The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is already considered one of the most international universities in the world, but we are not satisfi ed. Our ten-year strategic plan has the strapline “Asia’s Global University” and we aim to justify that with activities under the headlines of 4 words beginning with the letter I (we refer to this as 3+1Is because the fi rst three Is converge on the 4th). These are Internationalisation, Innovation, Interdisciplinarity and Impact and they apply to all the activities of the University in teaching, research and knowledge exchange.

We aim to make studying or working at HKU a truly global experience in two broad ways: fi rst by encouraging what we call “internationalisation at home” with globally-orientated curricula; frequent overseas speakers giving open lectures or seminars, including our active programme of inviting distinguished international scholars to spend weeks or months at HKU; numerous international conferences; opportunities for improvement of language skills (our teaching medium is English but we welcome multi-lingualism on campus and provide teaching programmes in many languages);

and student or staff-led events promoting understanding of diverse cultures, foods, music and dance etc; and secondly via our ambitious plans to provide 100% of our undergraduates with two opportunities for experience outside Hong Kong, one in Mainland China and one somewhere else in the world. We believe this is one of the most ambitious internationalisation targets of any university in the world. Currently about 50% of our undergraduates have an experience overseas and about 20% in Mainland China. Although not all the experiences will be study-orientated or credit bearing (experiential learning, charitable work, industrial placements and internships all count), one manifestation of our plan is that we aim to offer dual degrees with prestigious international partners. Recent such agreements have included those with UCL, Sciences Po and University of Southern California; we will soon be able to announce more. In the 2017 Times Higher Education’s ranking of the 150 most international universities in the world, HKU is ranked 3rd. The two universities above us are focused universities, so we can rightfully claim to already be the number 1 comprehensive university in the world for international outlook. However, university strategy is about

more than league tables: we believe we can improve further.

Regarding Innovation, our gifted and highly creative staff and students use and develop modern teaching techniques; our research aims to harness the innovative potential of recent improvements in technology and design; our knowledge exchange activities include novel methodologies as well as traditional ones. We are well-placed to promote Interdisciplinarity because we have ten Faculties representing the broad range of academic areas including humanities, sciences and professional disciplines. We actively encourage joint teaching and research programmes between our Faculties and of course also encourage inter-disciplinary working with outside partners whether they be other universities, schools, industries, governments, charities, NGOs or others. We want all of our activities to have Impact, which we defi ne as making a difference. Impact can be local, regional or global, it can affect individuals, groups, sections of society or whole nations. If our work has impact, our students and staff will contribute to making the world a better place whilst also developing themselves personally.

All this is made possible and enhanced by Hong Kong’s unique place in the world. We are at the gateway to China and Greater Asia but with origins in the British style and longstanding links to the Western world. The innovation culture is strong in Hong Kong and in neighbouring Shenzhen (where HKU manages a 2,000 bed hospital) and in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province (where we have a research and innovation institute on a new science park). The population scale, cultural diversity and growing economic power of China combine to make this a very exciting part of the world, full of opportunities. HKU’s role is to equip our graduates with the skills to fl ourish in the exciting new world in which they will live the rest of their lives.

HKU’s exceptional academic standards, pioneering research, collaborations with prestigious partner universities worldwide and near 100% employment record make it the first choice for many of the city’s top performing HKDSE scholars, as well as a popular destination for outstanding international students. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that HKU students excel academically in foreign universities where they study as a part of their degree. This is true even at the very best universities in the world. The employment situation in Hong Kong, the academic standards of students from the region, the education provided by HKU, and the reputation of HKU in Asia and now beyond are the reasons why the admission standards of the University are so high, and why CNN described HKU as one of the “Harvards of Asia”, or why the Times Higher Education referred to HKU as the “Oxbridge of East Asia”.

THE TOP CHOICE for Top Students

The Top Choice for Top Students 76

Admitted students' academic standards in Hong Kong, Mainland China and Southeast Asia are considered among the highest in the world.

A near-perfect employment rate for both international and local graduates makes HKU a first choice for ambitious students. This is a combination of economic circumstances in Hong Kong, the general economic power shift to South-East Asia and an education that employers value.

HKU students have proven to excel academically in exchange programmes at some of the world’s leading universities.

Hong Kong Government allows international students graduating from HKU to take up employment in Hong Kong. The employment rate for international students mirrors that of local students.

HKU was an ideal choice for my undergraduate studies, as I wanted to learn in a competitive environment where I could challenge my own abilities. Under the guidance of expert researchers, I had the chance to work on a project focused on developing a novel nano particle-based drug delivery method to treat aggressive cancer cell lines. From representing my University at the Hong Kong Debate Open, to interning at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientique in France and at HKU’s School of Biomedical Sciences, my undergraduate journey has been thoroughly enriching from both a personal and academic perspective.

