MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

New scientific advances, new techniques, new equipment, and new materials: the dentist today faces immense challenges to keep up with the latest developments. In this constantly evolving environment, continuing education is the absolute key to success.

FDI takes great pride in its landmark Global Continuing Education Programme, carried out in close collaboration with its member National Dental Associations (NDAs). Some 40 courses will be taken during the period 2015-16 in a wide variety of locations around the globe: so, on average, there is a CE Programme course taking place once every 10 days. Subject matter covers all fields of modern dentistry, including techniques such as minimal invasive dentistry and implantology, lectures on dental materials, as well as socio-medical issues such as oral cancer and HIV/AIDS to practical subjects such as managing a dental practice.

The aim is to ensure that qualified dentists, wherever they practice and whatever their age, stay abreast of the latest developments in dental practice worldwide. For the patient, it provides a guarantee of receiving the best in care according to global state-of-the-art. I very much advise readers to look beyond their own region and see what is going on elsewhere in the world. It provides a fascinating insight into priorities and concerns among the global dental community.

It may be worth reminding ourselves of what FDI’s CE Programme is about. It targets qualified dental practitioners in developing countries, mid-income countries and countries in economic transition. For them, professional development through continuing education is an essential part of the lifelong learning for the dental profession. It is an important aspect of modern evidence-based dental practice and an essential for dentists to maintain an up-to-date clinical and theoretical knowledge of the art and science of dentistry.

Furthermore, the CE Programme puts into practice one pillar of FDI’s global mission: ‘to advance and promote the art, science and practice of dentistry’ within the overall vision of ‘leading the world to optimal oral health’. More specifically, it supports and encourages continuing education programmes for the dental team and provides a vehicle for developing, exchanging and disseminating information on all aspects of oral health and oral healthcare.

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking and congratulating the regional programme directors and local organizers from FDI member NDAs for a successful series of events of the last 12 months. The 2016 CE Programme promises to be just as exciting and rewarding. I would also like, on behalf of FDI, to express my wholehearted thanks to members of the dental industry whose valuable educational grants and allocations have, over the years, enabled the GCEP to grow and flourish.

We can all look forward to seeing how this long-standing., landmark FDI programme develops and expands in the coming years.

Dr Tin Chun WongFDI President

It has been an exciting first year as Director of FDI’s Continuing Education Programme in Africa. Several workshops were held in many African countries, all which were organized for both National Dental Associations (NDAs) and dental students in their last year of studies at dental schools. Yet, more has to be achieved this year. In October 2015, we will hold the FDI African Congress and 1st International Dental Exhibition in Africa. We hope this will be a great success and the first of a series of three dental congresses in Africa for the period of 2015-17 inclusive, developed in partnership with UNIDI, the Italian Dental Manufacturers Association.

The new series of congresses are part of FDI’s Africa Strategy, re-invigorated at an FDI African Summit held in Cape Town in October 2012, placing emphasis on NDA capacity building, advocacy, CE programme and activities. FDI’s new programmes and initiatives directly focused on Africa are a great source of pride for us. Dr Tin Chun Wong has said how very pleased she is, as FDI President, to have been party to these developments as they are beneficial for oral health on the African continent and enhance FDI’s reputation as a leader in the field.

With this initial series of events, FDI now has the means and resources to fulfil its long-held ambitions of improving the state of oral health in Africa. Strengthening NDAs will, in the long run, have a significant and positive impact on each country’s dental sector and the ability of dental practitioners to reach a wider segment of the population.

Programme Director: Prof Charles Pilipili

Prof Charles Muhima Pilipili has been appointed Director of FDI’s CE Programme in the African region. The appointment took place at the meeting of the FDI Council in New Delhi, India, 2014.

In Africa, Prof Pilipili has been a regular contributor to a number of NDA congresses and is involved in prevention and humanitarian projects. These include, since March 2011, a project for the humanitarian screening and dental care of street children in Lomé, Togo, run one week a year by the European Oral and Dental Education Centre in Brussels, Belgium; and since 2012, with former FDI President Michèle Aerden, the MIKO Pilot Prevention Project (Mino ya Koseka or ‘smile teeth’) in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Charles Pilipili is professor at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, where he is Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, President of the School of Dentistry and Stomatology, Head of the Department of Paediatric Dentistry and Dental Care for the Disabled, and President of the International Conference of Deans of French-speaking Dental Schools (Conférence Internationale des Doyens des Facultés de Chirurgie-Dentaire d’expression Française). Member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, Prof Pilipili also holds a number of guest professorships at universities in Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
