Alaskas New ELA & Math Standards

How did we get here?History of Standards in Alaska1990s: Alaska standards in reading, writing, and mathematics were developed by age spans

2004: Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) in reading, writing, and mathematics were developed to further define standards at each grade level (grades 3 10)

2006: Grade Level Expectations were expanded to include kindergarten through second grade7You will note the last time the state reviewed or revised the standards was in 2004 producing the Grade Level Expectations also known as GLEs. The GLEs did not change the content standards but further define them. Later in 2006 Kindergarten grade 2 GLEs were developed.

The new standards will completely replace the K-10 reading, writing, and mathematics GLEs and Content Standards and include grades 11 and 12.

13As recently as February through March 2011 , Alaska educators compared the GLEs to other state and national standards. They determined it was clearly a time for revision for the five reasons outlined on this slide: GLEs are over 6 years old, do not extend beyond grade 10, broad, lower in rigor than other states, and a blueprint for assessment.
