‘ITALIA’ HOPES TO TAKE HOME THE CROWN Godolphin Racing’s Sentiero Italia (Medaglia d’Oro) looks to
secure her third straight victory and first at the highest level in
Keeneland’s GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. Saturday.
Earning her diploma at second asking when stretched to this
1 1/8-mile distance over the lawn at Aqueduct Apr. 19, the
Kiaran McLaughlin pupil
captured a grassy Belmont
allowance May 28 and
was fourth behind the
undefeated Lady Eli
(Divine Park) after a wide
trip in the GI Belmont
Oaks Invitational S. July 4.
With Joel Rosario stepping
in for Luis Saez, the bay
scored back-to-back victories in Saratoga’s GII Lake Placid S. and
Belmont’s GII Sands Point S. Sept. 12. Sentiero Italia gets the
morning-line nod at 6-5 despite drawing the outside post in this
nine-horse affair. (Click here for an interview with Darley’s
Jimmy Bell). Cont. p3
BIG GUNS BREEZE TOWARDS CLASSIC Two-time Eclipse Award winner Beholder (Henny Hughes) and
Triple Crown champion American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile)
breezed five furlongs minutes apart Friday morning at Santa
Anita as each remains on course for the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic
at Keeneland Oct. 31.
Just after the 6:30 renovation break, Beholder jogged off from
the chute at the top of the Santa Anita stretch and began her
work at the half-mile
marker. With regular
exercise rider Janeen
Painter in the irons, the
5-year-old mare
completed her workout a
furlong past the wire and
was given a rare ‘breezing’
designation for the move,
which was accomplished
in an official time of 1:02 flat. Though the drill was faster than
just six other horses at the distance (33/39), trainer Richard
Mandella expressed his unconditional satisfaction. Cont. p5
MINDING IN LEAGUE OF HER OWN Hot property after inflicting defeat on Sunday’s G1 Prix Marcel
Boussac-winning Ballydoyle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the
G1 Moyglare Stud S. over seven furlongs at The Curragh
Sept. 13, Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) stepped up again to
demolish some smart
opposition in this
intriguing renewal and
place herself at the top
of the pecking order
for Europe’s
2-year-old fillies.
Second on debut to
the well-regarded
Tanaza (Ire) (Dubawi
{Ire}) over seven at
Leopardstown June 11,
the bay had showed an abundance of pace to break her maiden
by 5 1/2 lengths dropped a furlong returning to that venue a
fortnight later before taking time out. Two-lengths second to
Ballydoyle on her comeback in the G2 Debutante S. over seven
furlongs at The Curragh Aug. 22 before reversing that form in a
strong edition of the Moyglare, she provided a masterclass on
this first overseas foray to suggest she will take all the beating in
the mile Classic back here in the spring. Cont. p8

Jack Hobbs Gearing Up
G1 Irish Derby winner Jack Hobbs (GB) (Halling) delighted connections in a racecoursegallop on Newmarket's Rowley Mile Friday before racing. Partnered by William Buick, JackHobbs came right away from his work companion Dick Doughtywylie (GB) (Oasis Dream{GB}) to put himself firmly on course for the G1 Champion S. at Ascot in a week's time.

A Pennsylvania horse owner, who formerly worked as the groom for 2004 GI KentuckyDerby and GI Preakness S. winner Smarty Jones, has had stabling privileges revoked byParx racing officials after an injured gelding he owned had to be euthanized after beingdiscovered at an equine auction where horses are commonly sold for meat. Sam Elliott, theParx director of racing, confirmed the ban. T. D. Thornton has our report.

Also exiting the Sands Point are runner-up Blond Me (Ire)
(Tamayuz {GB}) and third-place finisher Miss Temple City
(Temple City). Blond Me broke her maiden at third asking in a
one-mile test at Salisbury June 14 and captured Sandown’s Coral
Distaff next out July 4. A neck second in her final European start
in Sandown’s G3 Atalanta S. Aug. 22, the Andrew Balding trainee
displayed an impressive late turn of foot to take second in her
American debut in the Sands Point. Opening her account with a
pair of victories last
term at Laurel Oct. 10
and Gulfstream
Dec. 17, Miss Temple
City finished third in
the GIII Sweetest
Chant S. in Hallandale
Jan. 24 and second to
Lady Eli in the GIII
Appalachian S. over
this course Apr. 12.
Capturing Pimlico’s Hilltop S. next out May 15, the Sagamore
Farm, Allen Rosenblum and The Club Racing runner took a trip
across the pond, where she finished a respectable fourth in
Royal Ascot’s G1 Coronation S. June 19. The dark bay was
second in the Lake Placid prior to her third in the Sands Point
last out, and trainer Graham Motion gives her Lasix for the first
time here.
Conditioner Jim Cassidy ships Prize Exhibit (GB) (Showcasing

