There’s a wonderful image of Simeon holding baby Jesus. We rejoice with the shepherds and angels atJesus’ birth. How much do we rejoice with Simeon and Anna? Just a few verses on from the story of Jesus’birth in Luke chapter 2, Joseph and Mary bring their first-born son Jesus to the temple to offer a sacrifice ac-cording to the law of Moses. Even as a baby Jesus blesses us.

‘Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon;this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the conso-lation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been re-vealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death beforehe had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon cameinto the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, todo for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him inhis arms and praised God, saying, “Master, now you are dismissingyour servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes haveseen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of allpeoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to yourpeople Israel.” And the child’s father and mother were amazed atwhat was being said about him.’ (Luke 2:25-33)

We too continue to be amazed as we hold Jesus close in our hearts.Jesus’ life, death and resurrection are a source of inspiration todayas we learn to follow the One who will bless our lives as we trustin Him.

In the rush, may we stop to breathe and remember we are part ofGod’s greater story; of Advent hope, peace, joy and love - as welight the candles each Sunday at St. John’s and/or in your home at

your own Advent wreath. Christ promised to return. May we be ready for his coming.

The Advent Blessing: May you be steadfast in faith, joyful in hope and untiring in works of love, all thedays of your life. Amen.

From our family to your’s this Advent and Christmas Season, shalom.

Christopher+

“Master, now you are dismissingyour servant in peace, according toyour word; for my eyes have seenyour salvation, which you have pre-pared in the presence of all peoples, alight for revelation to the Gentilesand for glory to your people Israel.”- From Luke 2: 25-33

FISCAL UPDATE - As you are awarefrom our vestry meeting last February, atthe onset of this fiscal year we withdrewfunds from our reserves to cover part of thedeficit from former years. With conscien-tious care your Wardens and Treasurer havemade every effort to hold and reduce ex-penses where possible. With careful man-agement of the budget and being blessedwith no major or unexpected projects or re-pairs, we are hoping to show a reduceddeficit at the end of the year. We ask youto prayerfully consider your offerings dur-ing the Advent season to further our ongo-ing ministries within St. John's and ouroutreach ministries beyond.

“Get Ready,” an Advent Pageant, took placeat St. John’s Sunday, November 27. Here, Rev.Shirley leads the prayers with some of the castfrom the pageant. Middle photos: DesleyWhite entertains at Roast Beef Dinner lastmonth. A crowd of close to 100 enjoyed the

Festival of Nativity Scenes

Teaching Garden is Off and Growing

Friday, Dec. 2 - Sunday, Dec. 4

St. John’s families are sharing their na-tivity scenes with the community Dec.2-4 at our annual Festival of NativityScenes.

Dozens of manger scenes in materialsranging from traditional wood carvingsto fabric, glass, and plastic are being dis-played throughout the weekend.

The festival begins with the TreeLighting in downtown BowmanvilleDecember 2. Hours are: 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.Friday and 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday.

Visitors are also invited to enjoyChristmas treats and Christmas carolswhile visiting St. Johns.

The display ends following Sundayservices Dec. 4. Many thanks to allthose who loan their treasured nativityscenes to this community outreach,

Thanks to the children in the Sunday School yourgarlic has been planted and with the right growingconditions we should be harvesting Music and Siber-ian garlic in July 2017. In the same raised bed, wewill be experimenting with an irrigation system usedduring Jesus’ life on earth … buried clay pots. Fastgrowing water hogs such as squash vines will thriveusing this type of irrigation.

In the other bed, we are planning to create a pizza.Yes, growing all things that you would put on a pizzaminus the pepperoni of course. Food grown will beused to educate our children and distributed to thosein need in our community.

Remember over the winter months to feed yourcomposter now named C.P. by the children. You will

have plenty of vegetable scraps and coffee groundsthat C.P. will love. Tell your children how importantit is to build soil and save God’s earth.

At the back of the church there is a Richter’s Herband Vegetable Catalogue that we are asking parish-ioners to look at and suggest planting ideas for 2017.So, take a look and make your suggestions known onthe paper provided.

New members to St. John’s and current membersmay be interested in all the spin off programs the gar-den project could create. Ideas include a children’secology club, a horticultural show, or horticulturalphotography club, and cooking classes. The possibil-ities keep on growing.

Migrant Farm Worker outreach from St. John’s Anglican,Bowmanville continued from our start in 2015.

June 4th, St John’s hosted first of two health fairs for theworkers, who were given access to health care professionals, information and free supper. Bikes were made available.

In June and July, workers were picked up or bicycled them-selves to St John’s for Sunday worship, maxing out at 10workers one Sunday morning.

Rev Kit and Desley White began music practices in theevening: June 29, July 6, first Spanish Mass Sun July 10, 7pm with celebrant and preacher the Rev. Augusto Nunez (As-sistant Curate St Jude’s Anglican Church, Wexford/Scarbor-ough), over 40 workers and volunteers present.

Rev Kit applied and successfully received a grant from theAnglican Church’s Area Council of Trent-Durham, for theoutreach ministry to the migrant workers of $ 4000.00 tocover costs of preachers, celebrants, musicians, bicycle andrepairs, hospitality, advertising and other travel costs (approx-imately $1800 remains in account). Average attendance atworship at St John’s for the following services was 20. Fiftyworkers and volunteers celebrated Thanksgiving with us.

In the Fall as the temperature cooled, we delivered the warmclothes directly to the farms. We purchased/gathered abouttwo dozen work boots with steel toes, rain coats, toques, linedwork shirts and theever-popular hoodiesof all sizes.

Another group ofnew volunteers cameon board from New-castle; Tim Brydsonand his pastor andwife Jacques and Ti-tania Nadeau (whospeak Spanish andEnglish) from New-castle FellowshipBaptist Church beganvolunteering at Ever-Fresh farm inOctober.

The ministrycontinues to de-velop and changeas we seek to meet the spiritual, material, social and trans-portation needs of our migrant worker-neighbours. DesleyWhite has chosen not to return next year on Seasonal Agri-cultural Worker program but would still like to come back toour ministry and perhaps continue his trade of construction, particularly ‘tiling.’ On Sunday morning, November 18, Al-goma worker Alvin Rowe, from Jamaica, gave a testimonyof thanks to St. John’s on behalf of the workers.

We have had contact with nearly 100 men, half of themMexican (an answer to prayer) and initiated or developed re-lationships with employers at four farms: Watson’s, Price’s,Algoma and Everfresh.

Next year we hope to continue outreach with the DurhamRegion Migrant Worker Network (DRMWN). Thanks be toGod for his provision and the joy of our relationships withone another.
