The months of Muharram and Safar offer the yearly opportunity to commemorate the martyrdom of al‑Husayn ibn `Ali (A), the grandson of the Prophet (S) and the third Imam of the Shiite Muslims, at Karbala' on the tenth of Muharram in the year 61. The tragedy and heroism of the event, the resistance and self‑sacrifice of the martyrs, are remembered during these days by the Shi`ah and the Ahl al‑Sunnah alike, and by the Shi`ah with a special ardour, fervour and enthusiasm. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the ardour and enthusiasm inspired by the martyrs of Karbala' is something unsurpassed in the history of religions. No individual or group in the history of the world has attracted such sustained admiration and love in the hearts of their followers as the martyrs of Karbala' and in particular the figure of al‑Husayn ibn `Ali (A), an admiration which has not dwindled in the course of more than thirteen and a half centuries that have elapsed since that event. Significance of the Month for Shi’ah Muslims Mourning ceremonies are held by Muslims throughout Muharram and Safar, and in gatherings which are called `majalis' (sing. majlis) elegies are recited and sermons are delivered from the minbar, the Islamic pulpit, in which the sufferings undergone by al‑Imam al‑Husayn, the members of his household and his companions are narrated. For the Shi'ah sect, the majlis and the sermons delivered therein are the primary source of religious education for the children, the illiterate and even educated adults. However, with the general decline and deterioration in the Muslim Ummah, of which the Shi'ah community is a part, the great educative potential of the majlis has slowly eroded, to the extent that not only the great educative purpose that lies behind mourning for al-Imam al‑Husayn has been forgotten, the majalis has become a platform for intensification of sectarian animosities and propagation of misconceived beliefs that conflict with the spirit of the Islamic faith. With the general decline of the Islamic culture there has been a parallel deterioration in the educative level of the sermons that are delivered from the minbar. The spreading ignorance and inertia of the majlis audience has laid diminishing demands on the learning and capacity of the religious speaker, called `dhakir' in India and Pakistan and rawdeh khan in Iran and Iraq. The lamentable ignorance of the masses and the deplorable negligence or absence of the sense of duty on the part of many dhakirs have converted most majalis into mere sources of nourishment of sectarian conceits and delusions. Shi'ism, which implies a voluntary and aware choice to shoulder greater responsibility as member of the Ummah and devoted obedience to the wajib al‑'ita'ah (i.e. those whose obedience is obligatory) Imams of the Household of the Prophet (A), its meaning has gradually degenerated into a mere emotional attachment for the Ahl al‑Bayt (A), devoid of any sense of ethical or social responsibility for the present‑day condition of Islam and Muslims. We, the self‑declared Shi'ah of al‑Husayn ibn `Ali (A), should pause and meditate at the answer given by him to a man who proclaimed to the Imam, "O son of the Prophet, I am one of your Shi'ah." Al‑Husayn ibn `Ali (A) said to him: Fear God, and do not make such a claim that God, the Almighty, should say to you, "You lied insolently by making this claim." Indeed our Shi'ah is one whose heart is free from every kind of deception, adulteration, hatred, malice, and corruption. If you are not such then say, "I am one of your admirers and supporters." The Responsibility of the Dhakir The Qur'an repeatedly calls its audience to meditate about its verses and to draw instruction from them, What, do they not meditate in the Quran? .... (4:82) What do they not meditate in the Quran? Or is it that there are locks upon their hearts? (47:24) A Book We have sent down to thee, blessed, that men of understanding may ponder its verses and so remember. (38:29) Whereas the Holy Book calls the believers to emulate the Prophet (S) as the sublimest model of human hood, You have a good example in God's Messenger for whosoever hopes for God and the Last Day, and remembers God oft. (33:21) the dhakir struggles to project the Prophet (S) and the Imams (A) as supernatural beings to be admired and extolled, not to be imitated and obeyed. He strives to drive home the point that the Qur'an is understandable only for God or the Holy Prophet (S) or the Imams (A), a book of sacred and abstruse meanings opaque to human understanding, a book so holy that it is impertinent even to try to understand it. The Duty of Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil The Qur'an and hadith lay great emphasis on the duty of al‑'amr bil ma'ruf wa al‑nahy `an al‑munkar, and it is recognized as one of the most important duties of Muslims in general and the `ulama' in particular. Unfortunately this duty is discreetly shunned by the dhakir who is averse to disturb the complacence of his audience and to venture to guide them at the cost of his own popularity. The strategy of connivance, though full of perils in the Hereafter, yields immediate returns.