and was runner-up against her elders in that venue’s GII Yellow
Ribbon H. last time Sept. 6. She fired a three-panel bullet in
:36 1/5 in her last work in Arcadia Oct. 2.
Ike and Dawn Thrash’s Her Emmynency (Successful Appeal)
enters off a second-place finish in the Del Mar Oaks for trainer
Mike Stidham. Kicking off this term with an optional claimer
victory in an off-the-turfer at Arlington June 20, the bay was
sixth in the San Clemente prior to her runner-up effort last out.
The red-hot Florent Geroux, who was aboard for her last success
at Arlington, gets back in the irons for this one. Cont. p4

"I think he's doing very, very well," said McGaughey. "I was
very pleased with his allowance win [at Belmont] before we
went to Saratoga. He had a little bit of a rough trip in Canada,
then he came back and trained very well and ran well at Laurel
and the same kind of goes for here. He's run good over this turf
course more than once and even though it's a deep field I'm
looking forward to running him. "
Diamond M Stable’s War Dancer (War Front) missed by a just

next out June 6. Runner-up in the Spa’s GII Bowling Green H.
Aug. 1, the Bill Mott trainee was a well beaten fourth last time
behind a dazzling performance from Flintshire (GB) (Dansili
{GB}) in the GI Sword Dancer S. upstate Aug. 29.
Mr. and Mrs. Betram Firestone’s Middleburg (Lemon Drop Kid)
hopes to make it two in a row here for trainer Christophe
Clement. Third in the Fort Marcy, the chestnut was a close
second in both the GII Monmouth S. June 7 and the
GIII Arlington H. July 11 before capturing the GIII Cliffhanger S. in
Oceanport last time Aug. 23.
Last term’s GI Travers S. winner V. E. Day (English Channel)
looks to capture his first victory since that effort in this return to
the grass. An allowance winner over this course last summer,
the Jimmy Jerkens pupil was sixth in his last turf effort in the
Fort Marcy and missed by just a neck next out in the
GII Brooklyn S. over the main track here June 6. Fifth in the
GI Whitney S. at Saratoga Aug. 8, the chestnut filled that same
spot in the Temperence Hill S. here last time Sept. 12.

“I’m very happy with how she looks,” said Mandella. “She
went five eighths in 1:01 and change [on his watch] and couldn’t
look better. It is such an exciting challenge to run against
[American Pharoah]. Usually I’m stressing about what to do,
which I am, but the excitement of this is a little different. It’s
nice to be a part of it.”

Big Guns Work Towards Classic cont.
While Mandella reported that the B. Wayne Hughes runner
would depart for Kentucky Oct. 19, travel plans for American
Pharoah are more fluid.
“I have a few dates in mind, but I haven’t really zeroed in on it.
The 27th is the last date, and there’s the 25th. I’m watching the
weather,” said trainer Bob Baffert after the Zayat homebred
breezed his five furlongs in 1:01.20.
American Pharoah entered the track just after Beholder and
stood for a time near the clubhouse turn. Like his female
counterpart, the sophomore colt worked from the half-mile pole
to the seven-eighths and was clocked in :48.40 for four furlongs
before finishing up his final furlong in :12.80.
“I got him in 49 and 1:01,” said Baffert. “I didn’t want to do a
lot with him. He’ll breeze two more times here. I change from
day to day, but he’ll breeze here next week.

