  • On behalf of the Ai Tong Parent Support Group (PSG), I will like to extend my heartfelt congratulation to all the Primary 6 students and the team of PSG parent volunteers for the successful publication of this magazine. Well done!

2015 is indeed a very special year as it marks the 10th edition of the PSG magazine publication as well as the SG50 Jubilee celebration. In August, we had resounding success in the PSG SG50 Food Carnival whereby 260 parent volunteers from all 6 primary levels rendered their overwhelming support to the event. Truly, it was heartening to witness the P6 parents coming together with their generous contributions and sponsorships, whilst preparing and serving foods to the P6 cohort as a form of morale support and encouragement for their upcoming PSLE examination. Kudos to all parent volunteers!

Primary education sets the foundation of the students learning journey as they learn to develop good study habits, moral values, reflective ability, self-discipline and other basic learning skills. Ai Tong School has excelled in these aspects when it presents a conducive learning environment for our

children. In the current digital age, Ai Tong School has also made conscientious efforts to ride on information technology and social media so as to enhance the learning experience of Ai Tong students.

Our children in Ai Tong are blessed with a team of dedicated teachers and school leaders. P6 students have been offered extra coaching in their final year by the school. Notably, teachers sacrifice their personal time with the sole objective to help the children in achieving their full potential during the PSLE examination. To achieve good results will certainly bring about cheers to all, more importantly, the children will learn spirit of appreciation or to never forget what the teachers and parents have done for them.

Graduation is a time of triumph and celebration for a job well done! It also marks the end of one learning phase and the beginning of the next phase. I sincerely hope that the 2015 graduating cohort will continue to put up your very best to journey your next learning phase with commitment and tenacity, whilst enjoying the learning experience! Always remember that you are a product of Ai Tong School and do your best to make your alma mater proud. Wishing all the very best in your next endeavour. Cheers to a bright future!

  • Dear P6 Students

    The Rainbow Forest

For the young, let me tell you, the sky has turned brighter. Theres a glorious rainbow that beckons those with the spirit of adventure, and there are rich findings at the end of that rainbow. To the young and to the not-so-old, I say, look at that horizon, follow that rainbow, go ride it.

    Mr Lee Kuan Yew1923-2015

mr lee Kuan Yew singapores Founding Prime minister

In the quotation above taken from our former Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yews speech in 1966, he exhorted young Singaporeans to follow that rainbow. Mr Lee was referring to the future and telling young Singaporeans to have hope for the future, to chase their dreams and make Singapore extraordinary.

Where did Mr Lee and our grandparents dreams lead them 50 years later?

Obviously, it led them to the modern Singapore we know today. From largely swamplands where people lived in kampongs and makeshift attap houses, to the HDB flats where most Singaporeans live in today. Singapore is ranked one of the best and safest places to live. We have well-equipped homes with television set(s), digital set up boxes with access to shows from all over the world, modern toilets and clean drinking water flowing out of taps in the kitchen sink. Singapore also boasts the worlds top education system. Our schools are rated one of the best in the world and our students have performed well internationally.

All these happened because our people had dreams and they pursued their dreams passionately.

The Rainbow Forest A Call to Dream, to be Hopeful

In this P6 graduation letter, I would like to talk about your dream(s). Accompanying this short article is a drawing, entitled Rainbow Forest by Miss Karen Yaw, Vice- Principal. It is a call to encourage you to go forth and chase your dreams, pursue your passion, and be hopeful as you step out of Ai Tong. The rainbow represents dreams, hopes and opportunities.

so what are your dreams? Are you hopeful for the future? And do you have a passion, other than getting good exam grades?

In the following, I will share with you a few real life stories of individuals which I hope may inspire you to dream big, to be hopeful, and to be courageous in pursuing a passion beyond exam grades.

malala Yousafzais, Pakistani, the girl who wants to go to school

Malala, who is Pakistani, is 18 years old this year. At 17 years old, she won the Nobel Peace Prize, becoming the youngest person to win a Nobel prize. Unlike you, she wasnt busy preparing for the PSLE when she was 11 or 12. Instead, she was writing a blog, speaking up for the rights to have an equal chance to go to school for girls. This fame brought her trouble subsequently. One day in 2012, on her way to school, two teenagers boarded the bus she was in and shot her at close range. Malala fought to hang on to her life after going through a brain operation. Today, she is well again and studying in Britain. Despite this frightening event, Malala did not give up her dream. She continued to speak up for girls right to go to school. Malala remains hopeful that one day, all girls around the world would enjoy the same right to go to school as other children.