The strategy of reducing (seemingly, elevating) the wajib al‑ita'ah Imams of the Ahl al‑Bayt (A), obedience to whom is obligatory, into holy inimitable metaphysical figure‑heads to be admired and implored in supplications for worldly bene-fits, may serve to attract applausing crowds but does no service to the religion of God and does no justice to the great teachers of mankind, which the Ahl al‑Bayt (A) in fact were. In some cases the attitude goes further than mere connivance, where the dhikr tries to soothe and appease bad religious conscience by proving on his own authority that absence of obedience to the commands of the religion of the Ahl al‑Bayt (A) will not hurt the believer as long as he remains their passionate admirer, as if such a thing were possible. When such disastrous attitudes are consciously cultivated among the people, when the mourning assemblies‑which were originally instituted to propagate the message of al‑Imam al‑Husayn - are held without paying any attention to al‑'amr bil ma`ruf wa al‑nahy`an al‑munkar and to the sublime goals of al‑Imam al‑Husayn and the sacred purposes behind his re-sistance against the regime of Yazid, it is not strange that those goals should gradually lose their relevance in the Muslim society, and the ahkam should become unimportant for the Muslim masses.

With the advent of Muharram we are in the majalis season. The period of Azadari is magical. It cleanses you, renews your faith in religion and inspires you to greater levels. Utilize this time, start anew, put your best foot forward with the best of intentions. Allah has said “Take one step towards me, I will take ten steps towards you. Walk towards me, and I will run towards you.” Here is some basic stuff that can help you out. Try and put them into practice. When you come for Majlis, or whenever you host a Majlis, one’s Intention, should be for the sake of Imam Hussain (a.s.) and nothing else. - Do your best to stay in wuzu. This is highly recommended. Build the habit of wuzu this Muharram. - Dress appropriately, wear dark colours, refrain from bright ones. - Include Marhoomeen in the intention of Azadari. You can make a list of Marhoomeen and make intention once at the beginning of Muharram. - Have a separate handkerchief for tears shed on our third Imam. These tears are our weapons, our Shifa. - Carry a notebook to record important points. Writing them down helps you to remember them, you can always look at them later. You will gain a lot of knowledge and tips for your life from the lectures, store this vital information. - Help other Momineen to reach the center by offering transport both to the majalis and back from it. - Be aware that Azadari is the best and easiest way to obtain closeness to Allah swt - It is not necessary to greet by saying ‘salaam-un-alaykum’. While we are in mourning, try and subdue the vibrancy of your life in any way you can. This is a period of great sadness. Express the sadness, let it manifest itself in your body lan-guage, speech, clothes. - While attending any majalis anywhere, consider it as one’s own and have the same concern for all majlises. Help out wherever you can, be involved as much as possible. - Another way of expressing our sadness is to serve simple niyaz. Eat simple food, in the very least for the first ten days. You are not being asked to eat dry bread and dates, but let us try and avoid heavy rich foods, like biryani or haleem. Avoid meat for the first ten days, especially on Ashura. - Take your niyaz with intention of 'shifa' /cure - Take the niyaz in a way that does not inconvenience others but at the same time do not disregard/takabur as if you do not need it. - Cry without shame. Why are you sitting in the Majlis? You have come to cry at the tragedies that have befallen the Ahlulbayt. Cry, cry unreservedly, no matter what anyone sitting besides you says or feels or thinks. - Do not get up in the middle of the majalis - Do not sleep esp in the view of the reciter - The time immediately after the masaib is very important and we should pay attention to it by making duas and not divert our mind to leaving the premises etc. Take Care that the Community around the premises must not get inconvenienced either due to noise or car parking or waste disposal

