FEE PROTECTION
The fees of all students attending an English Australia college are protected. The state of Western
Australia has additional protection (The Education Services Providers Registration Act). A fee refund or
course replacement is guaranteed whatever type of visa a student has, as specified by Australia law.
INSURANCE
Students are covered for accident and death as detailed in the Comprehensive insurance policies of the
College, hostels and host families. Students are strongly recommended to have their own travel
insurance.
PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS
Colour brochures, flyers, a colour poster and brochure inserts in 24 languages are available on request.

WORK/STUDY
Visitor Visa: Up to 13 weeks study full or part time. No work permitted.
Student Visa: Full time study only. 20 hours work a week permitted.
Working Holiday Visa: Work and full or part time study permitted for students aged 18-30 for up to 17
weeks for citizens of Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Hong
Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea, Norway, Sweden and Taiwan. The Australian Government may add or deletecountries from time to time.
MEDICAL
The Australian Government requires student visa holders to pay Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
The cost is about AUD40 a month, depending on length of visa. Holders of other visas are
recommended to purchase normal travelers' insurance in their country of origin.

TEACHER TRAINING
The main centre for the full time University of Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of
Other Languages (CELTA) course in Perth. The course has been run 5 times a year since 1987. Our 5
week TESOL course, for students whose first language is not English, is run several times a year.

COURSE DURATION
Rotating 8 week syllabus. Minimum enrolment 1 week, no maximum enrolment.
GRADING
There is a multiple choice grammar test (Quicktest) and spoken test (A.S.L.P.R.) at the beginning of each
course.
FIRST DAY
On the 13 scheduled course starting dates throughout the year, classes start (09:45 or 10:00) and finish
(16:0016:15) one hour later than normal. Testing and orientation occurs between 08:00 and 09:45
on the first day of the course.
ORIENTATION
Orientation is after school for new students every Monday. All students receive a welcome pack. We
recommend students download our Welcome Handbook and bring with them to Australia for reference
(www.milner.wa.edu.au/Welcome).
STUDENT CARDS
Our students, regardless of visa type, get a free I.D. card. If a student studies for 6 weeks or more they
can also get discounted travel on Perth buses and trains. Students can obtain an International Student
Card application (ISIC) from Reception.
COURSE BOOKS
New and second hand books are sold on a 50% buy-back system at Reception.
FREE BUS
The free Red CAT bus stop is 2 minute walk from Milners entrance.
CAMBRIDGE EXAMINATIONS
Courses are always held for PET from January to March, March to June and September to December;
FCE and CAE for the same dates plus June to August; CPE from March to June and September to
December. PET, FCE, CAE and CPE classes are dedicated (i.e. exclusively for students doing the
particular exam). Milner is the only college in Perth to have a dedicated CPE class.In the June and December examination courses there are usually one or two classes each for the PET
and CPE. There are usually three or four classes each for the FCE and for CAE. The overall Cambridge
pass is high. A virtual Cambridge course is held for PET from June to September. There are no virtual
CPE courses. Virtual Cambridge courses are identical to the real Cambridge courses but no University of
Cambridge certificate is awarded.
Milner College is an Accredited Test Centre for the University of Cambridge examinations.

IELTS EXAMINATION
Preparation courses for the International English Language Testing System are held for tests which
take place every two weeks. Start any Monday for minimum 4 weeks, maximum 16 weeks. Entry is
subject to students passing a satisfactory pre-entry test.STUDENT ADVISOR
Personal and academic advice is available by appointment, Monday to Friday.
CERTIFICATE & SOUVENIR
These are given to each student at a graduation ceremony held on the last day of their course. The
certificate shows duration of course, level of achievement and if the student is on a student visa,
attendance percentage.
SOCIAL & SPORTS ACTIVITIES
Some are free and others are available at an extra cost and held most days and every weekend.
INTERNET
We have 2 computer rooms with free internet access. Free wireless connection is available for student
with laptops. Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Thai Cyrillic and other scripts are available.
FITNESS CENTRE
Milner students have free membership of a local gym seven days a week.
ACCOMMODATION
Homestay: Register of 300 families, personally visited by Milner staff. The students accommodation is
arranged by the college, not an agent. In Perth, people do not live in the city centre; travel by bus or
train is always necessary.
Student Hostel: A few minutes on foot from the College.
8 fully equipped apartments owned by the College for students use. 6 of these are in the collegebuilding.
Under 18 homestay: Australian law prescribes special conditions. A written copy of these conditions is
available from the College.
Arrivals normally 2 or 3 days before the course starting date; can be up to 7 days.
Departures 2 or 3 days after the course finishing date; can be up to 7 days.
AIRPORT COLLECTION
A college representative picks up students from Perth airport any hour of the day or night. This is a 24
hour service. There is a fee for this service.

REFUNDS
A 100% refund, excluding the registration fee, is given for cancellations received at any time before the
course starting date. For later cancellation, a refund for the unexpired part of the course is given, less
40%. Accommodation refunds are 100% if one week notice is given. Cambridge and IELTS do not give
examination entry fee refunds.
COMMISSION
The college pays a commission on tuition fees. Other items for which a fee is payable (e.g. homestay,
airport transfer, registration etc) are not commissionable. Commission can be deducted from gross
fees at the time of payment, sent to the agent after payment of full gross fees or paid by means of a
credit note.
GROUP STUDY TOURS
Group study tours for groups of students (including high school age groups) can be arranged in
conjunction with Kicky Tours on any requested dates. These study tours can include organised
excursions.
AIR CONDITIONING
Reverse cycle heat/cool ducted system throughout the college and all the apartments.
PARTIES
For students and teachers are held at a club or pub or as a river cruise several times throughout the
year.
SISTER SCHOOL
Milner School of English, Wimbledon is our whollyowned school in the UK (www.milnerschool.co.uk).DOCTOR & DENTIST
Milner has a recommended doctor and dentist, both located in the city centre. Students should ask at
Reception for details.
BANK ACCOUNTS
Milner has an agreement with a national bank which enables our students to open a bank account
quickly and conveniently.
PERTH CITY LIBRARY
Located near Milner College, offers free membership to our students.
BICYCLES
Perth is a bicycle-friendly city. It is flat and has a large network of bicycle paths. Milner has a bike
parking area.

CAF
Odyssey Caf, on the Colleges ground floor, operated by an independent owner, is open from 08.00 to
16.00 Monday to Friday.
GARDEN
Our garden, a 200m2
flower and tree filled sanctuary in the city, is open for students to use between
08:00 and 17:00 Monday to Friday.
GRADING

SELF ACCESS
The library, language laboratory and computer rooms are available free of charge to our students
during their free time Monday to Friday.
FREE PRONUNCIATION CLASSES
Held every Tuesday and Thursday from 15.20 to 16.00.
ENGLISHSTAY
Our programme for students who wish to learn English one-to-one while living in their teachers home.
