Teacher Hiring for 2009-2010

Kaye Jacob, director at AIS West, and I just returned from teacher hiring fairs in the

United States. The amount and quality of candidates was amazing. The numbers seeking

teaching positions in Cairo was overwhelming. AIS has always sought superior candi-

dates and this year the quality measure was ever higher. We look forward to finishing

this year strong and to provide a firm foundation for these new staff. The downturn in the

world economy and the desire for international teaching experience enhanced the pool of

wonderful applicants for 2009-2010. We trust you will be pleased.

Minnesota was -10°F and Boston was 15°F. We were ready to return to the Chilly 65°F in

Cairo. Amazing how much warmer we felt in Cairo. It was a pleasure to represent AIS

and the ESOL group at the Fairs. We are recognized as leaders in the field of Interna-

tional Education.

Facebook and My Space-Social Networking Websites

Social networking by your student can have both a positive and negative set of conse-

quences. On the positive side, more and more people worldwide are connecting electroni-

cally for personal and business social networks. A good “Facebook” account can be an as-

set in sharing your interests, skills and personal resume in a variety of ways.

On the negative side, some Facebook site entries are simply stupid. Some put too much

contact information and allow unfortunate contacts into their lives. Others post photos

and behavioral details that generate unexpected consequences. This has happened to our

AIS students recently. Photos implicated our students in behaviors that violated school

policies. Consequences occurred. Others were contacted by unsavory characters when too

much information allowed a personal contact. What students consider their “private”

domain is in reality public information.

I recently returned from a teacher-hiring trip to the States. As with other employees, we

surf Facebook and My Space accounts for indications of the applicant’s character. Some

unknowing candidates never receive an interview based on an unflattering photo or event

mentioned on their webpage. Stupidity cost this person a potential job. Be sure your stu-

dent is advised on social networking pros and cons. Have you seen your students’ web

page? Would you hire them?

Students who do not meet the above deadlines or are not accepted into the IB program in February are encouraged to re-

apply at the end of May if they have shown improvement in their academics, writing skills, attendance or deadline meeting.

This is the home stretch for our IB seniors. Many, many, many critical internal assessments and IB requirements are due in

the next few weeks. Mock IB exams are the week of March 15th. Please have your student use part of his/her Spring Break

to prepare for mocks. Mock exams count as the second semester exam grade for diploma, certificate and anticipated candi-

dates.

The last day of regular school for IB Diploma seniors is April 23rd! There are only 8 weeks of classroom instruction left in this

2 year conquest.

On a closing note, I would like to thank the parents of the IB students for not only supporting their students academically

and emotionally but supporting their teachers as well.

competing but in the ISSAC championships on Feb 19-23 at

Modern English School (MES) in Cairo. Middle school

football has begun and both teams will be competing in the

CISSA championships which AIS will be hosting on March

20th and 21st. The winter season will end with the Varsity

basketball teams traveling to Abu Dhabi for the ISSAC

championships on March 4th to 8th. The girl's team will be

Grade 11:

During the first week of February, all grade 11 students during an English class were presented with an overview of the

college planning process, key websites useful in researching colleges and universities all over the world, and a college explo-

ration project. This project will serve as a point of discussion when students meet with me individually . My hope is to meet

with all grade 11 students during second semester. It is important for students to give serious consideration to what and

where they want to study during this semester, so they are ready to begin the application process when they return to school

next fall.

Grade 12:

With the completion of overseas applications, seniors are now turning their attention to applying to Egyptian universi-

ties. On February 22, AISE will host an Egyptian College Fair from 1:45 – 2:45 pm in the AISE auditorium for all inter-

ested seniors. Representatives will attend from British University in Egypt (BUE), German University in Cairo (GUC) ,

Modern Sciences and Arts University (MSA) and Misr International University (MIU). Interested seniors learned about

AUC in December when they toured the new campus last December.