ANOTHER PLETCHER TRIO WORKS FOR BC Trainer Todd Pletcher was on hand Friday morning at
Keeneland to oversee a trio of young horses preparing to make
their respective next starts on Breeders’ Cup weekend.
Following the renovation break, the conditioner sent out
Michael Tabor’s Thrilled (Uncle Mo) and Alto Racing’s Azar (Scat
Daddy) , who breezed a
half-mile in company
over the Keeneland
main track in :47.80. The
duo was clocked in splits
of :24 for the opening
quarter-mile before
galloping out strongly
through another furlong.
A debut winner over the
Saratoga turf course,
Thrilled was runner-up
to subsequent GIII Jessamine S. winner Harmonize (Scat Daddy)
in the P.G. Johnson S. at the Spa Sept. 3 and was most recently
outnodded for the win by Tin Type Gal (Tapit) in the GIII Miss
Grillo S. at Belmont Park Sept. 27.
Azar, second to ‘TDN Rising Star’ Unbridled Daddy (Scat
Daddy) in an Aug. 16 maiden at Saratoga, graduated in the
GII With Anticipation S. at the upstate New York oval Sept. 2 and
was just a neck behind Isotherm (Lonhro {Aus}) when last seen
in the GIII Pilgrim S. at Belmont Sept. 26.
Also working for Pletcher was Curalina (Curlin). Owned by
Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, the GI Acorn S. and GI CCA Oaks
winner went a half-mile in the company of Race Day (Tapit) and
was clocked in :47.20 before galloping out five furlongs in 1:00
flat and six furlongs in 1:14.20. Curalina is targeting the
GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Race Day is not being aimed at the
Breeders’ Cup and is expected to make an appearance in the
GII Fayette S. Oct. 30.
“They all went extremely well,” Pletcher said. “The track was
fairly lively after the break. They seemed to skip over it really
well. I’m happy with all three.”
BATTLE OF THE BLUES Saturday’s G1 Dubai Dewhurst S. at Newmarket features the
kind of 2-year-old clash that does not always get the chance to
take place, with Godolphin and Ballydoyle squaring up with the
dominant British and Irish juveniles Emotionless (Ire)
(Shamardal) and Air Force Blue (War Front), respectively. The
former followed a commanding debut score over this trip on the
July Course Aug. 7--where he earned ‘TDN Rising Star’ status--
with an easy defeat of the G2 Vintage S. runner-up Ibn Malik
(Ire) (Raven’s Pass) in the G2 Champagne S. at Doncaster
Sept. 12 and his trainer Charlie Appleby is clear about the
mission ahead. “The most important thing is that unbeaten tag,
as I don’t want to lose that,” he said. “As he is unbeaten, it puts
a different spin on it. It is exciting to have a horse like that on
our hands and it would be great if we could win it with a horse
of his pedigree. We are not running away from anybody at this
level, but I feel that I have the best horse that I’ve trained on my
Azar (outside) and Thrilled work at

hands and I am looking forward to it. This horse’s presence is
fantastic and he is by a great Darley stallion. Whatever he did as
a 2-year-old was always going to be a bonus. It would be
disappointing if he did get beat on Saturday, but he will be much
better at three when he strengthens into that frame.”
Air Force Blue has suffered a reversal, but that came in the
G2 Coventry S. over six furlongs at Royal Ascot June 16 and since
his second to Buratino (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) there, he
has registered impressive successes in The Curragh’s G1 Phoenix
S. over that trip Aug. 9 and the G1 Goffs Vincent O’Brien
National S. Sept. 13. Aidan
O’Brien is concerned that
the ground will not dry
enough for him to show
his best. “The worry with
the horse is the ground
and getting the trip on
that ground, as he is a
very fast horse,” he said
on Friday. Also from
Ireland is the fellow ‘TDN Rising Star’ Sanus Per Aquam (Ire)
(Teofilo {Ire}) from the five-time winning Jim Bolger stable,
although he has to improve on his latest win in the
G3 Somerville Tattersall S. over this course and distance 16 days
ago. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum has a duo, with Paul
Hanagan opting for the Sept. 21 Leicester maiden winner
Massaat (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) over the Listed Flying Scotsman S.
scorer Tashweeq (Ire) (Big Bad Bob {Ire}). Shadwell’s Racing
Manager Angus Gold said, “Massaat is a horse who has shown
great promise so far. When he ran first time out I remember
coming away from Sandown thinking he could be our best
2-year-old this season. He was slowly away and ran green and
then flew home to finish a close second behind the horse that
was touched off in the Lagardere [Cymric] at Longchamp last
week. He coughed a bit after that, so we just had to back off him
and give him time. He came back and won his maiden very
nicely and we’re very much looking forward to running him
again. I’m not saying he’s going to beat the first two in the
betting and whether he’s up to this level, we’ll find out on
Saturday. He could be a high-class horse and it wouldn’t surprise
me at all if he was a Guineas horse next year.” Tashweeq, who
hails from the John Gosden stable, was authoritative in that
Sept. 11 Doncaster contest and Gold is hoping he can put up a
bold show. “He’s done absolutely nothing wrong and is going
the right way,” he added. “He’s won his maiden and a Listed
race and he deserves his place in the field and we’ll see if he’s
up to it.”

