    INTRODUCTIONBACKGROUNDONTHEPROGRAMME

    TheBritishMuseumestablishedtheInternationalTrainingProgrammein2006.Theprogrammewasinitiatedtwoyearsprevious,asaresultofacontactfromtheSupremeCouncilforAntiquitiesofEgypt,nowtheMinistryofStateforAntiquities,whothensentsevencuratorsforsixweeksinLondon.Inthenineyearsthattheprogrammehasbeenrunning,therehavebeen183participantsfrom27countriesintheMiddleEast,Africa,southandeastAsiaandLatinAmerica.Recruitmentisthroughgovernmentbodies,individualmuseumsandacademicbodies,orsometimesfromothercollaborativeprogrammes.In2006theprogrammewasfundedbytheBritishMuseum,and,from2007todate,hasbeenfundedexternallythroughdonationsandsponsorship.

    Therearethreeelementstothemainprogramme:atrainingprogrammeattheBMwhichincludespresentations,workshopsandvisits;aplacementinaBMdepartmentbasedonparticipants’specificareaofinterest;andatendayplacementatapartnermuseum.Thepartnermuseumsare:

    § GlasgowMuseums

    § Lincoln:TheCollection

    § ManchesterMuseumandArtGallery

    § Tyne&WearArchives&Museums.

    § AshmoleanMuseum-Oxford.

    In2015theMarie-LouisevonMotesiczkyCharitableTrustpledgedachallengefundtosupportthecontinueddevelopmentanddeliveryoftheITP.ThegiftwasmadeinhonourofthedirectorshipofNeilMacGregor(2002–2015)andrecognisedthetenthanniversaryofprogramme.ThroughadditionalsuccessfulappealstotheBritishMuseumMembersandPatrons,andwithgiftsfromtheAmericanFriendsoftheBritishMuseum,aswellaslegaciesandrenewedgrantsfromtrustsandfoundations,theITPhasbeenabletodevelopfurtherpost-fellowshipopportunitiesforitsglobalnetwork.Theextendedprogrammethatincludes:

    § ITP+shortcourses.

    § ITPcollaborativeawards.

    § TemporarydisplaysattheBritishMuseum.

    § Researchfellowships.

