Q2:  What if a student is attending but does not appear on the ODR? A2: Have the student report immediately to Student Services! This could indicate that the student is attending your course but has not registered nor paid for the course properly.

Q3:  Is there an option to individually select students to verify? A3:  No.  ODR is verified for the entire course only and not individual students.

Q4:  My classes have started and one class has an ODR link and the other does not. Why is that? A4: ODR is generated 24 hours AFTER the census date of the term and session.  If you teach multiple sessions over a term, you may have different census dates for each session. For example, in the list of Spring 2015 sessions below, the ODR Generation date is 24 hours after the census date.  The ODR link should appear to the faculty member in Faculty Center on the ODR Generation date. It appears that for this issue, one class has reached 24 hours after census date but the other has not.

Q5: When an instructor verifies the ODR and enters comments, is ODR going to keep these comments? Will the division be able to see the comments in case there is a question about attendance? A5: Yes, the comments are kept unless a new ODR is generated to replace the old ODR.

Q6:  Are students automatically dropped when their name and ID is listed in the comments section? A6: No, there are no “automatic” actions taken based on the comments (no one is dropped automatically). Instructors must submit paper forms to drop students from their courses.

Assessing Students Formative v. Summative Assessment As instructors, we assess student learning. But how often and how much is the assessment worth? There are two types of assessments that we can give our students: formative and summative. The table below provides a brief overview of these two types of assessment.

Formative Assessment Summative Assessment The goal is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve teaching.

The goal is to evaluate student learning at the end of a unit.

Low-stakes, or for a low point value – usually for a daily grade or not for a grade at all

High Stakes, or for a high point value – usually for a major grade

Even though the classes we teach are college-level courses, all of our assessments should not be summative. Formative assessments help students achieve success on summative assessments. Formative assessments can be given easily with or without technology. Below you will find strategies and tools that you can incorporate into your classes to assess student learning regularly.

No Tech Formative Assessment Techniques You can create several formative assessments using multi-colored cardstock. Each card/answer choice should be its own color so that it is easy for you to recognize student responses. Cards can be created using a table in Microsoft word. It is recommended that you use 2 columns and a font size greater than 48 when making cards.

• Multiple Choice Cards – Embed a multiple choice quiz into the middle of your lecture and askstudents to hold up the card that represents their answer to the question. Cards can be A-D andT and F (for True and False)

• Emojis – Students can use emoji cards to let you know how they feel about what you are teaching.Find an emoji for terms like “Got it,” “Almost Got it” and “Don’t Got it” and distribute themduring or after a lesson. Students hold up their card to let you know their level of understandingfor any topic.

• Head, Heart, Hand – Students can use these cards to reflect on the lesson. Students can chooseto write a sentence about what they learned (head), about how they feel after the lesson (heart),or about something they will take away (hand). The instructor can collect these as an exit ticket;these can also be used as entrance tickets if the instructor wants students to reflect on the previousday’s learning.

USING MULTIPLE CHOICE CARDS TO CREATE ENGAGING & INTERACTIVE PRESENTATIONS

1GROUP QUIZ

Give students a handout with questions and answers choices. Give students time to answer questions individually. Then, put students in small group (or with a partner) to discuss answers. Group/pair go

through all questions and answer choices and choose a group answer. As a class, go over each question. Groups hold up agreed on answer.

2REVIEW

MC Cards can be transformed into TOPIC cards and can be used to review/learn vocabulary terms and topics. For example, you can have a set of cards for the dimensions of GRIT, Logical Appeals, Learning

Styles, etc.

3INQUIRY BASED LESSON

Instead of presenting topics with facts, present them with questions. Introduce concepts with a quick “quiz” and then explain the concepts

based on how students answer the questions. Cards can also be used to encourage active learning by building in questions after teaching

each concept. lesson.

Low Tech Formative Assessment Techniques

If you are in a computer lab, can reserve laptops/chromebooks, or if students are permitted to use their mobile devices, you can do a quick assessment using one of these game-like applications. Each of these tools allows students to use their devices as a response tool. Each of the tools listed below makes the assessment competitive, which increases students’ engagement.