GIFTED MOVE Following his impressive win in the £500,000 Tattersalls
Millions 2yo Trophy over seven furlongs at Newmarket a week
ago, Gifted Master (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) has remained in peak
condition for a try at a mile in the same course’s G3 Vision
Autumn S. on Saturday. Trainer Hugo Palmer has taken the
plunge for the quick turnaround after his dynamic all-the-way
4 1/2-length dismissal of Ballydoyle’s G2 Norfolk S. winner
Waterloo Bridge (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) in the sales race. “I’m
running him back quicker than I normally would, but all the
indications at home are that he’s in the same sparkling form that
he was last weekend,” his conditioner said. “I think it’s just a
question of whether he stays the mile and whether he’s good
enough.” Ahead of the G1 Dubai Dewhurst S. bid of Emotionless
(Ire) (Shamardal), Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Ibn
Malik (Ire) (Raven’s Pass) offers late clues, as he was put in his
place by Godolphin’s exciting colt in the G2 Champagne S. over
seven furlongs at Doncaster Sept. 12. Also second to the
subsequent G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere third Galileo Gold (GB)
(Paco Boy {Ire}) in the G2 Vintage S. at Goodwood July 28, the
Charlie Hills trainee warrants serious consideration along with
Derrick Smith’s G2 Beresford S. third Beacon Rock (Ire) (Galileo

Tracking the G2 Rockfel S. scorer Promising Run (Hard Spun)
up the center of the track as Hawksmoor dominated early
proceedings far side, Minding was wound up by Ryan Moore as
the pace collapsed in front passing the quarter pole. Striking out
approaching the last furlong, she was soon clear and beyond
recall as Nathra chased and hit the line strong with a field of
classy fillies strung out behind.
“I don’t think she could have been more impressive,” her
jockey said. “She traveled beautifully and I was cantering the
whole way. I thought Godolphin’s would be the one to have my
eye on, but she couldn’t take her any further with 2 1/2
remaining, and as soon as I pulled her out she just powered up
the hill. She’s a lovely-moving filly and one to look forward to
next year.” Aidan O’Brien added, “She’s a lovely filly. She travels
and quickens and has always shown she’s a very high-class filly.
She had a break before she went to the Debutante, that was her
first run back and we knew she’d handle an ease in the ground
better than Ballydoyle. They’re both very high-class fillies. I was
listening to Joseph and Ryan talking before the race and Joseph
described this filly to Ryan as an Irish Guineas/Pretty Polly filly.”
Supplemented for this test, Nathra gave connections
justification for that move and trainer John Gosden was making
no excuses afterwards. “Obviously the winner is truly
exceptional and it’s hard to see her not being champion
2-year-old filly of Europe,” he commented. “It was no disgrace
for us, she ran a fabulous race coming from last but she had no
answer to the winner’s acceleration. We’re really happy with
her and happy we supplemented her.” Click for the Racing Post

was a second in this race before returning with a third in the

Aug. 15. Two weeks later, he was fourth again in the
G2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood before appearing to flatten
out when sixth in the G2 Park S. over seven at Doncaster
Sept. 12 but was kept busy with an outing in the G3 Bengough S.
trying six at Ascot on Saturday. Fourth there and showing some
sparkle, Cable Bay was ridden more positively this time and,
after stalking the strong early fractions, pounced passing the
quarter pole and hung on gamely as Breton Rock and last year’s
Dewhurst winner Belardo closed in.
Trainer Charlie Hills said, “He’s had a really long season, but
he’s got such a great temperament and a very good constitution
as well. He ran last Saturday over six furlongs at Ascot and came
out of that bouncing, so we thought maybe we’d give him one
more chance. John and Jake Warren have bought the horse to
go to stud now. Winning a Group 2 like that is great for them
and he’ll stand at Highclere Stud next year. I’m not sure if he’ll
have one more run--maybe in the USA or Hong Kong.”

Impressing with her attitude when winning on debut over this
course and distance 13 days ago, First Victory demonstrated the
same professionalism to master this competitive line-up and
provide Godolphin with more juvenile success. Breaking well
from the widest draw, the bay was quickly prominent in an
overall second before edging ahead passing the three-furlong
pole and despite drifting right in the run to the line stayed on to
hold the strong-finishing Alamode at bay. “I was a little bit
concerned beforehand, as the Teofilos like quicker ground, but
she’s done it really well,” John Ferguson said. “William [Buick]
said she had plenty of boot, but with her pedigree she should
get further than a mile and there is no reason why she wouldn’t
get a mile and a half. It’s likely she’ll stay here rather than go to
Dubai and she’s one of our more exciting fillies.”

