On Saturday, November 14 wehosted our annual Christmas
Craft Show and Coffee House. About350 visitors came through our doors, not to mention our 25 splendid craftvendors and the many parishioner vol-unteers.
Congratulations to this year’s co-chairs, Carolyn Franke and Annis Teb-butt, and their capable organizingsubcommittee. Well over $3,000 in netrevenues, from all sources, was raisedfor worthy St. Olave’s and charitablecauses. And judging from all thefavourable exit comments at thedoors, a great deal of goodwill createdfor our parish. (See photos on page 3.)
On Friday, November 27, many ofus enjoyed our second parish outingfor dinner and theatre to the remark-able Famous People Players. Almost70 parishioners and their guests joinedthe group. As founder and St. O’sguest speaker Diane Dupuy intro-duced the performance, she thankedus for coming and remarked that St.O’s was “a cool place to hang out.”We can’t help but agree!

These past few months have seen busytimes at St. Olave’s!
On September 8, along with a team of St.O’s volunteers and the Toronto Cornish As-
sociation, we welcomed the Trelawny Cor-nish Choir from the UK. More than 80male singers (see photo of packed houseabove) entertained a sellout crowd of hun-dreds of concertgoers, resulting in a suc-cessful event (which netted us about$4,000!).
On September 13, our parish said a fondfarewell to Reverend David Burrows dur-ing his final service. Many affected by
David’s ministry over the years came fromthe parish and beyond to wish him all thebest in retirement. The Wardens join intheir very best wishes for David and Penny.
We welcome our Interim Priest-In-Charge, Reverend Jeffry Kennedy, whobegan to lead our parish on September 20,until a new Rector is selected. It was ourgood fortune that Reverend Kennedy wasat St. Olave’s when David Burrows was illat this time last year, and again in August2015, during David’s annual leave, so he isa familiar face to everyone.
The Parish Selection Committee has fi-nalized our Parish Profile and it has metwith Bishop Poole’s approval. Perhaps fit-ting for Advent, now we wait for candi-dates to be identified. The profile will soonbe posted on our website.
The Wardens are most grateful for all thework done by Sheila Tait, our PropertyChair, and Dave Webb, our Sexton, in facil-itating the completion of our splendid newparking lot! We now face challenges aheadwith the Rectory and are currently workingon maintenance and repairs. The Rectoryhas been inspected by the Regional Dean, there have been repairs to the roof and gut-ters, tree removal and new locks installed. In accordance with our insurance, it isbeing visited every day. We are accom-plishing that with the help of Dave andSheila.

Waiting for Advent
The first Sunday in Advent marks thebeginning of a new liturgical
church year. It is a time for reflection aswe prepare to celebrate the birth of TheChrist Child.
At St. Olave’s we also begin a newSeason together in the midst of changeand anticipation for the future.
Sometime in the coming year, a newIncumbent will be chosen and ap-pointed to the parish. It is a time of ex-pectation and excitement for the future.
As we look beyond the walls of ourParish Church we see disturbing vio-lence and terrorism in the world.
In the BCP, the Collect for the firstSunday of Advent, and to be readthroughout Advent, seems remarkably
relevant and poignant as we navigateour way through the world events atthis point in its history.
Many in our world live with fear anduncertainty. Although written sometimebefore 1549, the words of this beautifulprayer continue to resonate as they didwhen the Collect was first composed: “Almighty God, give us grace that we
may cast away the works of darkness,
and put upon us the armour of light,
now in the time of this mortal life, in
which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit
us in great humility; that in the last day,
when he shall come again in his glori-
ous Majesty, to judge both the quick
and the dead, we may rise to the life im-
mortal; through him Who liveth and
reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit,
now and ever.”
Amen

Advent 2015 www.stolaves.ca The Olave Branch 3
This fall term started off with a bang hav-ing 33 children at the farewell service of
Father Burrows on September 13. Sincethen we’ve had an average of five to sevenchildren along with the incredible youthhelpers.
The theme of this term has been “HearingGod’s Voice”. The children have been learn-ing the different ways God speaks to Hischildren: through the Bible, with a “stillsmall voice,” through impressions in thespirit. It’s important for children to be ableto learn how to discern the voice of God, so,we’ve been applying what we learn everyweek with an exercise that encourages wait-ing and listening in His presence.
We’ve been learning the differences be-tween the “spirit” world vs the “natural”world and how God speaks to our spiritswhile at the same time confirming His wordthrough the scriptures.
For Remembrance Day we had about 20children, including guests from Beavers andBrownies. The kids made a wreath of pop-pies and learned about the writer of In Flan-ders Fields.
In the next weeks we will be rehearsingand getting ready for the Nativity play De-cember 13. If your child would like to par-ticipate, please bring them to church fromnow until December 13 for rehearsals.
Operation Christmas Child was anothersuccess, with 140 boxes collected at St.Olave’s. Thanks to all who participated!

Are you a bookworm or digitally savvy? Here might be an opportunity for you.
Since Advent 2008, I have cornered a littlespace in The Olave Branch to draw atten-tion to worthwhile reads and encouragedmembers of the congregation to join me in
writing reviews. (Incidentally the delightfullittle sketch of a mouse that illustrates The
Library Corner was taken from a doodlemade by Gladys Kirk, a librarian long be-fore I joined St Olave’s).
Following discussion at a recent meetingof the advisory board, it was agreed wewould put out an invitation to form a li-brary sub-committee to help manage theongoing challenges of our library as we re-spond to the issues that face us in the 21stcentury.
I am asking the readership of the Branchto ask yourself, do you have skills, time
and a gifting to bring a breath of fresh air toour St O’s library? Are you a traditionalbook reader with valuable insights? Or doyou use technology, and read in multipledifferent ways? Whether a traditional liter-ate, thoughtful, reader of print on paper or areader using multi-modal means of literacy, please consider the possibility of joiningme in making the decisions about the futuredirection of our little library here at StOlave’s.
If you would like to get involved, call meat 416-762-2952, or let a warden or ourchurch secretary, Judy, know.

Passages for 2015
WINDOWS TO THE SOULBy Janice Douglas
For a long time I have been fascinatedwith the essay that is posted on our web-site, “Wood, Stone and Stained-Glass” bythe late Rev. Dr. Versey Wigmore. I never metRev. Wigmore, but the type-written docu-ment an enchanting glimpse into the manwho was St. Olave’s third Rector (1955-1982). I especially liked the descriptions ofour stained-glass windows, most of which came from the studio ofToronto artist Yvonne Williams (above). So I proposed the idea of anEvensong talk on the subject to William Cowling, and he scheduled mefor Epiphany, January 6, 2016 at 6 pm. Life is full of coincidences. In re-searching Yvonne Williams, I came across an article written about herby Sarah Hall, herself an accomplished stained-glass artist with a stu-dio in High Park. I asked Sarah to meet me at the church one afternoonthis summer and she noted many artistic details in the windows. Notonly is she joining me on January 6, but when she saw the impressivecollection of windows, she asked to lead a ROMWalk Tour here in May.Details to follow. See you in January I hope!