The Dual Degree is ideal for anyone interested in politics and international relations. It is great for students to move on from studying Middle East at Sciences Po to getting insights about East Asia and China through HKU; with both regions playing important roles in shaping Eurasia’s international politics and economics. It is also exciting for me to be a part of a university (HKU) in which people have very diverse fields of academia and I can befriend people coming from all sorts of backgrounds like engineers and biochemists. The Dual Degree has given me an advantage in job searching as employers nowadays look for multiple skills and a global vision. The unique experience of learning from both the European and Asian viewpoint makes me articulate my thoughts clearly in a cosmopolitan environment.

HKU’s fl exible course structure promotes diversity in both the fi eld of study and lesson content. It allowed me to try out different subjects rather than being tied down to the classes that belong in my faculty. There is a bit of everything for everyone, and you can choose to focus exclusively on one fi eld or branch out into many others. Even my somewhat odd combination of interests in biology and history – which I thought would be near impossible to fi nd any similarity or overlap between – were catered to!

Whenever I question my studies, clinically or academically, they are there to guide me. Unlike a more traditional method, there is no correct answer for any question. The problem-based learning approach means lectures raise questions and provide guidelines on what to read. You have to look through textbooks and search for reliable sources on the internet to fi nd the answers for yourself.

BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING

I chose mechanical engineering because of my passion for science, and taking part in the Helios project confi rmed that I absolutely made the right decision. I was responsible for the report writing, car chassis, car shell design, and had to rely on so much more than what I had learned in the classroom. This competition, and everything I learned during the process, made me confi dent to go on to become a mechanical engineer that collaborates with engineers across the world to solve global warming issues.

With the guidance of HKU teachers and researchers, the six-month project gave engineering students a chance to put their theoretical knowledge into practice while gaining hands-on design, manufacturing, communication, and teamwork experience.

A true testament to the diverse and innovative curriculum at HKU, Helios has been lauded for its groundbreaking, precise design. The students managed to reduce the weight of the solar car while decreasing rolling resistance to maximise energy effi ciency. Striking the right balance between solar energy capture and energy consumption during running was instrumental in the success of Helios.

IDEAS TO REALITY: DREAMCATCHERSStarted as a series of events to help ignite the flare of entrepreneurship among HKU students, DreamCatchers has become a hub of innovation with forums, mixers, events, courses, training, marketplaces, co-workspaces, funding for programmes and an innovation commons. DreamCatchers is cross-sector and inter-generational, for alumni, students, friends old and new, everyone with passion and determination to innovate and change the world.

One of the highlights of this initiative is the 100K entrepreneurship seed funding initiative wherein students pitch their ideas and the best ideas win funding worth HK$100,000. Over the years, projects from various fields like biomedicine, travel, and technology have won funding and have gone from mere ideas to reality.

Current projects include embedding interactivity into public art, envisioning the future of libraries and hospitals, and transforming small homes into smart spaces.

In partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency, LAAB’s co-founders Yip Chun Hang and Otto Ng embarked on an innovative project to recycle nearly 100 pieces of wood from the historic Wan Chai Pier following its demolition in 2014.The wood was treated and reshaped into desks, coffee tables and benches for T.Cafe – a restaurant at the waste-to-energy environmental facility T.Park in Tuen Mun. In keeping with the eatery’s up-cycling theme, LAAB preserved the spirit of the half-century-old pier by breathing new life into the well-worn slabs of dock wood. Smaller pieces eroded by the sea were sealed in transparent resin seating blocks to retain the character of the pier’s timber.

SERVICE LEARNING: BUILDING SUSTAINABLE CITIESBringing together students from the Faculties of Architecture, Engineering and Science, HKU’s Sustainable High Density Cities Lab drives solutions for urban sustainability. The Lab exemplifi es the University’s interdisciplinary approach by enabling students from the fi elds of architecture, science and engineering to pool resources and tackle challenges faced by future cities, including urban farming solutions and climate impacts on high-rise buildings. The initiative joins an innovative network of research labs at universities in China, Singapore and the U.K.

REVOLUTIONISING RESEARCH: CREATING GISTNOTEAn intelligent online research tool, GistNote was founded by HKU student Michelle Chan in 2016. The app’s abilities to drag and drop, organise and review highlighted information from web pages in one location caught the attention of Google Chrome.

The start-up saves students from wasting time keeping track of sources, making notes, copying information, and generating citations. Currently hosting 16,000 users in more than 100 countries, and generating over 100,000 highlights per week, GistNote has become popular at educational institutions in Hong Kong and at leading universities worldwide.

Through programmes offered by HKU, I’ve been able to visit Taiwan, Shanghai, Spain and the United States in recent years. I was lucky enough to participate in the Yale Visiting International Students Programme (Y-VISP), which sparked my interest in the tech industry and led to my summer internship in Silicon Valley. When I returned, HKU's fl exible academic system allowed me to change my second major to computer science, and I interned as a UX designer at Amazon in Seattle the following summer. Last year I found my own company, GistNote. None of this would have been possible without the support of HKU and its fantastic community.

