THE WORD OF GOD
Introit Gaudeamus Anglican Chant: E. Elgar
Rejoice we all, and praise the Lord, celebrating a holy day in honor of All Saints: in whose
solemnity the Angels are joyful, and glorify the Son of God. Rejoice in the Lord, O ye
righteous: for it becometh well the just to be thankful. – Psalm 17
Hymn 287: “For all the saints, who from their labors rest” Sine Nomine, stand
Opening Sentences
Priest: Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
People: And blessed be God’s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.
The Collect for Purity
Priest: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you
no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of
your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your
holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Gloria in excelsis (Hymnal S 278)
Glory to God in the highest,
and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King,
almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks,
we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,
Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world:
have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the
Father:
receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Collect of the Day
Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Priest: Let us pray.
Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and
fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace
so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may
come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love
you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives
and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.
The Lessons sit
Lector: A Reading from The Revelation to John. (21: 1-6a)
I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth
had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the
new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride
adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,
"See, the home of God is among mortals.
He will dwell with them as their God;
they will be his peoples,
and God himself will be with them;
he will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more;
mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
for the first things have passed away."
And the one who was seated on the throne said, "See, I am making all
things new." Also he said, "Write this, for these words are trustworthy and
true." Then he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the
beginning and the end."
Lector: The Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 24
Lector: Let us recite, in unison, Psalm 24.
1 The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it,
the world and all who dwell therein.
2 For it is he who founded it upon the seas
and made it firm upon the rivers of the deep.
3 "Who can ascend the hill of the Lord? "
and who can stand in his holy place?"
4 "Those who have clean hands and a pure heart,
who have not pledged themselves to falsehood,
nor sworn by what is a fraud.
5 They shall receive a blessing from the Lord
and a just reward from the God of their salvation."
6 Such is the generation of those who seek him,
of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob.
7 Lift up your heads, O gates;
lift them high, O everlasting doors;
and the King of glory shall come in.
8 "Who is this King of glory?"
"The Lord, strong and mighty,
the Lord, mighty in battle."
9 Lift up your heads, O gates;
lift them high, O everlasting doors;
and the King of glory shall come in.
10 "Who is he, this King of glory?"
"The Lord of hosts,
he is the King of glory."
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Hymn 253: “Give us the wings of faith to rise” San Rocco, stand

Priest: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John (11: 32-44).
People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.
When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and
said to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."
When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also
weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said,
"Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." Jesus
began to weep. So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" But some of them
said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this
man from dying?"
Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a
stone was lying against it. Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the
sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, already there is a stench because
he has been dead four days." Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you
believed, you would see the glory of God?" So they took away the stone.
And Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you for having heard
me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the
crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me." When he
had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" The dead
man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face
wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."
Priest: The Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.
The Sermon: The Reverend David Hodges sit
The Renewal of Baptismal Vows
Priest: Dear friends, as we celebrate this day the glorious feast of All Saints, I invite
you to join me in renewing the solemn promises and vows by which we
committed ourselves to Christ in Holy Baptism.
Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil and renew your commitment to
Jesus Christ?
People: I do.
5
Priest: Do you believe in God the Father?
People: I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
Priest: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
People: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
Priest: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
People: I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Priest: Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking
of bread, and in the prayers?
People: I will, with God’s help.
Priest: Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent
and return to the Lord?
People: I will, with God’s help.
Priest: Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ?
People: I will, with God’s help.
Priest: Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as
yourself?
People: I will, with God’s help.
Priest: Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the
dignity of every human being?
People: I will, with God’s help.
6
Priest: May Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us
a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and bestowed upon us the
forgiveness of sins, keep us in eternal life by his grace, in Christ Jesus our
Lord. Amen.
The Blessing of the Water
Priest: We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit
moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of
Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your
Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy
Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and
resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.
We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with
Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are
reborn by the Holy Spirit.
Now bless this water, we pray you, that it may be a sign to us of our
Baptism, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Antiphon Asperges me Plainsong, Mode 7
Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, O Lord, and I shall be clean:
thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Have mercy upon me, O God, after thy great goodness: *
according to the multitude of thy mercies, do away mine offences.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; *
as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
– Psalm 51: 9, 3