Imam Sajjad was brought to Ibn Ziyad's court and made to stand before that tyrant. "Who are you?" He asked the Imam. The Imam replied: "I am Ali ibn Husayn". He said: "Did Allah not kill Ali ibn Husayn?" The Imam replied: "I had a broth-er whose name was also Ali and the people killed him ". (The Imam meant to tell Ibn Ziyad not to attribute sin to Allah and not to say something irrelevant, because it was the people and not Allah who killed Ali ibn Husayn in Karbala). Ibn Ziyad said: "It is not so. Allah killed him". In reply to this the Imam recited a verse of the Qur'an: Allah takes the souls when the time of their death comes, (Surah al-Zumar, 39:42) but He is not their killer. When Ibn Ziyad saw that the young ailing prisoner had given back replies time and again to what he said he got annoyed and said: "Do you still have courage to resist what I say?" Then he said to his men: "Take him away and chop off his head". On hearing this lady Zaynab got very much worried and disturbed. However, the only reply which the fourth Imam gave to Ibn Ziyad was this: "If you kill me with whom will you send these women?" Then he added: "After killing me you should send with them a pious Muslim, who should behave towards them according to the orders of Islam". The fourth Imam did not utter a sentence requesting Ibn Ziyad to spare his life. He only said: "When I am killed do not send with these sacred women a man, who is impious and a non-Muslim". In Syria also Imam Sajjad got some such opportunities and availed of them to the maximum possible extent. When Imam Sajjad was a captive in Damascus a man named Ibrahim bin Talha bin Ubaydullah Taymi came before him in the Bazaar and said tauntingly: "O Ali bin Husayn! Who was victorious in this battle?" He meant to say that the Ahlul Bayt suffered a crushing defeat and their enemies won a glorious victory. The Imam said to him in reply: "Now that the time for prayers is approaching you should pronounce Azan and Iqamah so that you may come to know and understand clearly as to who has been victorious". The Imam meant to tell him this: 'As you belong to the Taym tribe of Quraysh you are perhaps happy for some reasons that Bani Hashim had suffered defeat. However, so long as you are a Muslim it is necessary for you to pronounce in Azan as well as Iqamah: "I testify that Mu-hammad is the Prophet of Allah". We and not others are the descendants and heirs of Prophet Muhammad without mentioning whose name and invoking Divine blessings for him the prayers' of any Muslim are not acceptable. Hence, so long as Islam exists the honor and glory belonging to us, the descendants of Muhammad, will also remain established and confirmed'. The Imam uttered these brief but fascinating words in reply to one person and perhaps uttered it in a low tone, but these very words uttered in low tones continue to resound in history. At times it so happens that only one sentence becomes the cause of coming into existence of many important books, speeches and articles. At that time neither Ibrahim, nor Talha nor anyone else could assess the importance of these brief words and pay attention to its essence overlooking its form, but the Imam knew that even if he had come to Syria to utter only this brief sentence and to say nothing else during this journey, it would be sufficient to achieve the object he had in view, and those who could not make the requisite assessment at that time would shortly later applaud the plan chalked out by Imam Husayn and his companions and Ahlul Bayt. Imam Sajjad got another opportunity when the Ahlul Bayt were made to stand by the gate of the Masjid of Damascus, the place where the prisoners were usually kept. An old man, who was a Syrian, came there and said: "I thank Allah that He has killed and destroyed you and annihilated seditious people like you". Then he began abusing the Ahlul Bayt. The fourth Imam kept quiet and let him speak on till he became silent. In his reply, however, he did not say any improper thing nor complained to the old man of using abusive language. At that time the fourth Imam was ill and was also a travel-er and had experienced the hardships of the journey from Kufa to Damascus. He was also bereaved and afflicted. Furthermore, he had arrived in a city which was at that time the center of the enemy of Ahlul Bayt. The Syrian used abusive language, expressed pleasure and thanked Allah for what had happened. When all these causes of annoyance and fury are present who can keep calm and not lose temper or give a harsh reply? It is not pos-sible for a person to control himself in such circumstances, whoever he may be. However, the Imam behaved towards the old Syrian like a kind and sympathetic teacher, as if he had experienced nothing from him except kindness and respect and asked him mildly: "Have you read the Qur'an?" He replied "Yes, why not?" Thereupon the Imam said: "Have you not read the verse: Say, O Muhammad! I do not want from you any recompense for my preaching to you except that you should love my kin. (Surah al-Shura, 42:23) The man replied: "Yes, I have". The Imam said: "I swear by Allah that we are the kinsmen of the Holy Prophet". It may be said with certainty that this very question must have created a tumult in the mind of the man. Then he asked the man: "Have you not read this verse: People of the house, Allah wants to remove all kinds of uncleanliness from you and to purify you thoroughly." (Surah al-Ahzab, 33: 33) He replied: "Yes. I have". The Imam said: "We are the people of the Household whose infallibility has been testified by Allah".

The Syrian thereupon raised his hands in prayer and said thrice: "O Allah! I repent and am regretful for what I have done. O Lord! I am disgusted with those who are the enemies of the progeny of the Holy Prophet and who have killed them. I do not know how it so happened; I have read the Qur'an but did not pay attention to these verses".

The fourth Imam got another such opportunity in the court of Yazid when the Ahlul Bayt were brought before him for the first time. The Imam who had been chained during his journey from Kufa to Damascus said to Yazid: "O Yazid! I put you on oath, in the name of Allah, just to imagine how the Holy Prophet will feel if he sees us in this condition?"

These words proved to be very effective. All those who were present there, began to weep and Yazid ordered the fetters to be removed from the body of the fourth Imam. Another important thing was that the Imam addressed Yazid by name and did not call him, the Commander of the Faithful, as was customary.

It was thus recorded in history that the Ahlul Bayt did not call Yazid, the Commander of the Faithful, even when they were chained and made captives and did not recognize him to be the successor and caliph of the Holy Prophet. History of Islam bears witness to the fact that none of the Ahlul Bayt who had been made prisoners addressed Yazid except by his name.