early as the pace proved
frenetic up ahead, the bay

track to lead just before the furlong pole and draw away for an
authoritative success. “She’s so straightforward and a willing,
lovely little filly,” jockey Graham Lee commented. “She’s much

whether she’d like fast ground.”
POSITIVE UPDATE ON GOSDEN STARS G1 Irish Derby winner Jack Hobbs (GB) (Halling) delighted
connections in a racecourse gallop on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile
Friday before racing. Partnered by William Buick, Jack Hobbs
came right away from his work companion Dick Doughtywylie
(GB) (Oasis Dream {GB})
to put himself firmly on
course for the
G1 Champion S. at Ascot
in a week’s time. "We are
delighted, very happy with
that,” enthused John
Gosden. "We always
wanted to give him a
longer piece of work and
as the Limekilns is shut we
decided to bring him here. I'm very happy with his work and, all
being well, he will go to the Champion S. After his run at Ascot,
we will leave him alone for the winter." His illustrious stable-
mate Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) also got a favorable
mention with a fascinating Breeders’ Cup bid looking ever more
likely. "I am thrilled with him, he is two kilos heavier than when
he went out to France,” said Gosden. "He has got a great
constitution and never misses an oat. It is pointing nicely
towards the GI Breeders' Cup Turf. We've got to discuss and
debate it all, but there is no reason not to give it a go, as he is
retiring.”

GLENEAGLES STILL POSSIBLE FOR QE II After quite an absence from competitive action, Gleneagles
(Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) may yet get the opportunity to remind us
how good he is with connections
keen to run the four time Group 1
winner in next Saturday’s
G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. at Ascot.
Not seen since winning the G1 St
James’s Palace S. at Royal Ascot
Gleneagles has subsequently
missed engagements in the
G1 Sussex S., the G1 Juddmonte
International and the G1 Irish
Champion S. due to unsuitable
ground conditions. But with kind
weather forecast for into next
week Aidan O’Brien is hopeful of
saddling his star 3-year-old colt.
"Hopefully if the forecast is right and the week is good and he's
well through the middle of the week, there's every chance he
will run and we'd look forward to it," said O'Brien. "It's been
hard on him as he's been peaked three or four times and hasn't
got to run, but he seems in good form."
CABLE BAY BOUND FOR HIGHCLERE STUD Julie and David Martin’s Cable Bay (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}--
Rose de France {Ire}, by Diktat {GB}), a winner of Friday’s
G2 Dubai Challenge S. at Newmarket, will stand at Highclere
Stud beginning in 2016, it was announced Friday. The Irish-
foaled bay enjoyed his best season at the races in 2015 with a
win in the G3 John of Gaunt S. to go with his Challenge S. score
and has compiled a mark to date of 20-3-4-3 and earnings of
$506,993. In addition to his group wins, Cable Bay was runner-
up in the G1 Dubai Dewhurst S., as a juvenile and an additional
six group events.
“Many breeders have told us they are looking for ‘high class
2-year-old speed,’ so we are very excited to be standing the
highest rated 2-year-old son of Invincible Spirit at Stud,” said
Highclere’s Jake Warren. “He will be an attractive and affordable
prospect for breeders just like Dark Angel (Ire), Kodiac (GB),
Acclamation (GB) and Showcasing (GB), who were rated the
same or even less as 2-year-olds when they started their stud
careers.”
Out of a daughter of MG1SW Cherokee Rose (Ire) (Dancing
Brave), Cable Bay also counts MG1SW Mukhadram (GB)
(Shamardal) in his extended family. A fee will be announced at a
later time.
OCTOBER 1 The two most important yearling sales in the world are now in
the books. Both three-day sales, 443 yearlings (61.2% of 724
catalogued) sold at Keeneland September Book 1 last month for
a total of $134,261,000, averaging $303,072. At this week's
three-day Tattersalls October Book 1 sale, 372 yearlings (72.5%
of 513 catalogued) sold for 82,744,500 guineas (a guinea is
£1.05, as you probably know), an average of 222,431 guineas.
Converted to dollars, October Book 1 grossed about $132.4
million and averaged about $355,900. Gross revenues were
virtually equal at the two sales. Keeneland sold 19% more
horses over their three days (which says a lot about the pace of
selling, as anybody who's been to sales in both places knows),
whereas the October 1 average is about 17% higher.
In comparison to
last year's edition,
October 1 this year
had 9% more horses
catalogued and 11%
more sold; the gross
was up 4%, while the
average dipped 6%
from last year's
235,935 gns. Overall,
though, it was much
like Keeneland, and much like Goffs: very similar to 2014. As you
can see from the Weekly Sales Ticker, the October 1 gross
jumped by 32% from 2011 to 2012, which marked the recovery
in the European bloodstock market (it came a year later at
Keeneland). In the three years since, the gross has increased by
another 21%, or 7% per year, suggesting that growth has, well,
more or less stabilized. But it's also fair to point out that since
2011 the gross has increased by 60%, and the average by 57%,
at October 1.
While the North American and European markets are similar,
the two markets are far from identical. At October 1 this week,
six buyers signed for 103 yearlings which grossed 41,745,000
gns and averaged 405,291 gns; 28% of the yearlings sold, and
50% of the money spent. The six were: Al Shaqab (32, according
to our estimate from information compiled from the Tattersalls
website); John Ferguson (23); Shadwell (15); M.V. Magnier (11,
counting one signed for by Demi O'Byrne); South Africa's
Mayfair Speculators (12); and the China Horse Club (10). Some
of the latter two were bought in partnership with other buyers,
Aidan O ‘Brien | Racing Post