  • Tay lai Hock, singaporean, eco-Warrior

Tay Lai Hock is in his 50s. More than 10 years ago, he was earning a good salary as a sales manager. Flying to other countries was part of his job. In 1999, a Singapore plane carrying over 100 passengers crashed near Indonesia. That incident shocked Lai Hock who started wondering what his purpose in life was. Lai Hock quit his job. With just some money and clothes, he went to Africa. For the next 4 years, Lai Hock travelled to over 35 countries. He returned to Singapore eventually and started to rally more Singaporeans to pay attention to the environment we live in. He encouraged more volunteers to take care of the environment, to connect with nature, and to learn to cherish our mother earth.

    What are your dreams?

We are immensely proud of all of you because you have persevered for 6 years and completed the PSLE. You ought to be especially proud that you did the PSLE despite the worst haze since 2013.

The world you are growing up as a teenager in the next few years will be an exciting one, full of hopes, amidst much sadness.

Our mother earth continues to be sick from global warming. This would affect everyone in the world. Sea water levels are rising. And Singapore, surrounded by waters, would be in danger if we do not think about what to do against the rising sea water level.

Wars continue to displace many families around the world. The story of Aylan Kurdi, the 3 year old Syrian boy, whose body was washed ashore in Turkey, reminded the world of the tragedy unfolding in many countries.

    But all are still well.

As you step into the Rainbow Forest of the future, remember Mr Lee Kuan Yews famous words and ride the rainbow. Pursue your dreams and dream beyond just exam grades.

We hope one day, amongst you, one will become a Malala and win the Nobel Peace Prize, or a Tay Lai Hock, a champion for a greener and more environmentally friendly world for our next generation.

    With warmest regards,

  • Sharing from SeniorsI joined Ai Tong School as a transfer student when I was in Primary 4. Looking back at my 3 years in Ai Tong, the first thing that came to my mind were the endless sessions of zero-point, chatek, and five stones that we played before school and during recess. During those days, there was no structured programme like the BICEP to promote biculturism and bilingualism. Instead, the school would organise inter-class competitions such as English and Chinese storytelling sessions, or general knowledge quiz, to instil in us our love for both languages. School was not only about studying for exams. It was about inculcating our love for learning and strengthening our Chinese values and culture.

With my experiences in Ai Tong, it was an easy decision for me to send my kids back to my alma mater six years ago. I have not regretted my decision since as Ai Tong continues to emphasise the importance of Chinese culture and values to its students. Coming back to Ai Tong has also enabled me to re-connect with the school, and to contribute back by being a

parent volunteer, both with the PSG and the alumni.

Similarly, for the graduands, I hope that even after you graduate, do drop by to visit the school if your time permits and if there is a chance to contribute back to the school, seize it.

Graduating from Ai Tong is only the beginning to many more exciting years ahead. Remember what Ai Tong has taught you, and bring it with you wherever you are. Do not forget to enjoy learning and most importantly, do not be afraid of failure.

Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts. - Winston Churchill

  • Sharing from Seniors

Ai Tong Primary has shaped me into the person I am today and it is all thanks to the teachers that imparted us, the students, plenty of good moral values and I am very thankful for that.

Choo Zhan Yinanyang Polytechnicbrother of Choo Zheng Yang (6 Perseverence)

I remember the amount of homework piling up mercilessly. I remember the pressure from peers and teachers to perform well. I remember the times my results were below expectations. I remember, clearly, the weight of the ominous PSLE.

But I also remember the people I met. The kind of warmth shared between classmates, between teachers. The instances of unexpected kindness a schoolmate can show to another schoolmate, or that time a teacher surprised us with some candy before a test. I remember the bout of nervousness and the sudden surge of adrenaline before each NAPFA station, before each choir performance, before each sprint. Its been ages since Ive graduated, yet isnt it so wonderful and sentimental that these memories have been so surprisingly well-preserved in my head?

Truly, throughout your 6 years in Ai Tong there have been plenty of ups and downs that have shaped you into your current character. They have also shaped your ideals, and what you feel are attributes of a good student and beyond that, what you feel are attributes of a good person.

Ai Tong is more than a building and a school uniform. It is a system, a people, a community. As your primary school life is drawing to an

end, dont forget to take time to appreciate everything youve built around you, by effort or by chance.

Moments of both diligent revision and spontaneous fun throughout your school years are like shifting grains of sand, volumes of which support each new step you take. Dont let them shift in vain, furtively and without notice take the time to revel in how the sand dances at your feet. There is so much of the world to learn and to love.