The Night of ‘Ashura’ on the Land of Karbala’ Mothers are sitting with their children. Umm Laila is with ‘Ali Akbar, Umm Farwah is with Qasim, Bibi Zainab is with ‘Aun- Muhammad. What are these mothers of Karbala’ telling their beloved children? They are preparing them for Jihad. They are preparing them to sacrifice their lives. Preparing them to die! Why? Because they know Husayn is on the right path. The right path to save Islam! Let us send our salaams to those mothers of Karbala’ for sacrificing their most precious for Islam. ‘Abbas the Alamdar! Like every night, ‘Abbas was guarding the camp. Where was Husayn? Husayn had gathered all his friends and companions in his tent. “My friends, my companions, tonight is the last night. Tomorrow is the day of ‘Ashura’. Tomorrow is the day of Shahadat - martyrdom! None of us will be spared by Yazid's soldiers.” Imam Husayn continued: “My friends, my companions, you have suffered enough. There is still time to save your lives. Escape in the darkness of the night. I will have no objections. I will forgive you. Go, my friends! Go, my companions!” Imam Husayn blew the candles off. There was total darkness. Anyone could have escaped without being seen or embarrassed. After a while, Husayn lit the candles. How many ran away? One? Two? Five? Ten? No one! Why did they not run away to save their lives? Because, my fellow Husayni, they had recognised the truth. Because they knew Husayn was right. Because they knew Husayn was on the true path. Because they knew their sacrifice would save Islam. Husayn was lucky to be blessed with true friends and best companions, - faithful, truthful and pious! Our greetings to those 72 martyrs of Karbala’ for their great sacrifice for Islam. Imam Husayn made the biggest sacrifice. In one day, he sacrificed his brothers, nephews and children on the land of Karbala’. He remained patient after seeing so many dead in one day. Did Husayn complain? No, never! On the contrary, after sacrificing his 18 year old son ‘Ali Akbar he looked up at the sky and said: “Ya Allah, give me more patience. Ya Allah, is there anything else I can give for Your sake?” Allah's will was Husayn's command. Husayn was prepared and willing to sacrifice his family. He never prayed to Allah to save his family. Instead he prayed for Patience! Patience! And more Patience! Allah! What a big Heart Husayn had in Karbala’! ‘Aun - Muhammad had been killed. Qasim was trodden to pieces. ‘Abbas was lying on the bank of River Furaat. ‘Ali Ak-bar's chest was torn open with a spear. Is there anymore to sacrifice? Tonight is the night of ‘Ali Asghar. The little Mujaheed - the little soldier and the youngest Shaheed. ‘Ashura’ came to the land of Karbala’. One-by-one, Husayn's friends and companions were martyred. ‘Aun - Muhammad, Qasim, ‘Abbas and ‘Ali Akbar went to the battlefield and were martyred. By Asr time Husayn was left alone. The time had come for Husayn to go to the battlefield. Husayn said Fi aman Allah to everyone. Husayn, with his sword Zulfikar on his waist, mounted Zuljiana, his horse. Husayn rode his horse to a small mount, he then called out loudly: “Is there anyone to help me? Is there anyone to help the grandson of the Holy Prophet?” With this call, the grandson of the Holy Prophet, was giving one last chance to Yazid's men, the men who called them-selves Muslims - the followers of the Holy Prophet. Hypocrites! That's what Yazid's men were.

No one answered Husayn's last call. But Husayn heard the sound of crying coming from his camp. Husayn turned around and returned to his tents. “Zainab, your brother is still alive. Why are you crying?” “My brother Husayn, when you called out, “Is there anyone to help me?”, ‘Ali Asghar fell from his cradle.” Husayn knew what ‘Ali Asghar was trying to say. Husayn went to Umm Rubab. ‘Ali Asghar was on her lap. He was crying and Umm Rubab was trying to comfort him. Husayn picked up baby ‘Ali Asghar and whispered in his ear. ‘Ali Asghar stopped crying. He looked up at his father and smiled. “Umm Rubab, I am taking ‘Ali Asghar to the battlefield with me so that I can get some water for him.” What did Husayn whisper in ‘Ali Asghar's ear? What made ‘Ali Asghar stop crying, and to smile? Husayn had whispered: “My son, ‘Ali Asghar, do you want to come to the battlefield with me? Asghar, do you want to show your strength on the battlefield? Come, let us go, my little Mujaheed, my little soldier, Asghar.” Umm Rubab changed ‘Ali Asghar's clothes. Imam Husayn carried ‘Ali Asghar to the battlefield. It was very hot. ‘Ali Asghar was thirsty. Husayn covered baby ‘Ali Asghar with his abaa, to protect him from the scorching sun. Yazid's men saw Husayn approaching with something in his hand. “Look, Husayn is coming with the Quran. He has no one left to help him. With the help of the Quran he is hoping to win.” Husayn walked to Yazid's soldiers. By moving his abaa he uncovered ‘Ali Asghar. He held ‘Ali Asghar high with both his hands and said: “O soldiers of Yazid, you feel I have offended you, but what has this little child done to you? His mother's milk has dried up. He has not had a drop of water for three days. He is dying of thirst. I beg you to give water to this innocent little child.” Not one of Yazid's soldiers brought any water for ‘Ali Asghar. Once more Imam Husayn begged: Maybe you think that when you bring water for this child, I will drink it too. I will put this little child on the ground. You can come and give him water yourself.” Husayn placed ‘Ali Asghar on the burning sand of Karbala’. ‘Ali Asghar lay quietly on the hot sand of Karbala’. His turned his head and stared at Yazid's men. No water came for ‘Ali Asghar. Husayn picked up ‘Ali Asghar and said: “My son ‘Ali Asghar, my darling, you are too young to fight with a sword or a spear. My little Mujaheed, my little soldier, you are a grandson of ‘Ali. ‘Ali Asghar, fight your Jihad with your tongue.” Little Asghar stuck his dry tongue out and moved it over his dry lips looking towards Yazid's men. He fought Jihad with his tongue. The little soldier shot a strange arrow - his dry tongue. It hit the hearts of Yazid's soldiers who had children of their own. They became restless. Some started crying. They spoke amongst themselves: “Husayn is saying the truth. What has this child done to us? Why is he punished like this? Let us give him some water.” Umar Saad got worried that his soldiers will turn against him. The little soldier's fight was very effective. Little ‘Ali Asghar was fighting Jihad his way. Umar Saad ordered his best archer: “Hurmullah! What are you waiting for? Silence the little child! Don't you know he is a grandson of ‘Ali? Hurry, shoot your arrow, before it is too late.” Hurmullah aimed an arrow at ‘Ali Asghar. A small arrow for a little child? No! An arrow not with one head, not with two heads, but with three sharp heads. Why? Why an arrow with three heads for such a small child? My fellow Husayni! You will not be able to stop crying when you hear what happened next. An arrow with three sharp heads flew across the desert of Karbala’. It was heading for ‘Ali Asghar. Husayn saw the arrow coming. He covered ‘Ali Asghar with his arms. The arrow reached Husayn. The arrow went through Husayn's arm and lodged in the tiny neck of ‘Ali Asghar. ‘Ali Asghar died instantly. Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar! Poor Husayn, the poor father, who came to get water for his little child. Instead of water, ‘Ali Asghar got an arrow in his neck. What shall Husayn do now? What shall Husayn do now? Husayn gently pulled the arrow from ‘Ali Asghar's tiny neck.

