ELA 7 students have begun reading

Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl.

Students continue to use the 9-step

writing process reflecting on daily

journal questions such as “When

Anne takes her Star of David patch

off of her clothes, the shadow of the

star is still dyed into her clothing.”

Explore what this mean, symboli-

cally, for her to take her star off, on-

ly to still see it in her clothing. How

might this affect all parts of the

Jews; their possessions, minds,

emotions, culture, etc.? These piec-

es of writings are assessed using

Command of Evidence criteria from

the New York State Grade 6-8 Ex-

pository Writing Evaluation Rubric,

which is consistent throughout the middle school.

ABOVE: Trevor uses his text for evidence while using

the writing process in ELA.

ABOVE: Sara’s journal entry

Students in Mr. Schea’s 7th grade Social

Studies class learned about Henry “Box”

Brown, a slave who shipped himself North

to freedom. Students created origami box-

es, placed figures of themselves inside, and

mailed them to their homes representing

the trip from Richmond, Virginia, to Phila-

delphia, Pennsylvania. Students, upon re-

ceiving the mail, needed to reflect on sever-

al questions about what they learned about

“Box” Brown and the activity.

BELOW: Students Skyler, Alex, Hayden, Nathan, Kris, Dustin, and

Payton gather around the replica box measuring 3’X2’8”X2’ that

“Box” Brown spent 27 hours in gaining his freedom.

The 7th grade team has been busy

preparing for “Write On” week where

the district will be celebrating stu-

dents’ growth in their skills as critical

thinkers and writers from May 11-

May 18.

“Write On” will feature students’ se-

lected writing pieces from the 9 Step

Writing Process, students’ self-

assessments of their writing growth,

and Authors’ Statements about their

selected pieces. Students

also will use the New

York State Grades 6-8 Ex-

pository Writing Evalua-

tion Rubric to self-assess

their writing.

ABOVE: The writer’s author statement explains why we picked a particular piece of

writing to showcase.

BELOW: Mari uses a writing

rubric to self-assess her writ-

ing.

ATTENTION: Due to unused emergency days, there will be no school on Friday, May 20th

and Friday, May 27th.

Congratulations to all the students who participated

in the 2016 New York State School of Music Associa-

tion (NYSSMA) solo festival, which took place Friday,

April 15th

. Students from the Addison Middle/High

School prepared and performed solos, scales and/or

rudiments, and sight reading for a grade. This festival

is a great experience for our students, as it encour-

ages good practicing habits as well as gives them an

opportunity to play for a judge. Each student received

a numerical evaluation and comments from the

judge. All of the students received an Excellent or

Good on their solo. ACSD is very proud of Catherine

Flint, Kim Pierson, Xin Mei Zheng, John Stierly, Kassie

Webb, Paige Boutelle, Sara Stierly, and Tabitha Ham-

mond.

The Addison Central School District is holding a Ribbon Cutting Cere-

mony to acknowledge

the completion of Phase II of our capital construction project. School officials will hold a ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 12th in front of the

Addison Middle School entrance (backup rain location will be inside one of our new

spaces). The district's two new additions will be featured in this ceremony.

Next week's event is open to the public and will include an opening ceremony with guest

speakers, building tours, and light refreshments.

Although the buildings have been open for a period of time, we believe it is appropriate to take a moment to acknowledge what

our community has built. The ceremony will include brief remarks from students, a board member, our mayor, and other guest

speakers. Additional members in attendance will include our design team members, the architect, our construction manager and

others involved in this project. It is also a moment to acknowledge the community and the support shown as we went from ideas

generated by the Facilities Committee and BOE to the vote to groundbreaking to construction to completion.

Examples of the new additions that are being highlighted include the new STEM and Art classrooms, larger state-of-the-art

classrooms, the Event Center and Event lobby entrance and the Fitness Center. These are areas in our middle school and high

school that we really want our community to see. Some of these new areas are allowing learning in an atmosphere we only

dreamed about years ago!