Parents:

Please let us know if you have questions about how your student is doing or about how to help them make plans for the

future. We welcome the chance to work together. Also, you are always welcome to attend events including the following:

Sunday, February 15 1 – 1:40 AISE Auditorium Representative from the University of Toronto

Sunday, February 22 1:45 – 2:45 AISE Auditorium Egyptian College Fair

During the Reading Marathon November 23-27 the elementary students and teachers had a great week partici-

pating in the reading marathon. Each day the students would spend about 20 minutes reading and they had no

idea when the bell would ring to indicate it was time to stop reading. To cap off the week, the students and

teachers brought pillows and everyone sat in the halls and read for 30 minutes. Here are some reports and com-

ments from Grade 1c about the reading marathon.

GRADE 1 C-READING MARATHON

In the reading marathon I read a

nice book. It its about Junie B.

Jones, I liked sitti

AIS DELEGATION ATTENDS THIMUN

This January, 30 AIS students and 3 chaperones braved the wind and the cold in

the Netherlands to attend the prestigious The Hague International Model United

Nations Conference (THIMUN). Aside from lobbying and merging, debating and

improving resolutions and finally voting, the students spent a day in Amsterdam,

visiting the Van Gogh Museum as well as Madame Tussaud’s. Another day was

spent in Rotterdam, where students had the opportunity to relax and play paint-

ball, as well as visit the Kaunstahl Contemporary Art Museum. Senior Heba

Hosny had the rare honor of being President of the Second Committee of the Gen-

eral Assembly, a first in AISMUN history and was highly regarded for her hard

work and effort. Another senior, Mariam Aziz, was also presented with a high

position as a judge in the International Court of Justice. With a large delegation

and representing two countries, Malaysia and Denmark, AIS delegates submitted

several resolutions and frequently grabbed the spotlight, as difficult as this may

have been in an international conference of close to 4000 students. The students

returned to Cairo tired, but content and fulfilled with an enriching experience.

I brought a cat pillow and we

read the book. I like the book of

the Magic Shoe laces. I r

" On Wednesday, January 28th. AIS had it's first annual elementary school talent show! It was an amazing time for the stu-

dent performers and audience alike. Everyone worked very hard and got a good taste of what it was like to be on stage! Par-

ents and classmates came to support them and were entertained by singing, dancing, magic, comic relief of many kinds

(including an incredible barrage of "knock-knock" jokes), jump rope, soccer and gymnastics skills as well! Around 75 students

participated in all and we had two programs run back to back. The first was for the 2nd and 3rd grade and the second was

4th and 5th grade. It was an incredible joy for me to work with the students and see them all doing their best and really suc-

ceeding in the skills they tried. Thank you all for your support and encouragement with the new program and I will look for

you all at the next show!"

Sincerely,

Heather Berlin

ACTIVE CITIZEN

The Active Citizen class recently completed a variety of public service announcements

(PSA) regarding different topics they learned throughout the semester for their semester

exam grade. The PSA topics range including encouraging their peers to take an active

role in their community, anti-drug and anti-smoking campaigns, stopping hunger in

Egypt, stopping stereotyping, and a topic with a different audience in mind on secret

marriages. Anyone interested in watching these PSAs or showing them in class, please

feel free to come see Nora Elmarzouky in Room 320 in the high school.

This month, the class will continue their endeavors in Establ Antar, as they return to

carry out educational projects they specifically created for the children in the Madrasa

Fasl El-Wahd. The class will soon begin a unit on the environment including a trip to the

Mediterranean Center for Sustainable Development and finally wrapping up with final

community service projects.

There are many unusual animals in the animal kingdom; here are the ones I

thought of: chameleon, blow fish and an octopus.

A blow fish is unusual because it can blow its self up when

it is scared.

A chameleon is unusual because it changes its colors as

the colors of its background. And lastly is the octopus is

unusual because it has two hearts and squirts ink to get

away from its enemies.