including with each other, but we have counted each yearling
once. The salient point is: the 103 yearlings bought by these six
buyers averaged 405,291 gns; the 269 yearlings purchased by all
other buyers averaged 152,414 gns. Conclusion: there were two
tiers in the October Book 1 sale--the 'top six buyers' tier, and the
'everybody else' tier. Four of these six buyers were active at
Keeneland September, by the way--John Ferguson, Shadwell,
M.V. Magnier, and the China Horse Club. Among them they
bought 47 yearlings and spent about $18.5 million throughout
the whole sale--not exactly a drop in the bucket, but not half the
sale, either.
A total of 66 yearlings (18% of the 372 sold) were hammered
down to buyers for 400,000 gns or more this week. The six big
buyers accounted for 45 of those 66, and 16 other buyers signed
for the other 21 yearlings sold for 400,000 gns or more, meaning
22 separate buyers signed for 66 yearlings which sold for the
equivalent of just under $650,000 in American money at current
exchange rates. Also interesting and significant: 21 different
stallions sired these 66 yearlings. There were 13 sires which had
four or more yearlings sell at October 1 for averages of 220,000
gns (about $350,000) or higher; in Keeneland September
Book 1, just five sires averaged $350,000 or more with four or
more sold, and one of those (Fastnet Rock) was European. The
other four were War Front, Tapit, Medaglia d'Oro, and Distorted
Humor.
Dubawi was the leading sire on average with 4+ sold in
October 1, with 11 yearlings averaging 662,273 gns (over
$1,050,000), while Galileo had 17 sell for an average of 545,882
gns (about $873,000). Frankel had nine sell for an average of
445,000 gns (about $712,000), while Shamardal had 11 sell for
an average of 375,000
gns (about $600,000).
From his first
French-sired crop,
Australian champion
sire Redoute's Choice
had five average
321,000 gns this
week. Juddmonte's
Oasis Dream had 18
average 310,444 gns,
while their venerable
Dansili had just four sell, which averaged 300,000 gns.
Invincible Spirit led all sires with 23 sold in October 1, for an
average of 267,174 gns. Lawman had four sell for an average of
261,250 gns, while Newsells Park's Nathaniel was the real
'market darling' among first-year sires with 13 averaging
232,769 gns, including four which sold for 400,000 gns or more.Oppenheim cont. p13
“As detailed in the column, Tasttersalls October Book 1 Yearling Sale had 11%more horses sold for 4% more money and a 6% drop in average compared tolast year’s sale, but the other story is that the October 1 market has increasedby 60% since 2011. With the most important yearling sales in North Americaand Europe now completed (though several big & significant ‘second-tier’ salesremain), the cumulative NA/EU yearling sale gross is up 6%, and the averageup 8% from the corresponding 2014 sales.” – Bill Oppenheim

Sea The Stars (227,357 gns); Europe's most upwardly mobile
sire on his way to the top, Dark Angel (225,455 gns); and New
Approach (220,000 gns) rounded out the 13 sires with four or
more sold who were at, above, or within 1% of the overall sale
average.
Eight sires had three or more yearlings sell for 400,000 gns or
more this week: Galileo (10), Dubawi (8), Shamardal (6), Oasis
Dream (6), Frankel (5), Invincible Spirit (5), Nathaniel (4), and
Raven's Pass (3). But the fact that 21 different sires had
yearlings sell for $650,000 or more, yet only six buyers
accounted for 50% of the gross: what does this tell us? It may
tell us that, in spite of the broader diversity of numbers and
individual buyers of expensive yearlings in America, there is a
very high concentration of elite buyers in Europe, and especially
at this sale. It also might be telling us something about a subtle
shift in the emphasis of elite buyers. In the old days, elite buyers
tended to weight three elements relatively equally: the dam and
'page'; the sire; and the individual. As good 'pages' became less
available, that element became less important, and buyers
concentrated on the sire and the individual. While the shift in
emphasis is less pronounced than when the 'page' became less
important, the results now suggest that the individual is
weighted even more heavily. The sire is still important, but it
may be that buyers are becoming more 'broad-minded,' shall we
say, about the sire than has previously been the case. If you
bring the right individual, the buyers will rate that highest of all,
and a higher number of sires become acceptable as the sires of
$650,000 yearlings.
This actually has important implications for the yearling
market. The sales companies have to just about wrestle
consignors into putting horses in their respective Book 1s;
everybody seems to think they're somehow 'better off' in
Book 2. But what Keeneland September Book 1 and Tattersalls
October 1 prove is exactly the opposite. This week suggested
the buyers come to a Book 1 expecting to find a certain level of
horse, and they are falling over each other to buy 'the
$300,000+' yearling. The sales companies understand this, and
what is happening now is that a certain standard of individual is
regarded by buyers as a legitimate 'Book 1 horse'. We don't
need smaller Book 1s; in fact, the three-day Book 1 looks like
exactly the right answer.
Consignors need to realize that this 'Book 1 psychology' which
buyers bring, along with their checkbooks, presents a great
opportunity for top individuals with a little less pedigree--
credible pedigrees, not 'no pedigrees'--to become legitimate
Book 1, $300,000+ (and even $650,000+) yearlings. There just
can't be 66 yearlings sell for $650,000 or more in three days
without really significant demand for the top horses. Instead of
racing for the middle, it would make more sense, in terms of
proven market demand, for consignors to work with the sales
companies to compile stronger, three-day Book 1 catalogues to
bring to the best marketplaces the horses buyers really want to
buy.

