Administrative Update As I walked through campus today during morning recess I was met by thesight of lovely little clusters of flowers and blooming bushes populated byequally lovely little clusters of giggling, happy children. It's such awonderful thing to be sitting in the warm sunshine with a group of friendssharing stories, laughter and making memories. As the standardized

  • testing wraps up we all breathe a collective sigh of relief and can nowfocus on the imminent arrival of summer - hurrah! When you next comeonto campus inhale deeply, as the scent of jasmine is absolutelyintoxicating and another reminder that we are near the finish line of anotherproductive and joyful school year.

The sound of ukuleles being played at recess is mixed with thoughtfulconversations by 8th graders about high school, their impending 8th gradeproject presentations and simply savoring their final weeks as WSSstudents. It is a bittersweet time for me as well as I walk through many finalexperiences. While watching the 2nd grade play I reflected on how manyWaldorf performances I've been privileged to observe and how integral thetheatre arts are to our curriculum and the development of well educatedstudents. We are so fortunate to have this curriculum available in the publicschool setting able to reach and serve so many students and families.

Many classes are now embarking on their culminating field trips - 7th gradewas in Ashland, Oregon last week taking in the widely renowned OregonShakespeare Festival performances and participating in drama workshopsas part of their Shakespeare experience. The 6th grade heads out toYosemite and will hike, camp, study mineralogy and enjoy the greatoutdoors. 5th grade is off to Jug Handle Creek farm and nature center onthe coast to study botany, history and enjoy time in nature.

It is also the time of tournaments and festivals. Our 5th graders participatedand competed in the Greek Games at Summerfield Waldorf School inSanta Rosa and the 6th grade will represent Woodland Star at this year'sMedieval Games. And, how about the incredible May Day/GrandparentsDay festivities of last week - it was our best ever and a great time was had

  • by all. It is a true honor to spend time with the elders in our communityanswering their questions about our school and curriculum and hearingtheir insights about education, children and life in general. Grandparentsreally loved seeing the children and classes in action and were touched bythe sweet simplicity of the day's highlight - dancing around a May Pole. I'msure it was resonant with some of their childhood experiences and theconnection between their experience and that of their grandchildren, wasan important touchstone for them with our community. We welcome moregrandparent involvement and were delighted when asked about putting ona Waldorf 101 course expressly for grandparents! The suggestion wasnoted and will be carried forward. Thank you again to the ParentAssociation and faculty for such a memorable day.

Although we have a mere two weeks left of our school year there is plentyof action and fun to engage in and we hope to see you at some or all ofthese events!

    Have a great week,Sheila