My fellow Hussaini, put your hand on your heart and imagine the scene - a father removing an arrow from his child's neck. What a tragic scene!

Blood gushed out from ‘Ali Asghar's neck.

A voice came from the ground:

“No, Husayn, do not let ‘Ali Asghar's blood fall to the ground, otherwise no crops will ever grow from this earth.” Husayn looked up at the sky.

A voice came from the sky:

“No Husayn, do not let the blood gush towards the sky, otherwise, no drop of rain will ever fall from this sky.”

What shall Husayn do now? What shall Husayn do now?

The sky is refusing, the earth is not happy to accept Asghar's blood.

Poor Husayn wiped ‘Ali Asghar's blood on his face.

Husayn started walking towards his tents.

He saw ‘Ali Asghar's mother - Umm Rubab - standing by his tent. A mother anxiously waiting for her baby.

Husayn thought:

“How can I face Umm Rubab? What shall I tell her? How can I tell her that her baby has been martyred without water? How? How?”

Seven times, Husayn went forward and then turned back,

Saying:

Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaih Raja’oon! We are from Allah and to Him we will return!

He finally reached the tent where Umm Rubab was standing. “Rubab, come and take your ‘Ali Asghar. Rubab, your little soldier has died for the sake of Allah.”

Umm Rubab took her little child, ‘Ali Asghar. She hugged him and cried her heart out.

“Come with me Rubab. Enough, Rubab, enough. Let us bury our baby Asghar”

Husayn and Umm Rubab walked to the back of the tents.

Husayn dug a small grave with his sword, the Zulfikar.

Umm Rubab placed ‘Ali Asghar in the small grave.

My fellow Husayni why should we not cry tonight? Why should we not do matam tonight?

Have we ever heard of any other father and mother digging a grave and burying their own child?

Where can Husayn get water to sprinkle on ‘Ali Asghar's grave? There is no water to sprinkle on ‘Ali Asghar's grave.

Husayn sat by the grave crying.

Tears poured on the grave. ‘Ali Asghar's grave was sprinkled with Husayn's tears.

Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaih Raja’oon!

Ali Akbar ibn Hussain (a) was born on 11th of Shabaan 44 AH and he was the son of Imam Hussain ibn Ali and Umm-e-Laila. He was a handsome young man of eighteen. He was also a brave soldier. He had been taught fencing and archery by his half-uncle, Abbas ibn Ali.

Ali Akbar ibn Hussain resembled the Holy Islamic Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) so much that Hussain ibn Ali was often heard saying that whenev-er I remember the Holy Islamic Prophet Mohammed I always look at Akbar.

Ali Akbar ibn Hussain (a) had a loud beautiful voice. It was he who al-ways recited Adhan. On the morning of the day of Ashura, Ali Akbar ibn Hussain (a) recited the Adhan. Every one knew that it was the last time they would hear Ali Akbar ibn Hussain's Adhan. Hussain ibn Ali began to weep when Ali Akbar began his Adhan. The ladies could also be heard crying in their tents.

After the morning prayers Ali Akbar stood in front of Hussain ibn Ali. He said, "Father I request for permission to go and fight the enemies of Islam." Hussain ibn Ali looked at his son lovingly. He said, "Akbar, you have my permission. May Allah be with you! But Akbar, you know how much your mother, sisters and aunts love you. Go and say farewell to them." Ali Akbar went into the tent of his mother. Every time he wanted to come out of the tent the mother, aunts and sisters would pull his cloak and say, "O Akbar, How can we live without you?" Finally Hussain ibn Ali had to go in and plead with all to let Ali Akbar go.

