A study permit is an official document fromImmigration, Refugees, and CitizenshipCanada (IRCC) that allows you to study inCanada. Students should review their studypermit carefully, know the permit expiry date, and know the conditions they need to meetas study permit holders in Canada.

Your study permit is not a visa. It doesn’tlet you enter Canada. You may also need atemporary resident visa (visitor visa) or anelectronic travel authorization (eTA)depending on your country of citizenship. Ifthe IRCC approves your study permit, theywill issue a visa to you with your studypermit.

Electronic Travel Authorization

An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) isan entry requirement for visa-exempt foreignnationals traveling to Canada by

air. An eTA is electronically linked to atraveler’s passport. This is why it’simportant that you travel with the passportyou used when you applied for your studypermit. It is valid for up to five years or untilthe passport expires, whichever comesfirst. If you get a new passport, you need toget a new eTA.

Temporary Resident Visa (Visitor Visa)

If you’re from a country where you need atemporary resident visa, it will be placed bein your passport after your study permitapplication is approved. It’ll show if you canenter Canada once or multiple times. Youmust enter Canada before your visaexpires.

Letter of Invitation

After your study permit application isapproved, IRCC provides applicants with aport of entry letter of introduction that saysyou're allowed to study in Canada. Thisletter is not your study permit. This letterhas your permit reference number, whichthe IRCC uses to issue your study permit. This must be presented to a CBSAofficer when arriving at a port of entry toreceive your study permit.