    fromthem.ThebondthatIdevelopedwithotherparticipants,colleaguesatBritishMuseum,andManchesterMuseumshasbeenveryenrichingandIlookforwardtobuildinguponthisrelationshipinfuture.ITPaffordsustheopportunitytoconstantlylearnfromeachotherandwidenourhorizon.ITPisquitemeaningfultomesinceit’smyfirsttimetostaywithagroupofforeignfriendsinaforeigncountryfor6weeks.6weeksisquitealongperiodforanewmom.However,duetoITP’sintensearrangementandallthelovelyparticipants,Ididn’tsufferalotbecauseIdidn’thavetimetofeelsosorrowfuloreveryeveningIhaddinnerwithmyadorablefriendsandchattedwitheachotheronfood,culture,religion,society,families,etc.Withinus,nothingseemedtobesensitive.Wewerefreetoshareourideasandmakecomments.ItwasthefirsttimethatIsawmybeautifulEgyptianfriendswithoutscarf.ItwasmyfirsttimethatItouchedmySouthAfricanfriends’braid.ItwasthefirsttimethatmyGreekfrienddidamake-upformeforexhibitionshowsandfarewelldinner.Somanyfirsttimes.Allofthesecontributedtobetterunderstandingofeachother.Wearedifferent,butweindeedrespectandvalueeachother.ThankstoITP.Ihaveverystrongfeelingsandthoughtsaboutthisamazingprogramme.WhileIwasthere,Iwasverybusytounderstandthemeaningandtheinfluenseofthisexperienceintomylife.NotjusttheprogrammeitselfbutalsoBM'speopleandwonderfulparticipantsfrom12differentcountriesarealsoresponsibleforthat.Imadesomeverygoodfriendsandalltogether,wesharedourpersonalandprofessionalexperienceswithnofeelingofconsience.Myprofessionalexperiencesandmypositivewayofthinkingandacting,iswhatIhopetobroughtwithmeinthisprogramme.Thanku!!ThehighlightoftheITPwastheenergyofthegroup.Thiswasprobablybecauseoftheperfectorganizationandthewarmfriendship.Eventsandattractionswerebeautiful.Friendsfromdifferentcountriesandcultureweremixedandtogetheragreedonleastcommontohaveafruitfultraining.TheITPexperienceintheBritishMuseumwasformeaonce-in-a-lifetimeexperience.Asresearcherintothehistoryofarchitecture,Ialwayswonderandendeavourtofindoutwhatmytopicmightbemovingtowards–Iaminterestedinthefutureoftheresearchandseeinthetransformationofscholarlyinvestigationintoexhibitionthefinestwayinwhichtofulfilmyobjectives.Scholarlyresearchisasearchfortruthandbeautyinthepastthathelpsusunderstandandtolivethepresentbetter,toplanforabetterfuture.Sharingtheresultsofresearchwiththeacademiccommunityisexceptionallyvaluableandworthwhile,buttosucceedintherightwayinpresentingresearchtothewideraudienceforculturalmattersisacomplexmatterandastillgreaterchallenge.TheexperienceintheBritishMuseum,inwhichIhadtheopportunitytobecomeacquaintedwitheveryphaseofthiscomplexprocessofthetransformationofscholarlyresearchintoexhibition,includingconversationandinterpretation,legalandeconomicissues,designanddialoguewiththeaudience,theeducationalroleofanexhibitionandmanyotherphasesaffordedmeafoundationforbeingabletodevotemyselftoparticipationinthissplendidmission.Iwasparticularlygladaboutandgratefulfortheabilitytoworksocloselytogetherwithinternationalexpertsdedicatedtothehistoricalheritage,forIbelievethatconnectednessviathehistoryofartandculture,viajointexhibitionsandprojectsisawayinwhichtheworldcanbeintertwinedwiththefinestofalllinks.ThehighlightofmystaywasworkintheGreekandRomanDepartment,understandingtheimportanceoftheinterpretationofresearchandthepossibilityofinternationalcollaborationand,aboveall,thesenseofbelongingtoafamilyofscholarsdedicatedtotheculturalheritageanditspresentation.Besidethattheprogramwasusefultome,itforcedmetofacemyfears,timeandagain.IalwaysgetnervousandscaredofpresentingbutITPhadforcedmetodothisonregularterms.IlikedthatIbecamemoreconfidentasthetimegoes.

    the3,043stainlesssteeland250glasspanelsthatmakeupitsuniquecurvedroof.StandingtallandadmirethespectacularviewsacrossNewcastleGatesheadQuaysideandbeyond–seeingthefamousbridgeslikeneverbefore.InNewcastle,youcanfigureouttheBritain’surbanheritagethatisoneofthemainsymbolsofhumanevolutionthroughhistorythatreflectsthecapacityofmantoovercomesurroundingenvironment;asitislistedin(WASHINGTONCHARTER1987.Allurbancommunities,whethertheyhavedevelopedgraduallyovertimeorhavebeencreateddeliberately,areanexpressionofthediversityofsocietiesthroughouthistory.Theseareasembodythevaluesoftraditionalurbancultures.