Hussain ibn Ali helped his youthful son to mount the horse. As Ali Akbar ibn Hussain began to the ride towards the battlefield, he heard foot steps behind. He looked back and saw his father. He said, "Father, we have said good-bye. Why are you walking behind me?" Hussain ibn Ali replied, "My son, had you been a father of a son like me, you would surely have understood!"

Ali Akbar fought very bravely. No one dared come close to him in single combat after he had killed many well known warriors. Umar ibn-e-Sa'ad ordered his soldiers to finish off the young man saying, "When he dies, Hussain will not want to live! Ali Akbar is the life of Hussain." While a few soldiers attacked Ali Akbar another (Haseen ibn-e-Nameer) slowly crept up to him and threw a spear at his chest with such ferocity that it penetrated his chest and he felt faint. As he was falling from his horse, he cried out. "O Father, my last salaam to you!" As he hit the ground the spear broke but the blade remained lodged in Akbar's chest.

When Hussain ibn Ali heard Akbar's salaam he looked at Euphrates, where Abbas ibn Ali’s body was laying and said, “Abbas! Now that this brother of yours needs you the most, where have you gone?" With all his strength sapped by the anguish in Akbar's voice, Hussain ibn Ali began to walk towards the battlefield.

If you guys didn’t read about the battle of Khaybar, then do so because it is related to this article is so many ways. The Jews of Khay-bar had revolted against the Holy Prophet Muhammad. The Prophet Muhammad and the Muslims of Medina laid a siege on Khaybar. They surrounded the fortress in which the Jews had taken shelter. The Muslims could not get victory unless they entered the fortress. There was a moat surrounding the fortress. Hazrat Ali had been unable to accompany the Muslims due to his illness. Three days passed and the Muslims could not find any solution. Even if they got across the moat they would face the famous gates of the fortress. These were made of steel, and it is said that at least twenty men were needed to push open or close each gate.

On the third day, after the morning prayers, the Islamic Prophet Muhammad summoned Ali ibn Abu Talib. Ali immediately respond-ed. He jumped his horse over the moat and with one hand swung open both the gates of the fortress with such force that they broke off their hinges. He carried them and put them across the moat to form a bridge. The Muslims rode into the fortress and conquered Khaybar.

Now let us go back to Karbala. When Hussain ibn Ali got to where Akbar lay he took him in his arms. Akbar had his right hand on the chest. He placed his left arm over the shoulder of his father. Hussain said "Akbar, why do you embrace me with one arm only?" Ak-bar would not reply. Hussain tried to move Akbar's hand. Akbar resisted. Hussain ibn Ali gently moved the hand. Then he saw it! He saw the blade of the spear. Hussain ibn Ali laid Ali Akbar ibn Hussain on the ground and sitting on his knees he put both his hands on the blade of the spear. He then looked at Najaf, and cried out, "Father, I too have come to my Khaybar!" He pulled out the blade. Angel Gabriel cried out "Marhaba! Marhaba!" Akbar took a deep sigh and then lay still.