Prayers of the People
Lector: Through baptism, we have been made alive in Christ Jesus. Let us speak the
words of this new life by praying for the whole state of Christ’s Church and
the world, saying: Lord, hear our prayer.
For the Church throughout the world, remembering especially the Anglican
Communion and Episcopal Church; Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury;
Michael, our Presiding Bishop; and Deon, our Bishop; that all might be
faithful, willing to serve, constant in grace, and receptive to newness, let us
pray to the Lord:
People: Lord, hear our prayer.
Lector: For this congregation; David and Kelly, our clergy; and our parish staff, that
we might be eager to welcome, diligent in prayer, and generous in deed, let
us pray to the Lord:
People: Lord, hear our prayer.
Lector: For our nation, town, and neighborhoods, that we all might be advocates of
the lowly, defenders of liberties, and models of justice, let us pray to the
Lord:
People: Lord, hear our prayer.
Lector: For the well-being of all who work and all who seek employment, let us
pray to the Lord:
People: Lord, hear our prayer.
Lector: For all who travel, who seek rest, who visit family and friends, and who
enjoy the gifts of creation, let us pray to the Lord:
People: Lord, hear our prayer.
Lector: For our families and friends, for our enemies, for those with whom we disagree,
and for those who are examples of grace in our lives, let us pray to the Lord:
People: Lord, hear our prayer.
Lector: For those who grieve, those in places of care, those who suffer from sickness of
body, mind, or spirit, and those in any peril, especially Dixie Daniels, Howard
Grimmett, Paul Hmiel, and Phoebe Weil, let us pray to the Lord:
People: Lord, hear our prayer.

THE HOLY COMMUNION
The Offertory Anthem Edgar Bainton (1880–1956)
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: For the first heaven and the first earth were
passed away; and there was no more sea. And I, John, saw the holy city, new Jerusalem,
coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them and they shall be
his people, and God himself shall be with them and be their God. And God shall wipe away
all tears from their eyes; And, there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying,
neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away.
– Revelation 21 :1-4
The Presentation (Hymn 380, st. 3) Old 100th, stand
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host:
praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
The Great Thanksgiving: Eucharistic Prayer A
Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Priest: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give God thanks and praise.
Priest: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give
thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
For in the multitude of you saints you have surrounded us with a great cloud
of witnesses, that we might rejoice in their fellowship, and run with
endurance the race that is set before us; and, together with them, receive the
crown of glory that never fades away.
Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels
and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim
the glory of your Name:
10
Choir: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts: Missa Brevis, Grayston Ives
Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. (b. 1948)
Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High.
Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
Priest: Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself;
and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you,
in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our
human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God
and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered
himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus
Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and
gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given
for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he
gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the
new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of
sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
All: Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
Priest: We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of
praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension,
we offer you these gifts.
Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood
of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him.
Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and
serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with
all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.
All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and
in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty
Father, now and forever. AMEN.
11
The Lord’s Prayer
Priest: And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
All: Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
The Breaking of the Bread
Fraction Anthem: Lamb of God Melissa Dunphy (b. 1980)
12
Priest: The Gifts of God for the People of God.
Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you,
and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
Administration of the Sacrament sit
While we celebrate the Eucharist with both bread and wine, currently we receive in bread
only, which is full participation. Please tell the clergy if you require gluten-free bread.
To receive without physical contact, place one hand on top of the other, palms open.
Crossing your arms over your chest will let the clergy know
you would like to receive a blessing but not the sacrament.
If you are worshipping virtually and unable to physically partake of the sacrament,
we invite you to make your spiritual communion by praying the following prayer,
adapted from the prayer of St. Alphonsus de Liguori:
Beloved Jesus,
We believe that you are truly present in the sacrament of the altar.
We long for you in our souls,
to know that we are in you and that you are in us.
Though physically isolated from your altar
and the sacrament of your Body and Blood,
We receive you into our hearts and the depths of our being.
United with you, help us know that our lives are hid
with you, O Christ, in the heart of God. Amen.
Anthem William Mathias (1934–1992)
Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors;
and the King of glory shall come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.
Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors;
and the King of glory shall come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.
– Psalm 24: 7–10

Prayer of Thanksgiving
Priest: Let us pray.
All: Eternal God, heavenly Father,
you have graciously accepted us as living members
of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ,
and you have fed us with spiritual food
in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood.
Send us now into the world in peace,
and grant us strength and courage
to love and serve you
with gladness and singleness of heart;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Blessing
Priest: May God give you grace to follow the saints in faith and hope and love; and
the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be
among you, and remain with you always. Amen.
Hymn 623: “O what their joy and their glory must be” O quanta qualia
The Dismissal

MUSIC NOTES Edgar Bainton (1880–1956) was a student of Charles Villiers Stanford at the
Royal College of Music. Bainton was not a prolific composer, and he is best remembered
today for his anthem “And I saw a new heaven.”
The anthem “Lift up your heads, O ye gates,” Opus 44, No. 2, by Welsh composer
William Mathias (1934–1992) is sung at Communion. This anthem was composed in 1969 for
inclusion in Oxford University Press’s anthology Anthems for Choirs 1, a staple of many
Anglican choirs. Roderic Dunnett notes that this anthem is “perky, confident, wickedly
militaristic and full of Welsh dragons.”
The unique voice of French composer Jehan Alain (1911–1940) was cut tragically
short when he was killed in action in World War II. Perhaps his best-known organ work,
Litanies, JA 100 expresses a particular kind of prayer that Alain described as “passionate
incantation” rising to the throne of heaven. The composer challenges the performer: “If
you get to the end without feeling exhausted you have neither understood [Litanies] nor
played it as I would want it.”
