About the Judging

Exhibits are placed using the American Judging System where

exhibits are ranked one against another. Awards will be made

if, in the opinion of the jury, the items entered have sufficient

merit. Silver, Fair Theme and Honorable Mention awards may

be awarded in each class if judges so determine.

Jury selection is final. The judges’ decisions are final and cannot

be protested. Winner’s names and titles of the pieces in the exhibit

will be posted on the Alameda County Fair’s website on the

‘RESULTS’ page.

Awards

Each Entry is restricted to one cash prize.

Each artist or poet can earn multiple awards, however, only the top two cash awards will earn a cash prize. Cash awards will be mailed at the conclusion of the Fair.

During the Fair, fairgoers vote for their favorite piece in each of the Fine Art divisions. The

ribbons for these Public Favorite Awards go on the wall next to the winners during the last

weekend of the fair.

Purchase Awards

The Alameda County Fair may purchase pieces from the 2020 Fine Art Exhibit. These purchases

will become part of the Alameda County Fair’s Permanent Collection.

1st Round Online Judging

The Alameda County Fair Fine Art Exhibition is a juried exhibition. Not all entries are accepted. Fine Art Department entries will be judged first from uploaded images viewed online to determine if the submitted entry meets the basic requirements to participate in this competition and the subjective standards for exhibition set by the judges. All entries will be juried by recognized authorities in the art world.

Tips and Instructions on How to Enter… Mandatory Online Entry Process for all entries in the Fine Arts Department.

You will need a digital photo of your art piece, or PDF for Poetry in order to enter the contest. See

below, ‘Simple tips for photographing artwork for non-photographers’.

Digital image size: For online entries, the ideal resolution in pixels is 800 x 800 (length x width).

Images that are larger than this need to be resampled (resized) to that size while still maintaining

the original aspect ratio. It’s fine to upload images that do not match the ‘ideal size’. The maximum

storage size limit is 6 MB.

Division / Class: An entry eligible in more than one Division and/or Class should be entered in the

Division and /or Class for which it best qualifies. The Alameda County Fair or the judge may

disqualify or transfer to the correct Class (at his/her discretion) any entry, which is not a true

representative of the Division or Class in which it is entered. It is not, however, the responsibility of

the Alameda County Fair or a judge to transfer an entry to the correct Class or Division.

Title: Use a short title: it may be abbreviated to accommodate the label space. If you do not want

to title your piece, you will need to enter “untitled”. If you have more than one “untitled”, put a

number after the word. For example, “untitled 1 ‘, “untitled 2”, etc. Adding one descriptive word ex:

‘tree’, ‘owl’ helps track the art piece. Please choose your title carefully. The title cannot be

changed later. This exact title is what will appear on the wall next to your piece if it gets displayed

in the exhibition.

Sale Price: If art is for sale, include price or indicate “NFS” if not for sale. We do not have POR

(Price on Request) or B/O (Best Offer) as an option. Paintings and sculpture DO sell at the Fair so,

please, choose your price carefully so that you will be happy if it sells. The Fair takes a 20% sales

commission from each sale. Sale prices cannot be changed. No changes after registration. No

exceptions.

Description: The description can be brief. Mention of medium and subject content is ideal. The

description does not go on the wall label.

A shot, a siren. A siren, a shot. Does it matter which is first? Either way someone’s dead. One life ended, more destroyed— The shot, the shooter, Those left behind.

The act, the image. The image, the outrage. Marches, protests, funerals. Pulpits and airwaves fill with eloquence, Prayers and pleas and vows for change. Yet where’s the outrage When nothing changes?

Black skin, brown skin, White skin, tan, Blue jeans, badge, Crescent, cross, six-point star. Does it matter who bleeds first? Either way blood is spilt, Hands are stained, souls are rended. Vengeance, justice, Someone tell me, What’s the difference?

Shake a snow globe, Glittering flakes in fury swirl, Slacken, then subside. A shot, a siren. A siren, a shot. Yet again a life is ended. Yet again the globe’s upended. Yet again nothing changes.

And since only poems written in real-time at the Fair are eligible for entry, there’s NO ONLINE ENTRY.)