Among so many lessons mentioned that we can learn, we’ve choosen only 14 for today, in the name of 14 infallibles a.s. 1. DON’T ACCEPT HUMILIATION : In one of his speeches, Imam Hussein a.s. said that the authorities in Kufa had giv-en him only two options - humiliation or death. He carried on to say, ‘And we do not accept humiliation’. A tradition re-ported by Imam Sadiq a.s records that, other than not accepting humiliation, Allah Almighty has given to believers a choice in all matters. 2. BROAD-MINDNESS : This means thinking independently and being just in one’s judgements. Not simply following others blindly and keeping one’s eyes closed. On the Day of Ashura Imam Hussein a.s. addressed Yazid’s troops: “O fol-lowers of Abu Sufyan, if you are not following the teachings of Islam then as freemen, be independent of judgement. On what basis do you fight me now?” 3. A WIDER UNDERSTANDING OF DEATH : Few people desire death. The Holy Qur’an challenges the Jews for not welcoming death in view of their alleged special relationship with Allah s.w.t. Imam Hussein a.s. extended our compre-hension of death by drawing attention to the three points below: a) Death is written for everyone and no soul may escape it. He said: “Death is an adornment of life as a necklace is an adornment of a beautiful woman.” b) Death with dignity is preferable to a life lived in humiliation. c) Dying for the cause of Islam is martyrdom and a great honour. In his farewell to relatives in Madina, Imam Hussein a.s. said: “Whoever joins us will be martyred, those who remain behind will miss the victory.” 4. AWARENESS : Desertion is discouraged via military courts martial and firing squads. A commander has never given troops permission to evade the battlefield before or after Imam Hussein a.s. The Imam himself would like them all to be aware of the consequences of the impending action before any accepted the challenge. 5. SUPPORT THE TRUTH : Imam Hussein a.s. announced: “Don’t y see that Truth has been replaced by falsehood. We must be prepared to sacrifice everything that is precious in support of Truth!” Truth is the ‘essence’ of Islam and fortifies the values emphasized in the Holy Qur’an. Hazrat Ali Akbar asked his father Imam Hussein a.s.:”Are we not supporting the Truth?”. Imam a.s. replied in the affirmative Hazrat Ali Akbar said: “then, it makes no difference if death comes to us or if we approach death.” 6. IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO REPENT : Hur Riahi, the first commander to surround Imam Hussein’s troops and pre-vent their access to the water of Euphrates, provides an excellent illustration of repentance. Regretting his action, he asked Imam Hussein a.s. if his repentance would be accepted. Imam Hussein a.s. told him that it is never too late to re-pent. Hur joined Imam Hussein’s camp and was honoured by being one of the first martyrs (Peace be upon Him). 7. FIDELITY AND LOYALTY : Fidelity is a characteristic admired by all. If friends meet in times of comfort and wealth but leave when hardship and difficulty strike, it is clear that their friendship is not true. On the day of Ashura, Imam Hus-sein a.s. told John, a servant of the renowned companion Hazrat Abu Dhar: “You have accompanied us all the way but now you may go.” John replied: “It is not fair that I benefit from your company and hospitality but abondon you in your hardship?” His attitude exemplifies fidelity, loyalty and true friendship. 8. LADIES PARTICIPATE : Without Lady Zainab’s participation in Karbala, the mission of Imam Hussein a.s. could not have been fulfilled. 9. TO PLEASE ALLAH : The objective of all believers should be the pleasure of Allah Almighty. Imam Hussein a.s. said in one of his speeches that the only objective of the Prophet’s household is to please Allah. Whenever he saw family members martyred he would utter “It’s bearable only because Allah is its witness.” 10. GIVING PREFERENCE TO THE NEEDS OF OTHERS : In Islamic terminology, giving preference to the needs of others is referred to as “Ithaar”. On the Day of Ashura, the actions of Hazrat Abbas, brother of Imam Hussein a.s. exempli-fy “Ithaar”! Hazrat Abbas a.s. battled bravely to gain access to the water of Euphrates. Although he gave no consideration to his own thirst but strove instead to bring water to the tents for the women and children. 11. PATIENCE IN ADVERSITY : Allah tells us in the Holy Qur’an that only those who remain patient will receive re-ward without measure. Imam Hussein a.s. brought up to understand the Quran that is why he was happy to ‘remain pa-tient’ in hardship and endurance and to await his Lords reward. His patience wasn’t out of weakness or helplessness but a demonstration of his steadfastness and bravery. Those who saw Imam Hussein a.s. on the Day of Ashura reported. ”We

have never seen a man remaining as composed as Imam Hussein a.s. whereas his relatives and children were slaughtered before his eyes.” 12. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF AMR BIL MAROUF : Imam Hussein a.s. declared in a speech that the only objective of seeking this reform is to emphasis the significance of ‘Amr bil Marouf and Nahy anil Munkar’. (Enjoining good and forbidding evil). 13. THE USE OF LAWFUL MEANS : Imam Hussein a.s. tried to stop Umar ibn Sa’d from pursuing his evil objectives. He said to him: “You are promised government over ‘Ray’ (Tehran today) yet you will never eat the wheat of that area.” Ibn Sa’d responded: “Its barley will suffice!!” Realizing that he couldn’t change Ibn Sa’d’s mind, Imam Hussein a.s. said: “Those who use unlawful means to achieve their objectives never attain them.” 14. CHASTITY AND HIJAB: After the tragedy of Ashura, women and children became prisoners of war and were taken first from Karbala to Kufa and then to Damascus. They were tortured on route and forced to walk behind the soldiers who carried the heads of Imam Hussein a.s. and his companions mounted on their spears. When they arrived at Yazid’s headquarter in Damascus, Imam Sajjad a.s. asked that the ‘heads’ be removed from the proximity of the women and children in order to protect them from spectators. “Glory be to your Lord, the Lord of Honour, beyond what they describe. And peace be upon the Apostles. And all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.”

Charles Dickens "If Husain fought to quench his worldly desires, then I do not understand why his sisters, wives and children accompanied him. It stands to reason therefore that he sacrificed purely for Islam." Dr. Rajendra Prasad The sacrifice of Imam Husain is not limited to one country, or nation, but it is the hereditary state of the brotherhood of all mankind. Dr. Radha Krishnan Though Imam Husain gave his life almost 1300 years ago, but his indestructible soul rules the hearts of people even today. Swami Shankaracharya It is Husain's sacrifice that that has kept Islam alive or else in this world there would be no one left to take Islam's name. Rabindranath Tagore In order to keep alive justice and truth, instead of an army or weapons, success can be achieved by sacrificing lives, exactly what Imam Husain did. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Imam Husain's sacrifice is for all groups and communities, an example of the path of rightousness. Mrs. Sarojini Naidu I congratulate Muslims that from among them, Husain, a great human being was born, who is reverted and honored totally by all communities. Reynold Alleyne Nicholson "Husayn fell, pierced by an arrow, and his brave followers were cut down beside him to the last man. Muhammadan tradition, which with rare exceptions is uniformly hostile to the Umayyad dynasty, regards Husayn as a martyr and Yazid as his murderer." Robert Durey Osborn "Hussain had a child named Abdallah, only a year old. He had accompanied his father in this terrible march. Touched by its cries, he took the infant in his arms and wept. At that instant, a shaft from the hostile ranks pierced the child's ear, and it expired in his father's arms. Hussain placed the little corpse upon the ground. 'We come from God, and we return to Him!' he cried; 'O Lord, give me strength to bear these misfortunes! ' . Faint with thirst, and exhausted with wounds, he fought with desperate courage, slaying several of his antagonists. At last he was cut down from behind; at the same instance a lance was thrust through his back and bore him to the ground; as the dealer of this last blow withdrew his weapon, the ill-fated son of Ali rolled over a corpse. The head was severed from the trunk; the trunk was trampled un-der the hoofs of the victors' horses; and the next morning the women and a surviving infant son were carried away to Koufa. The bodies of Hosain and his followers were left unburied on the spot where they fell. For three days they remained exposed to the sun and the night dews, the vultures and the prowling animals of the waste; but then the inhabitants of a neighbouring village, struck with horror that the body of a grandson of the Prophet should be thus shamefully aban-doned to the unclean beasts of the field, dared the anger of Obaidallah, and interred the body of the martyr and those of his heroic friends."

