VI. NEW BUSINESS (COMMISSION INPUT) Discussion of enhancing the mission of the commission through greater participation in library events, i.e. One City, One Story, advocacy efforts, and “130 Years of Reading” celebration. Chairperson Hamilton reported that she asked for this item to be placed on the agenda. She wanted to give the new commissioners an opportunity to express how they see their role as commissioners. Commissioner Calkin reported that she is a former teacher so her instinct is to want to help in some way. She would like to see cross-pollination with PUSD to leverage their efforts. Vice Chair Ayala would like to see a type of Library Peace Corp. that assigns volunteers to some part of the library. Commissioner Dent would like to see volunteer tutors to teach on a given subject. Commissioner Wang would like to have a project or a tangible role. For example, not every branch has a library association. Commissioner Bluestone sees her role as an advocate to support libraries and encourage participation. Commissioner Siegel is interested in participating in children’s afterschool programs to encourage them. Commissioner Gonzalez sees his role as advocate for the library and the community. On weekends, he visits all branches and reports any issues he sees with the facilities. Commissioner Haderlein sees her role as sharing library accomplishments and information with people. Director Sanders offered to create a slate of options for volunteers. No action taken.

VII. REPORT(S) FROM COMMITTEES/REPRESENTATIVES a. Friends of the Library Report

No report given. b. Library Branch Associates Report

Commissioner Dent reported that they had three successful programs on January 12; the Humane Society talked about their programs and services, Yoga with Mary, and Got Books, a reading program with assistance from La Salle High School students. Chair Hamilton reported that San Rafael ordered furniture for the patio. The exterior now has lighting. They will have a ribbon cutting soon. Commissioner Siegel reported that he would work with Councilmember Robinson’s field representative to start a La Pintoresca Association.