While you march on and face all your future endeavours, I hope you remember all that Ai Tong has taught you. May you keep a special place in your heart for the lessons youve learned, the friendships youve forged, and memories youve made. All the best!

  • Five years have flown by in an instant. I remember my Primary 6 graduation day how I miss those days. Back then, class names were from 6A to 6J. It has been a good five years since my graduation, with my own fair share of ups and downs, but I will never forget the days I spent at Ai Tong School.

I had a great class and made some great lifelong friends. Looking back at my days in Ai Tong, I must say that I really enjoyed those days. Going to school at 6.30am to play football, messing around with friends during recess, track trainings after school. All these little bits and pieces of primary school life that I miss so dearly.

I was neither particularly smart nor talented in anything, but I strived to do well in everything I did. I worked hard and always sought to do my best. With the help of my teachers, I managed to do fairly well both academically and CCA-wise. I was awarded Sports Boy Award and Student Leader Award of 2010, attained a podium-finish for Track and Field Nationals, and scored well enough to get into Hwa Chong Institution. I do not mean to brag or sound arrogant but the point I want to bring across is that I was only able to attain all these results with the help of my teachers because they really helped to bring out the best in me. As such, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my teachers, whether they are still teaching in ATS or not, namely Mdm Foo Hwa Ming, Miss Jan Hu, Miss Elaine Zheng, Miss Tabitha Wong, Mdm Low Woon and Mdm Pang Mei Yee. I understand that some of my teachers have already left the school. Some of you (students) might not understand the significance of your teachers and parents efforts at this point in time, but in time to come you will realise how much they have done for you and how little you would be without these benevolent guides looking over your shoulder, to make sure that you are on the right path.

As you grow older, you will realise how much primary school actually shapes your life, in terms of your character and values. I am proud to tell people that I was from Ai Tong because it has helped me become what I am today. I

could not have asked for a better primary school life. I have met many Ai Tong students in Hwa Chong Institution, my seniors, peers and juniors, who strive to conduct ourselves in an exemplary manner guided by Ai Tong's motto - . Till this day, I still carry these values with me because they are the driving force behind me as I persevere through tough times and help me to appreciate the lessons behind every success and failure.

To the teachers currently teaching in Ai Tong, I salute you for all that you have done for the students because it truly is an act of altruism and compassion. To the students, I wish you all the best in your future endeavours. Always strive to do your best and carry the school values into your future challenges!

  • My childhood is not unlike a hot air balloon, filled with heart-warming stories of nothing but innocent fun and mirth. It drifts away into the cloudy distance with each passing moment, and yet its vibrant shimmering form shines brightly in memory. I would like to thank dear Ai Tong Primary School for playing a vital role in these sincerely fond memories of mine. Ai Tong gave me a sanctuary to develop great friendships, in which I also felt very secure and safe in. Her loving principals and teachers provided me with a conducive studying environment, one that inspired bilingualism and a tremendous aptitude for learning- no matter when it comes to either the arts or sciences. Most importantly, Ai Tong Primary School values a students character more than simply grades. The moral and civics education lessons inculcated many of my classmates and I crucial ethical values to be practiced in life. Ai Tong Primary School, thank you for laying the foundations of what I am today.

On a side note, I would like to thank my dear parents for enrolling me into Ai Tong! It was the best decision they made for my primary level of education.

In all my years of being a student at ATS, I always wondered what I had learned. Was it the simple sums that bothered me? Or was it the extremely alien language that I had struggled to adopt? Naturally I had no idea, since I was just a kid, and was too lost in my own world and my studies to even think that deep.

What struck me was an incident that happened one day during my early years in secondary school. It was related back to me later that day after the incident. I bowed to the school's Vice Principal upon our encounter. On that same day, the Vice Principal noted that another student also bowed to her that morning. She later realised that both students who bowed to her that day, were from ATS.

This was when I realized, we unknowingly, had cultivated the habit of showing respect through the simple gesture of bowing, which was imparted to us during our early years of learning in ATS. As I reflect, this simple gesture of bowing encapsulates a core value of our

Chinese culture called . A gesture where we humbly bow to show our respect to seniors, elders, teachers and parents, for putting their tireless efforts into guiding, nurturing, sheltering and imparting knowledge to us throughout our journey in life.

The bow: a courteous gesture of respect and gratitude.

Now as I look back and think deeper, I figured out the essence of our education in ATS. It was not just about knowledge; it was about growing up, in mind and in spirit.
