AFRICAN AMERICAN THEME HOUSE ADDENDUM S UMMER African American Theme House (Afro-House) is a unique co-op. One critical purpose of the house is to provide a culturally rich environment which includes and emphasizes, but not to the point of exclusion, the African American community both here on the UC Berkeley campus and within the larger metropolitan area (The Constitution of African American Theme House, 2.1d.). Therefore, all Members of Afro-House must contribute a few hours each semester performing outreach/community service, working towards the betterment of the local black community. In the past, examples of such events have included food service to the local homeless population, working with black-owned businesses in Oakland, and partnering with black organizations at UC Berkeley. Failure to complete this requirement can and will result in fines levied by Afro House’s Outreach Manager. In order to fulfill our mission, the African American Theme House Constitution requires Members to actively work towards achieving these objectives by agreeing to the following: 1. I agree to attend events hosted by the African American student groups at my school. 2. I understand that the African American Theme House fosters a supportive community for African American students. 3. I understand that black organizations are welcome to hold their meetings, events, and social gatherings at the African American Theme House as approved by house council. 4. I am willing to commit to the efforts in encouraging a sense of unity and dignity in the African American Theme House that supports all members as well as the entire black community at UC Berkeley and at other local colleges & universities. 5. I understand that all members of the African American Theme House must complete hours of involvement in the African American Community at UC Berkeley and/or at local colleges & universities (the number of hours may vary on a semester basis, usually 3 hours/ semester). 6. I am willing to put in effort in the various events (including the Black History M onth program, evening study hour, Kwanzaa celebrations, movie and discussion nights, and many others constantly being held throughout the year) hosted by the African American Theme House. 7. I am willing to promote multi-racial unity and equality and encourage anti-racist beliefs and practices. *Because the majority of our residents are UC Berkeley students, our outreach efforts focus primarily on UC Berkeley. However, students attending all local colleges and universities are welcome to support these efforts, or engage in outreach efforts at their specific school.