Horse Racing Has Faced Same Issues as Daily Fantasy Games
If you have watched a televised sporting event in the past three

PARX BARS FORMER SMARTY JONES
GROOM OVER ALLEGED EQUINE NEGLECTBy T.D. Thornton
A Pennsylvania horse owner, who formerly worked as the
groom for 2004 GI Kentucky Derby and GI Preakness S. winner
Smarty Jones, has had stabling privileges revoked by Parx racing
officials after an injured gelding he owned had to be euthanized
after being discovered at an equine auction where horses are
commonly sold for meat. Sam Elliott, the Parx director of racing,
confirmed the ban.
The site www.offtrackthroughbreds.com first reported the
story Friday, which further disclosed that the owner, Mario
DeJesus-Arriaga, 41, will be allowed to continue to race at Parx
while appealing the track’s “zero tolerance” owner responsibility
rule to the Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission.
The Thoroughbred in question is Wolf King (Rock Hard Ten),
who last raced at Parx July 6. The gelding finished third in a
$10,000 NW2L claimer, but according to the Equibase chart
“appeared lame when pulling up and was vanned off.”
Two weeks later, Wolf King was shipped off the track property.
On Aug. 3, he was discovered at an equine auction in New
Holland, Pennsylvania. Danielle Montgomery, the program
administrator for Turning for Home, a Parx-based re-homing
program for retired Thoroughbreds, said multiple meat buyers
were preparing to bid on the animal.
“We got a call when the horse ended up in the kill pen,”
Montgomery told TDN. “When we went to tell [DeJesus-Arriaga]
that the horse was there, he did offer to pay the ‘bail,’ and he
did [reimburse Turning for Home $900 for buying] the horse. He
said it was his horse, and I’m sure he felt bad about it. But the
fact is, it was his due diligence to keep the horse from getting
there.”
Montgomery said that DeJesus-Arriaga allowed Turning for
Home to retain possession of Wolf King, but that by the time a
veterinarian could evaluate the gelding’s injury, the horse had
been painfully bearing weight on a fractured sesamoid for too
long, and euthanasia was recommended.
“This should never happen anywhere,” Elliott said. “But it
should absolutely never happen here because their own
horsemen’s organization has this great, built-in organization that
takes care of this problem. Turning for Home is a tremendous
program. No horse is rejected. They take them all. So there is
absolutely zero reason this should ever happen. To me, it’s
stunning.”
Elliott said Parx management attempted to act “very
deliberately” before barring DeJesus-Arriaga, because track
officials realize that their policy, in effect, can “take away how
somebody makes a living.”
Elliott added that Miguel Vera, the trainer of Wolf King, has
previously worked proactively with Turning for Home to place
horses that had been under his care, and that Vera was not
found to have taken an active part in Wolf King’s transfer to the
slaughter auction.
“We determined the owner did not take adequate precaution
to protect his horse. It was the owner who made the
arrangements for the horse to leave the grounds,” Elliott said.
“It was more Turning for Home did the right thing, and then
[DeJesus-Arriaga] offered to repay them, which was fine, but it
was a little late in my opinion. This horse, there was a video of
him getting off the van at the vet clinic, and it made you cry. This
horse was scared to come down off the ramp he was so sore.”
TDN attempted to track down a working telephone number for
DeJesus-Arriaga to learn his side of the story, but the only
number listed as still in service did not accept incoming calls.
It was during attempts to find contact information for
DeJesus-Arriaga (who sometimes goes by “Arriaga” without the
hyphenated surname), that his connection to the 2004 Derby
and Preakness winner became evident.
A number of newspaper articles from 2004 profiled
DeJesus-Arriaga in glowing terms, detailing how he had fled
Guatemala in 1990 at age 17 to seek a better life in America. In
California, he got backstretch jobs working hands-on with
horses, and soon worked his way up in the barn of Hall-of-Fame
trainer D. Wayne Lukas, where he cared for eventual champion
Serena’s Song.
A Philadelphia Inquirer story noted that during Smarty Jones’s
elusive chase for the Triple Crown, DeJesus-Arriaga slept only a
few feet from the Derby and Preakness winner.
“Every horse he gets his hands on ends up looking like a million
dollars,” Smarty Jones’s exercise rider said of DeJesus-Arriaga at
the time.