Low Tech Formative Assessment Tools

Universal Design for Learning

Lone Star College-Tomball is committed to student success. This is why we work toward making sure our classes are universally designed. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an approach to education that “eliminates barriers in learning and increases access to learning for all students.” Because all students learn in different ways, there are multiple ways that we should approach teaching, assessment, and engagement. There are three principles of UDL:

• Multiple Means of Representation - show the information you are teaching in different ways tomeet the learning needs of all students.

• Multiple Means of Action and Expression - provide options for students to express what theyknow.

• Multiple Means of Engagement - provide students with choices and challenges to help keep themengaged in learning.

Here are examples of how instructors apply the principles of UDL in their classes.

GOVT 2305: Basic Principles of GovernmentRepresentation Action and Expression Engagement

Create an infographic that illustrates system of checks and balances and separation of powers.

Create branches of government cards – 1 color for each branch. Give each student all three cards. Call out/display function of the government and have students hold up the branch of government responsible.

Allow students to choose one of the following activities: • Create a triangle shaped diagram that

lists the three branches and fill in realworld examples that explains theprinciple of checks and balances and tiein to some kind of media as an exampleof the branches acting on the others

• Create a Quizlet study set that hasseveral examples of the functions of eachbranch.

• Create an Adobe Spark Videosummarizing the branches of governmentand the functions.

ENGL 1301: Supporting Details Representation Action and Expression Engagement

Use advertisements (commercials or print advertisements) to show how marketers support the point they are making.

Give each group of students a bag of sentence strips. Each strip should have a different sentence on it. The bag should also contain the topic sentence, and this should be on a different color sheet of paper so that students can identify it quickly. Students’ task is to identify the correct supporting sentences for their assigned topic sentence. Sentences that do not support the topic sentence should be placed back in the bag.

Choose from one of the following: • Have students create a main idea

sentence and supporting detailstatements for a product that theylove (or hate). Have students write areview for a product that they recentlypurchased. Their point should besupported with solid supportingdetails.

• Create a Kahoot titled “Which ideadoesn’t belong” and have studentsidentify statements that do NOTsupport the topic sentence/thesis.

• Have students create a commercialusing Adobe Spark Video

Any course Using technology tool: Adobe Spark Post

Representation Action and Expression Engagement In addition to creating an assignment in MS Word, use one of the templates in Post to create a graphic that lets your students know what they should do on an upcoming assignment. Make sure you include instructions, due dates, and more, to create a visually appealing assignment sheet.

Students can demonstrate their understanding of the content you are teaching by creating a Post. With Post, students can really focus on what was important in the lesson because they will be limited to the amount of text they can include on a post.

Connect what students are learning to their preferred social media outlet. There are a variety of templates for creating a post; these templates mirror social media. For example, there is an Instagram template that you and your students can use to present an idea or concept.

GRIT MINDSET

At LSC-Tomball, grit and growth mindset are not just education buzzwords. It is who we are, and what we want our students to be. We can achieve this goal by making grit a part of the students' semester. In addition to the content you are teaching and the assignments connected to that content, we encourage faculty to embed these ideas into their curriculum.

Grit Reading List LSC-Tomball has used the following books in creating a campus-wide gritty culture. We recommend that you read the books in the order that they appear here.

• Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck• Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela

Duckworth • Grit: The New Science of What it Takes to Persevere,

Flourish, Succeed by Dr. Paul G. Stoltz

Weekly Grit Assignments Once you have an understanding of Grit and Growth Mindset, you are ready to begin embedding the concepts into your classroom. Visit the GGE Resources page (found at www.lonestar.edu/grit) for practical ways to include grit/growth mindset into your classes. Here are a few examples of the types of assignments:

• Have students complete Carol Dweck’s Mindset Quiz and Angela Duckworth’s GritScale after they watch an entire lesson on grit.

• Have students tell their grit stories using Adobe Spark Video.• Have students find real examples of grit or growth mindset and post those in a discussion or

share in class. Some examples include finding a news story, sharing a Facebook post, orwriting a summary of another person’s grit story.
