National conference on climate change and responses

    Overview:

Climate change impacts and responses conference aspires to communicate

different stakeholders about the impacts, opportunities and responses related toclimate change, to prepare them for the worst consequences which may arise

due to the irresponsible behavior and lifestyle practices.

The conference will address critical issues related to worrisome questions related

to climate change and related areas. With the presence of eminent experts and

thinkers of the climate and environment field, we will try to find the real world

solutions of the problem. Young students and practitioners will also contribute by

their nascent ideas by paper and poster presentations.

    Need of this conference/objctives:

The main concern of the climate change related problem is that it will add more

hardships to those who already struggle every day. It is well evident that

that the worst impacts of climate change will be felt in developing nations, in the

form of increased droughts, greater flood damage, stronger storms, sea level

rise, and spread of human and livestock diseases. Hence broad objectives of

    this conference will be:

To equip different stakeholders with the usable knowledge of different response

    measure for combating climate change

To equip graduate students with usable knowledge on the importance of multidisciplinary

activities in addressing climate change, regardless of their home academic discipline

    Objectives of the conference

    1. The overall objective is to decrease the severity and extent of air pollution

in growing economies in the target regions.

    2. All participants shall be given a broad knowledge of fundamental aspects

on air pollution, its causes, mitigation techniques and its effects on the

    natural environment, health and society.

    3. Through an individual project, the participant will focus on an issue that is

pertinent to his or her daily work at the home organisation

The training was build up around the following blocks:

    Emission sources and emission inventories

Chemical and physical characteristics of air pollutants and their

    cycling in the environment

Monitoring and modelling of air pollution

Effects on human health, agriculture and forestry, materials,

    visibility, etc.

Technical and structural measures for reduction of emissions; cost/

    benefit analysis

International agreements; national legislation and regulations

concerning the environment and human health

    Communication, management of change

    Summary of the training acquired

The above mentioned training program involved different set of lectures, hands

on training on air pollution/ quality models and study visits. In study visits, air

pollution mangemnet skills in different sectors were learned at the site. The most

acknowlegable part of the training was Individaul project work (IPW). It forms an

important aspect of training program which reflect issues that are of concern for

our organization. Details of lectures and other skills obtained during the training

    are given below:

Learnig outcomes of Lectures: through various lectures theoretical

undersatding of various allied and direct aspects of air pollution was

studied. List of important lectures are given below:

  • 7/31/2019 Air Pollution Mangement Program

    3/5

    Atmospheric Environmental Problems

Boundary layer meteorology for applied dispersion modelling

Local and urban air pollution modelling

Approach to Air Quality Management, strategy for measurements andmodelling

Assesement of regional air pollution in south asia

    Understanding of dispersion modeling

    Traffic emissions and particles emissions

    Air pollution and health

International legislation on transboundary air pollution

Air pollution and cliimate change Management of change process

Technical skills acquired: under technical skills hands on training was

obtained on follwing air pollution/ dispersion/ quality models

Hands on training on dispersion model-Airoviro

Hysplit air trajectory model- Hysplit Satellite based NOAA model was

learned. This model is use to estimate transboundary movement of

    pollutants (modeling results are appended).

IVE model- Ive model is web based EPA model used to estimate vehicular

emissions in urban settings. Example data set was used to undesrtand the

    applications of the model.

GAINS India Model, Integrated assessment modeling

Study visits-these visits were also the part of the practical knowledge.

Different industries, government project and research institutes were

visted. European experiences on new technologies, procedures and

techniques was shared with us. Methods of air pollution mangement in

different sectors was also understood during visits. Following visits are the

    part of the program:

  • 7/31/2019 Air Pollution Mangement Program

    4/5

E.ON. Green energy from waste- deep understanding of waste to energy

    practices was acquired.

Urban air quality monitoring stations in stockholm- Swedish experiences

of urban air quality monitoring and data recording procedures were

    studied.

Visit to Congestion tax trial system- To avoid congestion in busy streets

special system of based on market mechanism was implemented in

stockholm. We can aslo learn from such examples and can work on

    feasibility studies for India.

Swerea KIMAB AB ((A leading institute for corrosion and metals

research)-research laboratory was visited where impact of air pollution

(due to enhancement of rate of corrosion) on commercial building

    materials/ metals was stuided.

AVL MTC Motortestcenter (emission test laboratory). It is the laboratory

where emissions was estimated from the vehicels and engines. Vehicels

are subjected to different speeds and atmospheric conditions, then rate of

different gasesous and particulate emissions was studied in the aloratory.

IVL, Swedish Environmental Research Institute was visited and

information about latest available techniques was gathered.

Swedish National Research and Testing Institute was visited, this

laboratory is mainy involved in research of different biomass materials

and its testing for particulates and gaseous emissions.

    Individual project work (IPW)

The project work is an important part of the training programme, It has to be

orientated towards change and an improved air quality situation in the respective

areas. This program has a second part which will be held in India in early next

year. In the gap period research on the selected topic needs to be continued with

the guidance of Indian and Swedish mentors. I will be working on the particulate

emissions in Vadodara city in my IPW.

Benefits to the organization (Central Pollution Control Board)

As one of the principle objective of the CPCB is to improve the quality of

air and to prevent, control or abate air pollution in the country. This training

will augment board with additional theoretical and practical skills in the

field of air pollution and management.

International experience on various aspects of air pollution will definitely

allow me to participate more proactively in future endeavors of the board.

I am sure knowledge obtained from this programme will help me in my

professional work and research, and enrich CPCB as knowledge society.
