Transfer of Credits

At Sheridan the transfer of credit is often referred to as Advanced Standing and Direct Entry. Please see below for a description of both terms and how they may apply to applicants.

1. Advanced Standing

Advanced standing refers to the granting of course credit based on successful completion of a similar course at another postsecondary institution. Basically, advanced standing is a course exemption and is granted on a course-by-course basis for courses taken within the last five years. As a rule, courses must be at least 80% similar to the Sheridan course to qualify for an exemption. Only 50% of the program can be credited.

TIP: Advanced standing is best applied for when the student is in Canada, as the process can take up to six weeks to complete. Students interested in advanced standing should visit the Sheridan International Centre within the first week of classes for more information.

Process for Applying for Advanced Standing:

√ When applying through the online application system, apply for entry into the first semester of a program (this is the default setting).

√ Once a student is in Canada, they must visit the Sheridan Advisement Centre for an Advanced Standing Application Form.

√ The Advanced Standing Application Form must be submitted to the program coordinator along with the following information:

• Postsecondary transcript: Advanced Standing will be granted for courses with the Canadian equivalent grade of C

• Sufficient course description/ course outlinesnote: Advanced standing is granted based on the decision of the program coordinator therefore students are encouraged to attend classes until the course exemption is granted.

2. Direct Entry

Allows for students to gain entry into a semester other than the first semester based on previous academic achievement. Sheridan residency rule states that students must complete at least 50% of a Sheridan program in order to qualify for graduation. Essentially this means for example, that students cannot gain direct entry into the third semester of a four-semester program.

Similar to advanced standing, direct entry is based on the discretion of the program coordinator and can take several weeks to process. However unlike advanced standing, applicants should inform the International Centre that they would like to apply for direct entry into a program, once the online application is made.

Process for Applying for Direct Entry:

√ Submit online application and send applicant transcripts. Apply for the first semester of program (this is the default setting).

√ Send an email to Sheridan International indicating that the applicant is interested in direct entry.

Transferring From Another College

Every year Sheridan receives many requests from students and agents to transfer to our college. Students that are currently in Canada can transfer from another college to Sheridan provided that the program that they are applying to is still open. The transfer process for specific student cases is outlined below

First Year, First Semester

If an applicant is beginning a program at another college and is interested in transferring to Sheridan, the applicant/agent is required to fill out an online application, pay the application fee and submit transcripts in a timely manner.

Once the student has successfully withdrawn from the other college they must submit the following: • Withdrawal form from the other college • Documents stating the amount of fees to be transferred to Sheridan (if applicable) • Valid study permit

Second Semester and Beyond

If the applicant is transferring to Sheridan after completing one semester in another college they should apply for advanced standing (see Advanced Standing section).

If the applicant is transferring to Sheridan after completing several semesters in another college they should apply for direct-entry.

Withdrawal and Refund Policy

Refunds must be requested within the first 10 days of classes. After the 10th day of classes tuition payments will not be refunded, nor will it be possible for the tuition to be transferred to another intake. In case of a visa denial or program cancellation the full tuition will be refunded. For all other withdrawals an administrative fee will be charged, this fee varies on a program by program basis. All refunds are issued by cheque and will be couriered to the intended party.

It is important to note, that tuition fees cannot be deferred from a January start date to a September start date. The student will be refunded the tuition fees during this period. If the student is reapplying for the next intake, they will be required to re-deposit fees.

note: Fees are not automatically transferred to the next intake if the student does not attend. A refund request must always be made.

Request a Refund

Send an email before the 10th day of classes to [email protected].

The email must include:

√ Student name

√ Student ID

√ Student address

√ Reason for withdrawal

√ The wire transfer (if applicable) – as an attachment

√ Visa refusal documents (if applicable) – as an attachment

Releasing Refund to a Third Party

If the student would like the cheque issued to a third party (relative or other party), the student must initiate the request through his/her Sheridan email account including the name of the third party and their mailing address.

Processing Time

Refunds take four to six weeks from the date all documents are submitted to us.

Changing a Program

Agents are encouraged to counsel potential students on our programs and determine the best program fit for applicants based on the admission requirements, applicants’ academic background and their career goals. It is more efficient for applicants, agents and Sheridan to apply for the right program the first time than to change programs repeatedly.

To change a program, agents are required to send an email to Sheridan International informing us of the applicant’s intention to change. If the program is full we will not be able to accommodate the applicant.

note: Sheridan will not choose a program for the applicant; it is the responsibility of the agent to consult with the applicant to determine a suitable program.

Scholarships/Awards

Sheridan offers a variety of scholarships/bursaries exclusively for international students. International students can apply for these scholarships/awards after they have paid and enrolled for the classes. Although criteria differ for each award, recipients of scholarships and bursaries are typically students who display high academic standings, exemplary leadership skills and community involvement, as well as financial need.

During the past year, Sheridan’s international students were awarded $15,000 in scholarships and bursaries. The International Centre is constantly exploring new award opportunities for international students; therefore, students are encouraged to visit the following website for the most current information: internationalscholarships.sheridaninstitute.ca.

Co-op Programs and their Benefits

Co-op and Internship programs are a form of education that link classroom learning with paid and unpaid employment experiences. Although work term placements are not guaranteed, last year, Sheridan was successful in helping approximately 95% of students find work term placements. Work placements are related specifically to the academic studies of each student. The work terms provide an opportunity to learn by doing. Students apply theory to practice, develop a meaningful view of the working world and cultivate professional awareness.

There are plenty of good reasons to enrol in a co-op/internship program at Sheridan. Students who participate in a co-op program get an early start on their careers and get experience that gives them a competitive advantage after graduation.

By participating in co-op/internship programs, students:

√ Gain realistic understanding of the job market and develop relevant employment skills before graduation

√ Graduate with significant résumé, job search skills, and a network of contacts

√ Find full-time employment upon graduation faster than non co-op students

√ Get opportunities to be employed for up to 12 months while completing their diploma / degree and earn in the range of $10-24 an hour for many programs

√ Try a variety of employment settings and career options, often resulting in better and more informed decisions upon graduation

√ Enhance understanding of course material

√ Gain experience in the practical aspects of their field and make valuable contacts for future employment

Agent Information

Agent Commission

Please submit an invoice by filling out our online claim form at: agentcommission.sheridaninstitute.ca.

You can also choose to submit your own company invoice via email to: [email protected].

Commission will be paid only to registered companies (not to individuals) and only after receipt of an invoice, within 90 days of the start of each semester. If commission is not claimed within the 90-day period the commission will be forfeited. Commission is paid for the first academic year (first two semesters) and for all levels of our English as a Second Language program in which the student is registered. When a student withdraws from second semester or is not eligible to continue in the same program, no commission will be paid if the student enters a new program. If the student drops to part-time status with only part-time tuition, commission will be based on the part-time tuition charge.

Invoices will only be processed after the first 15 days of each start of term, due to the withdrawal period and processing times. Note that we pay commission on a base tuition line only, not total fees.

Change of Agent Policy

If a student would like to switch agents then we require a change of agent form to be filled out directly from the student requesting this change. Commission will be paid to the original agent if the tuition fees have already been paid.
