School and brought home the Cup!!

Well done to both table tennis teams.

ANZAC DAY POEM Anzac day is a day of remembrance,

The day we commemorate their bravery,

A moment of Silence,

To remember the violence,

It's really quite sad and teary,

We gather around as they tell us the story,

About the Anzacs heroic glory,

Not many returned,

But are greatly remembered,

As the men who fought for our freedom,

They sat in the trenches all wet and cold,

Listening and Waiting for a noise,

Most of the men were not that old,

They were still referred to as boys,

They were still and silent as they lurk,

They fought at Gallipoli against the Turk,

We take this day to reflect,

A moment of silence in respect,

For the ANZAC's who fought and died,

Their friends were there alongside,

Their families called them a hero,

We march down the streets,

Wearing our poppy pins,

We will remember them,

For they have made the ultimate win.