Successful in three handicaps in succession over this trip at
Goodwood June 19, Sandown July 4 and York July 25, Chain of
Daisies was fourth on her black-type bow in the Listed Upavon
Fillies’ S. also at this distance at Salisbury last time Aug. 12. Sent
straight to the front by Dane O’Neill, the bay kept finding as
Crystal Zvezda attempted to grind her down late and was just
the tougher of the pair. “She’s grown throughout the year and is
a huge girl now,” trainer Henry Candy said. “Dane let her use
her stride and she loved every moment of it. She does
everything for you and is a joy. She’s one of the few in the yard
that looks good and I think she’ll stay in training. She’s got the
size and is continuing to develop, so she could be a formidable
beast next year.”

last time Aug. 8, was sent off at 8-1 for this Old Rowley Cup and
raced in mid-division early. Grinding his way past Goathland (Ire)
(Teofilo {Ire}) passing the furlong marker, the homebred
asserted to score by a length. Cont. p9

“After Haydock, we thought we’d go for the money,” trainer
Sir Michael Stoute commented. “I think we’ll leave it at that for
this year and he will get further. He’s progressing, because he
was a big baby and unprofessional as a 2-year-old. With each
run, he’s doing it better.” Lifetime Record: 8-3-1-3, $200,763.

{Hwt. Older Mare-Eng at 14 f+, GSW & G1SP-Eng, $298,043},
by Barathea {Ire}), sent off at 16-1, broke well to stalk Colonial
Classic (Fr) (Dansili {GB}) racing near the front end throughout
the early stages. Gaining a slight edge over that rival with 1 1/2
furlongs to race, the homebred dug in late to prevail by a half
length. The winner is a half-sister to Pinzolo (GB) (Monsun
{Ger}), SW-Eng, $125,723. “It
was a good start for her and
she had been working well,”
trainer Luca Cumani said. “It
augurs well that she has won
first time, as we try and build
a career rather than go out all
guns blazing. She behaved
very well, so we are looking
forward to the future with
her. I think she will get a mile,
no problem, but I’m not sure about further than that. She can
have a nice winter now and if she shows me she wants to go to a
Guineas trial she can.” Khaleesy (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the daughter
of the 2009 G1 July Cup heroine Fleeting Spirit (Ire) (Invincible

start to finish on the heels of the main protagonists in sixth.

LUMIERE TO REMAIN WITH JOHNSTON
Mark Johnston received some good news when it was
confirmed that his star juvenile filly Lumiere (GB) (Shamardal)
will remain in his care for a potential Classic preparation in 2016.
It is not unusual for Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al
Maktoum’s high profile 2-year-olds to be transferred to the
Godolphin operation but John Ferguson, blooodstock advisor to
Sheikh Mohammed confirmed that the G1 Cheveley Park S.
winner will be staying in Yorkshire. "We are not transferring
horses like we used to do and Mark is a Godolphin trainer now,"

“We’ve had this race in mind for some time and I thought he’d
appreciate the ground and the layout of the track,” said trainer
Clive Cox. “He’s a tough, progressive horse and certainly enjoyed
the soft going today. We have no definite plans, but he may
come back to France for the [Nov. 1 G3] Prix Perth [at
Saint-Cloud].”

Off the mark despite a wide draw over this trip on debut at
The Curragh Sept. 27, Hit It A Bomb was a warm order to follow
up in this first black-type test and justified cramped odds in
style. Settled in third early, the bay was sent up to take over
passing the quarter pole and
surged to an emphatic
success to open up Stateside
options. “He’s a very nice
horse. He’s come on well
from his run at the Curragh
and this race was important,
as he’ll learn from it as well,”
Aidan O’Brien told Irish
Racing Online. “He could go
for the Juvenile in Keeneland. He has plenty of speed and you
need to be quick around there.”