My choice of university came down to what the institution could do for me after graduation. Not only does HKU have a global reputation as an excellent school, but it also offers plenty of experiential learning opportunities both in Hong Kong and across Asia. As part of my Transformative Business Immersion in Developing Economies course, I spent an immensely insightful month offering advice and working with micro-businesses in the Philippines – an economy so vastly different from what I was used to. I am currently a managing director in charge of 40 people at the Eureka Consulting Group – a registered local charity that links HKU students with pro-bono opportunities at start-ups and non-profit organisations. Later this year I’ll be heading to Tsinghua University as part of the Schwarzman Scholars leadership programme.

EMBRACING Diversity

Promoting China’s role on the world stage, the Belt and Road initiative is a development strategy designed to improve trade and cooperation between China and the rest of Eurasia. Running along the old Silk Road network of land and maritime routes, Belt and Road aims to create an economic belt that redirects Chinese resources into an improved regional infrastructure for more than 60 countries invested in opening up trade channels.

HONG KONG: ASIA’S EDUCATION HUBHKU had been researching the maritime Silk Road and attracting international students long before the formulation of this policy. There were already several scholarships being offered under the scheme before the Hong Kong Education Bureau launched the Hong Kong Scholarship for ‘Belt and Road’ students to attract outstanding pupils from Indonesia and Thailand to study in Hong Kong.

Therefore, HKU’s long established plan will be further extended by the help of Education Bureau’s support. HKU will continue to recruit students from ‘Belt and Road’ countries to forge closer ties with participating countries in the region, and further grow its remarkably diverse and multicultural community of students.

The highlight of my time at HKU was leading a team of 10 students in hand-building a remote-controlled airplane for the 2017 Taiwan Unmanned Aircraft Design competition. Over eight months we worked really hard to design, build and test the airplane –I learned so much about the manufacturing process. At the tournament we were selected as the fi rst runners-up in the advanced engine design category. It feels fantastic when you work so hard for something and achieve great things for both HKU and our team.

Last semester I took a course called the Science of Crime Investigation. I was deeply impressed by the two professors – one a practicing pathologist, and the other a fi nancial crisis lecturer who works in the fi nance industry. Both of them are not only teachers, but are also people who are practicing the things they teach in their daily lives. More than just knowledge, they gave me invaluable fi rst-hand experiences.

I make the most of the endless opportunities on campus at HKU by joining as many activities and events as possible. Last summer, I interned at a start-up based in Hong Kong called BloomMe. As a business administration major, these are the kinds of opportunities that made me choose HKU. I managed to get the position after attending HKU’s start-up fair. I worked in the fi nance department, where I was tasked to handle daily user statistics for the app, and got a really good grip on Google Analytics.

The fi rst thing that impressed me about HKU was its cultural diversity – both the students and the staff. I think diversity brings us closer together, especially in the residential halls where we all live in close proximity. In Swire Hall, the local students were extremely kind and taught me a lot about the local culture and their ways of socialising. I believe the interactions and cultural insights were benefi cial to us both. It remains one of my favourite things about HKU.

HEFORSHE: GUIDING GENDER EQUALITY In 2015, HKU took a stand against gender inequality and became the first university in the world to launch the UN’s HeForShe initiative on campus. HeForShe is dedicated to involving both men and women in the pursuit of gender equality. HeForShe’s IMPACT 10X10X10 initiative comprises 10 heads of state, 10 CEOs of global corporations, and 10 university presidents, including HKU’s President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Mathieson.

HKU strives to equip every student with the tools they need to make a positive impact on society. Through carefully tailored curriculum, knowledge exchange, cross-cultural exchanges, and cross-disciplinary collaborations, HKU creates opportunities for students to bring real benefi ts to communities locally, regionally and globally.

HKU is furthering this effort by giving our internationally minded students greater opportunities for personal development, explorative risk-taking, and diverse learning experiences. HKU facilitates internships, work placements, and experiential learning through partnerships with industries, private sector organisations, charities and NGOs all over the world. The idea is for students to apply the knowledge they gain in classrooms to the real world.

HKU: Making an Impact

STUDENTS SAVING YOUNG LIVES: SOAP CYCLINGA non-profi t organisation largely operated by HKU student volunteers, Soap Cycling works with the hospitality industry to recycle and redistribute soap and other sanitation amenities to families and schools in disadvantaged communities around the world, particularly in Asia. The initiative helps curb the spread of diseases like diarrhoea and pneumonia by improving access to proper hygiene. Soap Cycling has the potential to save up to 1.5 million young lives every year. The project is managed by a different set of HKU students every semester. The students managed the successful launch of soap cycling’s expansion into the Mainland Chinese market in Shenzhen and are planning on tackling Singapore’s market next!

ADDRESSING MALNUTRITION IN SRI LANKA: BEHIND THE FAIR TRADE LABEL In partnership with Save the Children, 11 students from HKU’s Faculty of Social Sciences and the Department of Comparative Literature spent seven weeks on a Sri Lankan tea plantation to help improve child and maternal health. Students received one week of training to learn about the tea trade, and travelled to different tea estates to interview tealeaf pickers, plantations managers, and Sri-Lanka’s Tea Board. The project was a way for students to understand the ethical considerations behind the fair trade certifi cation. The next phase of the project will focus on child protection and dental oral health in cooperation with students from the Faculty of Dentistry.