    Quiteeasily,thebestpartoftheITPwasourinteractionwithourfellowparticipants.Throughourconversationswitheachotherandinsightsthatwegainedthroughsessionslike'CulturalHeritageandPeaceBuilding',theonethingthatstruckmewashowprivilegedweareinIndia.Security,resources,thefreedomtoexpressourselves,allthingsthatwetakeforgrantedarenotsoformanyothers.Itledtoadeepintrospectionabouthoweffectivelyweareactuallyusingwhatisavailabletousandhowmuchmorewecandoifweapplyourselves.Thediversityoftheparticipantsalsoprovedtoenhanceourlearning.Notjustthroughourinteractionbutalsoquestionsthattheparticipantswouldaskduringsessions.Theywerethingsthatwewouldn'thavethoughtofgivenourdifferentbackgroundsandlisteningtotheconversationsduringthesesessionswasquiteinformativeandthoughprovoking.MeetingpeoplefromIndia,Yemen,China,Turkey,Croatia,Greece,Egypt,Sudan,SouthAfrica,Britain,Scotland,Malaysia,Lebanon,andmoreisgreat.IlovethatIgotthisopportunity,andthediversityofthegroupwasjustgreat.Ilearnedthatmanymuseumsgloballyfacethesameissues,andevensawhowsimilarweallare,yetdifferent.IthinkthebestformeistohavechancetoseemanydifferentmuseumintheUK,soIcanknowhowtheywork.Nomatterwhereweare,wejustneeddosomethingfirstimportant,haveanicetimeandkeephealth.

    kidswell,theBMGthemainmuseuminthecitythereisasectionoftheBirminghamanditspeopleHistorythisideaisgodtomemaywereflectingtoourinstitutionanddiscusswithourboard.IlearnedsomanyideasthatcouldbeappliedinEgyptsuchasencouragingpeopleinEgypttodonatetothemuseumbyapplyingthebatterflywallforthemandIthinkthisideacouldbeappliedeasilywhereeverydetonatorcouldwritehisnameinabutterflyattheentranceoftheEgyptianMuseum,Museum'sBoxesofdelightisverygoodideatoengagetheschoolstothemuseumandIhavemanyReplicasintheChildrenMuseumIcouldBeginwithoneBoxandgotoschools.oneofgoodideasIhaveeverseenwastoengagecommunitybypresentingtheiropinioninthecurrentculturallandscapeandhowtheycloudshapeitinthefuturebypresentingactivitycalledshapeyourculturallandscapeandanalyzingtheiropinionsconcerningtheimportanceofmuseuminprotectingandpresentingtheculturallandscape.amongtheprogramsofcommunityengagementintheUKpartnermuseumwasengagingpeoplewhojusthaverecoveredfromaddiction,itisnoteasytotargetthosepeopleinEgyptbutIwilltrytocontactoneoftheEgyptianhealthorganizationsthatdealingwithsuchcasesandpresentlecturesforthemattheEgyptianmuseum.atthechildrenmuseummyinstitutionIwillapplytheideaoffamilytablewithmanyeducationalresourcestoengagemorefamiliestotheChildrenmuseum,dressasromanisaniceactivityIexperiencedintheUKpartnermuseumthataimtoengagethechildrenandcouldbyappliedatthechildrenmuseumwithdifferentnamelikedressaspharaohs.concerningbarriers,theyaretwomainbarriers,thefirstoneisgettingtheapprovaltoapplytheseactivitiesandthesecondoneisthesupportedmaterialsneededfortheseactivities,ithinkicouldabletoapplysomeoftheseideasaftergettingtheapprovaloftheheadofmuseumsectorinEgypt.TheimportantthingtheyareverysmallstaffbuttheorganizingtheirworkverywellandofcoursetheyhavewonderfulprograminmuseumeducationandlearningCollectionmanagementandexhibitionpracticesCommunityinvolvementprojectsareattheforefrontandthatIfoundtobeimpressive.Iwilldefinitelyapplyallthethingslearnedandkeepintouchforadviseonfutureprojects.Theonlybarrierwouldbenotgettingsufficientfundingbutalotofprogrammescanstillbedeliveredwiththeresourcesmyinstitutioncurrentlyhave.Iwillmostdefinitelyencourageothercolleaguestosourceoutsponsorsfortheirprojectsandnotrelyentirelyonthemuseum'sfunding.Iwanttoopenmoreobjectstothepublic,andiwanttoencouragemorepeopletothemuseum.Butfirstweneedtoeducatepeopleunderstandmoreaboutmuseumandthehistory.
