General Mariners should be aware that the appearance of data displayed in ECDIS may differ substantially from that of the equivalent paper chart. The paper chart is a fixed presentation; it is produced to a specific scale and the information within the area covered by the chart is portrayed in a way that ensures it is easily readable by the mariner. ECDIS provides a dynamic presentation where al l data loaded by the user is present but different settings determine which individual teatures are portrayed and how they are symbolised. The user builds up a picture of the ENC from individual options available on the ECOIS specific to their vessel , passage and preferences. Variations may occur in the way symbols display on different ECDIS.

Presentation Library ECDIS chart display is generated from the rules and symbols specified by the IHO S52 ECDIS Presentation standard and implemented by the manufacturer of the ECDIS. The library may be subsequently updated to include new symbology or improve the display of existing symbols. NP5012 is a description of the IHO's Presentation Library Edition 3.4 (published in 2008). Mariners should be aware that the presentation library is periodically updated and it is strongly recommended that systems are updated to the most recent version of IHO Standards to ensure all features are portrayed correctly.

The Presentation Library has several elements to it. It contains rules which determine which symbols to display for a given feature and its individual attributes. It specifies a minimum set of user settings to be made available on all ECDIS and also specifies how those user settings control some elements of the display. In this way, ENC chart display can be tailored to the individual requirements of the mariner and their vessel characterist ics. The Presentation Library also contains 'ECDIS Chart 1' which must be available in all systems and provides a reference set of the manufacturer's symbols for the ECDIS user. It should be noted that individual manufacturers may use the S-52 Presentation Library as a minimum standard and may enhance the appearance of certain symbols or use their own Presentation Library.
