TEACHER:Hereissomeinformationonthecomposerandthestructureofthetune.BronislawKaperwroteOnGreenDolphinStreetin1947foramoviebythesamename,butthetunedidnotbecomefamousuntiljazztrumpeterMilesDavisrecordeditin1958.Jazzwasmovingfromthefrenziedbebopstyleto“cool”,andDavisledthemovement.OnGreenDolphinStreetfitthecooljazzstylewithitsbuoyant,“spacy”openingandmediumtempo.This“floaty”qualityiscreatedwiththepedalnoteofthekeystayingconstantfortheopening7barsasthechordschangeaboveit.ThecoolmoodisaugmentedbythebassplayingarepetitiveLatinpatternwhichleansonbeat4insteadofbeat1.Aftertheopeningsevenbars,thebassplayeranddrummerswitchtoastraightaheadjazzfeel,leadingintotheBsection,whichisbasedoniiVIpatterns.After8bars,AreturnsasdoestheLatinfeel.TheCsectionismorecomplicated,butstilllargelybasedoniiVI’s.TheformisABAC.