I take Refuge In Allah From The Stoned Satan. In Name Of Allah The Source Of Mercy To All Of Creation;

The Source Of The Mercy To The Believing Congregation. Oh Allah Bless Muhammad’s (Pbuh) Soul, And Rain Down Peace on His Household. “Why We Cry” Don’t think our cries are too extreme. There’s good reason for grown men to scream. Our actions aren’t of those insane, we weep in zikr (remembrance) of Hussein. When the guilty kills the innocent to usurp Islamic Government, Should not a Muslim cry in pain? Hussein! Hussein! Hussein! Hussein! Reflect on Hussein’s flawless fame. Reflect on Yazeed, steeped in shame. Shall not the heart be pierced by woe when the Khalif is Al-Islam’s foe? Oh what a dark, sad thought to bear, It breaks the heart, moves joy to tear. That’s why our tears fall down like rain. Hussein! Hussein! Hussein! Hussein! A heart of stone’s too hard to cry. A mind that’s closed won’t wonder why. A foolish man is deaf and blind. A coward always stays in line. But a soul that prostrates on its face. With trembling heart, seeking God’s Grace Won’t hide from Truth, can’t hide the pain. Hussein! Hussein! Hussein! Hussein! The Khalif chose vile tricks, and lies. Hussein chose death, not compromise. This Prophet’s son would not bow down; Preferring death to being bound to evil hind’s Satanic Son. So with his death The Imam won. Islam’s loss was Islam’s gain.

Are you confused which side is right? How would you stand if called to fight? Are you aware just who was slain. Hussein! Hussein! Hussein! Hussein! The leader of The Garden’s Youth was murdered by a drunk uncouth. Understand the scene my friend; An angel murdered by a jinn who held the Ummah’s reins. Hussein! Hussein! Hussein! Hussein! A Nimrod in Islamic Guise. Truth mixed with lies. An Ummah fooled by slight of hand. One raised his voice. One dared to stand. An Abraham who chose The Flames Rejecting falsehood kingly claims an Abel who opposed a Cain. Hussein! Hussein! Hus-sein! Hussein! How could a demon rise so high to cause the Prophet’s son to die; to kill him with the Muslim’s sword; And in The Name Of Prophet’s Lord? Can might make right, and rule God’s Deyn? Then how did things get so obscene? How will we ever clean the stain? Hussein! Hussein! Hussein! Hussein! They wouldn’t let Hussein’s men drink. And now they will not let you think. They barred them from a river clear. They bar you from a knowledge dear. The fence your mind with bigotry and tie your hands with apathy. Why should a Muslim not feel pain?

Hussein! Hussein! Hussein! Hussein! These Yazeeds kill for crown, and purse. At least Muslims can spit and curse, but many think the cost too high. So they obey the one’s who lie. They would not allow Husayn a drink. And now they won’t let Muslim’s think and those who think, they call insane. Hussein! Hussein! Hussein! Hussein! The world’s a Karballa, a desert dry; And Quran’s a river flowing by, And Ishtahad’s a water skin that’s cool and filled for thirsty men. Where is Abbas with what we need? His canteen was pierced with shafts of greed. Our thirst is not from lack of rain. Hussein! Hus-sein! Hussein! Hussein! Though martyrdom gave Abbas wings, Thirst remains and grief still stings. But tears alone won’t slake our thirst. Tears by themselves can make things worse. Who will stand? Who will try to speak The Truth ... To stand ... To die;

Beware! Surely this world is a place from which protection cannot be sought except while one is in it. The action which is performed only for this world cannot secure salvation. People are tested in it through calamities. Those who have taken worldly pleasures here will be taken out from them (by death) and will be questioned about them. And whatever (good actions) they have achieved for the oth-er world, they will get them there and stay in them. For the intelligent this world is like the shade - one moment it is spread out and extended but soon it shrinks and contracts.
