After he graduated from high school, Tyson took classes at a community college. He planned

on becoming an English major at a college or university but postponed his studies after he

landed a good job in construction, got married and started a family.

“I spent a lot of time waiting for a better time to come, when it would be more ‘convenient’ to

go back to school. But eventually I realized that things only become busier in your career and

with your children. I’m really glad I went back when I did,” reflects Tyson.

When Tyson enrolled in Albright’s DCP program (Degree Completion Program), his plans and

priorities had shifted from his initial focus on the liberal arts. An established project manager

at a successful concrete products company, he was looking for a degree that would have

practical applications in his profession coupled with a broad business base. He also wanted to

devote enough time to his wife and young daughter.

“My wife is in graduate school and I work a lot, so time

was really the issue. I looked at all of the online

programs but I really wanted to experience the classroom

environment. That was the major selling point for me,”

emphasizes Tyson.

With a number of convenient locations in Pennsylvania

(one of which was close to Tyson’s house) and a straight

forward, classroom-based program scheduled for one

night a week over the course of two years, Tyson found what he was looking for in DCP’s

program for business administration.

“Everything we studied from management techniques to strategy and planning helped me learn

new techniques for my job.” Many classes and textbooks later, not to mention lunchtime and

weekend study sessions, Tyson is on track to graduate with a GPA of 3.93. “The program has

enhanced everything I do,” smiles Tyson.

ON ALBRIGHT’S CENTER FOR EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AND RESEARCH:

“When I first met with the advisor at Albright, I was encouraged to put together

a portfolio. This was a great opportunity for me, because I felt I had undergone

relevant business training—everything from LEED certification to workplace ethics—

and I liked the idea that I could get credit for things I’d accomplished outside

of class work.

My advice topeople is not to put it off. It’ll be easierthe sooner you do it.

Once upon a time, Tracy thought her time had passed. Though she had attended college after

high school, she hadn’t finished. And she noticed that the people who were promoted within

her company all had their college degrees.

When Tracy found out about the organizational behavior / applied psychology program at Albright,

it struck a chord. For one, she thought it sounded like the perfect combination of psychology and

management. But more than that, the program offered her a realistic path toward reaching her

ultimate goal—to get her

bachelor’s degree so that

she could get promoted

within her own company.

After she enrolled, she noticed that the classes fed directly into how she approached and solved

problems in her job. “I gained so much insight—how to deal with people, how to motivate

people, how to advance them to the next level. I actually took some of the things I learned in

‘Management Concepts’ and trained the supervisors in my department with it!”

Though skeptical about DCP’s cohort-based program, where she would work with the same

group of individuals through the entire program, after two courses, she was hooked.

“We connected completely and built such a great support system for one another. Albright is

definitely a place where you are supported and it makes a difference. With that kind of structure,

you can reach your academic dreams.”

In terms of Tracy’s dreams, her employer just chose her out of 1,500 people to attend a

leadership program designed for the next leaders of the company. Oh, and after attending

Albright, she added another goal to her list... going back to school to get a master’s degree.

college credits), Albright will help you find the program that is right for you.

Erica went to college straight out of high school, but she left after two years. “I wasn’t disciplined

yet,” she remembers. After that, she landed a job in retail, but she still felt unsatisfied. “I learned

that I did not want to work retail!” Erica laughs. She talked to her father, who had been in the

Air Force for many years and soon decided to follow in his footsteps. During her time in the

service, she was able to take many courses in avionics instruments. She always planned to go

back to school and finish her bachelor’s degree.

It was many years later that Erica, a mother of six, registered for college again. Her oldest child

had just graduated from college and her second oldest (who had just recovered from cancer)

was about to return to college. Erica was

determined to get a bachelor’s degree and

follow her passion for lifelong learning.

“There are a lot of people who say, ‘I don’t

have the time.’ But I say this is about keeping

yourself and your mind sharp, ‘you can’t

afford to NOT do something.’”

After she enrolled in the information systems program, Erica learned how much taking classes

and moving towards her degree would also improve her experience on the job. “I went to work

and watched what I was being taught unfold before my eyes,” says Erica. One such class,

“Structural Analysis and Logical Design,” came in handy when her employer moved all of their

systems from one service provider to another. “Having that knowledge gave me patience during

the switch and an understanding of the issues that came about,” Erica recalls.

The program also showed Erica just how much she could accomplish. “Not only has my degree

moved me into a different career, I achieved a life long goal ahead of schedule.”

ON DCP’S COHORT SYSTEM: “Albright’s greatest gift was the support system

built into my classroom experience. Even when I couldn’t make it to class because

of work, the instructors and others in my cohort made sure I wouldn’t miss

anything. There was a real sense of camaraderie.”

My job directly benefits from my being inthe program.

programs in the United States and Canada. It also meets the recommendation of the

Association for Computing Machinery, which sets a variety of standards in technology fields,
