What are they?

• They are training and educational innovation services and advice centres for teachers and schools.

• They have been set up in response to the educational system’s needs, especially social demands.

• They exclusively serve non-university levels of teaching.

• They are made up of 307 people.

Types of Berritzegune

• 18 local Berritzegunes spread throughout the territory of the Autonomous Community. They meet the needs of the teachers and schools from each area.

• 1 Central Berritzegune. It supports the Department of Education and the local Berritzegunes.

Functions of the Area Berritzegunes

The local Berritzegunes perform their functions in three fields:

– Giving advice– Training– Innovation, Experimentation and Research

Giving advice

• To the schools and teaching staff from their area. Especially in programmes driven by the Basque Government’s Department of Education, Universities and Research.

• On the curriculum and its development, and on its application by teachers.

• On schools’ requests for teaching materials and pedagogical resources.

Training

• According to the Priority Lines driven by the Department of Education.

• In response to requests from teaching staff and the training needs brought up by schools.

Innovation, Experimentation and Research

• Participating in disseminating the Department’s innovation and experimentation plans in schools.

• Creating, procuring, analyzing and disseminating materials suitable for these functions.

• Channelling the exchange of experiences amongst teaching staff members.

Functions of the Central Berritzegune

• Taking charge of developing the Department’s curriculum areas and Priority Lines.

• Supporting the local Berritzegunes.• Preparing guidelines, sets of examples and

materials for teacher training.• Collaborating with the Department’s management

by putting forward proposals, carrying out surveys, etc.

• Participating in training activities related to the Department’s curriculum areas and Priority Lines.

Whom the Area Berritzegunes report to• The Area Berritzegunes are, organically, part of the corresponding

Territorial Delegation and, functionally, they come under the Department of Education’s Directorate of Pedagogic Renewal.

Functions MANAGERIAL STAFF

Coordinating all the functioning of the Berritzegune and giving advice direct to school heads.

ADVISORS FOR STAGES General pedagogic and didactic aspects, meeting schools’ needs and responding to their requests.

Participating in developing, monitoring and evaluating programmes, offering the necessary advice for their functioning.

ADVISORS FOR ICT AND LANGUAGE NORMALIZATION

ADVISORS FOR SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

Assessing pupils with special educational needs, making psycho-pedagogical evaluations and proposing schooling for them, as well as advising their families.

SECRETARIES – DOCUMENTALISTS

Reception and administration. Responsible for documentation and for lending it.

FunctionsMANAGERIAL STAFF

Managing the whole functioning of the Central Berritzegune and liaising with Territorial Heads of Pedagogic Renewal and with the Government’s central services.

AREA ADVISORS Promoting the necessary pedagogic activities to respond to the demands of the Department and of the Area Berritzegunes.

Designing the programme, taking charge of implementing it, and co-ordinating the people who give advice on it in the Area Berritzegunes.
