Newly appointed District Governor Graham wasted no time in get-

ting going with visiting clubs. Accompanied on the Trip by Janet the

first visit was to the Rotary Club of Nhulunbuy on the Gove Penin-

sula. Flying out from Cairns on Friday 1st July, they were met by

Steve and Dee Castelli who generously provided home hospitality

for the three nights. President Barry Fleming and the other Rotari-

ans put a on a great night for the official visit on Saturday 2nd July

with the town manager and other Friends of Rotary attending. On the

Saturday, Steve and Dee took Graham and Janet on a four wheel

drive trip into Arnhem Land. On Saturday President Barry and Kay

showed them around town with a scrumptious lunch at the Nhulunbuy

Golf Club. The Rotary Club of Nhulunbuy is only small but make

some big things happen in their town including a beach volleyball

competition that raises tens of thousands.

end the DG walked away

14 for 14 Membership Seminars have now been conducted by PDG Phil Dempster in Cairns, Townsville

and Darwin. The support has been fantastic with attendees contributing significantly to the dia-

logue. Clubs need to increase the membership of their clubs and a target has been set to in-

crease the size of membership across the district to 1200 by the end of this Rotary year, 1300 by

the end of 2012-13 and 1400 by the end of 2013-14. It is up to all of us to find good candidates

for our clubs. One of the best options for clubs to focus on membership, I feel is the Five to One

Plan (see next page) where you divide the club in to teams of 4 or 5 people to compete with each

other to find and induct new Rotarians. They are out there, they are just waiting to be asked. Re-

member PDG Phil has some very nice bottles of wine for those who meet the challenge.

On Saturday 9th July DG Graham and Janet visited the

Rotary Club of Mossman for their official visit. President

Theo Schlub conducted an excellent meeting and it

was indeed a pleasure for Graham to help with induct-

ing two new members. The meeting was well attended

with President Tony Dickinson and Secretary Arnie

Edelberg of the Rotary Club of Port Douglas also at-

tended.

At the recent Cairns North Changeover Carol

Mayer was granted Honorary Membership of the

club by President Graham Reveleigh. Carol is a

truly unique person who is an inspiration to all be-

cause of her positive attitude to life following being

subjected to severe burns some years ago. The

club has been a great support to Carol and even

lead a team of people to build her and her son a

home. Well done Cairns North!

Five for One Plan

It is each member’s responsibility to propose a new member for club membership.

In an effort to promote fellowship and capitalize on each member’s professional

contacts, a method to encourage and engage all Rotarians in identifying new

members is the Five for One Plan. This method was widely used by Rotary clubs

in the 1970’s.

Description of the Five for One Plan:

1. A club is divided into teams of five members each, and the teams are

given names or numbers to identify them.

Each team:

2. Is assigned the responsibility to identify and recruit at least one new

member during a particular month of the Rotary year to ensure a

continuous flow of new members.

3. Is asked to identify several prospective members and then to recruit at

least one of them for approval and induction during the committee’s

assigned month.

4. Is encouraged to complete every step of the new member process, from

the initial call or discussion to interest a person in Rotary, to issuing an

invitation for membership, to ensure the prospective member becomes an

active and engage member of the club.

An effective use of the Five for One Plan could produce a membership increase

of 20% for the club during the Rotary year. However, the normal attrition rate for

Rotary clubs is 10% per year, so the plan could effectively produce a net gain of 10% membership growth.

On Tuesday 19th July DG Graham and Janet accompanied by AG

Layne Gardiner made an official visit to two Cairns Clubs at the Hotel

Cairns. At 7am they visited DG Graham’s home club being the Rotary

Club of Cairns Sunrise, where they were well received by the club.

Janet has a reputation for winning raffles, so President Brett Charles

said lets not waste time and presented Janet with a very nice set of

baking dishes. That evening they arrived again to enjoy the friendship

of the Rotary Club of Cairns. DG Graham has a long connection with

the Rotary Club of Cairns as he was a member back in the late 1980s.

His maternal grandfather, Roy Browne was also a member in the

1930s. President Bob McGill ran a well organised meeting with Graham

and Janet being made very welcome.

DG Graham and Janet flew to Alice Springs on Wednesday 20th July and then drove 508 kms

the next day to visit the Rotary Club of Tennant Creek. Tennant Creek is one of the smallest

clubs in our district and one of the most isolated but the club is very involved in the community

and is primed to increase membership.

WHY SUPPORT AUSTRALIAN ROTARY HEALTH?

In recent times Rotary clubs have been called upon to respond to natural disasters at home and around the world. Such support is nothing short of magnificent with the provision of financial aid, donations in kind, Disaster Aid and Shelter Boxes.

We are constantly reminded to support the Rotary Foundation, our own charity that does so much good in the world.

With so much expectation required of clubs, one of the most pressing problems facing humanity is sometimes forgotten – the problem of mental well being.

Schizophrenia, depression, epilepsy, dementia, alcohol dependence and other mental, neurological and substance-use disorders constitute 13% of the global burden of disease surpassing both cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Depression is the third leading contributor to the global disease burden, and alcohol and illicit drug use account for more than 5% .

Every seven seconds, someone develops dementia, costing the world up to US$609 billion in 2009. By 2020, an estimated 1.5 million peo-ple will die each year by suicide, and between 15 and 30 million will make the attempt.

The absence of cures, and the dearth of preventive interventions for these disor­ders, in part reflects a limited understanding of the brain and its molecular and cellular mechanisms. Where there are effective treat­ments, they are frequently not available to those in great-est need.

This year, when considering your activities, please remember the contribution made by one of Rotary’s most important multi district programs. Australian researchers rely upon ARH to provide the means to find cures for mental diseases. Please remember and sup-port the vital work of Australian Rotary Health.

with a Paul Harris Fellowship.

John and Lyn Palamountain accompanied DG Graham and Janet on their official

visit to The Rotary Club of Darwin South. DG Graham was called on to recognise

Peter Fowler and Ross Springolo with Paul Harris Fellowships. PDG Joanne Schil-

ling was also awarded an Avenues of Service Citation. The club is committed to

Purpose: Recognizing that the strength of the Rotary ideal is founded on the service carried out by club members worldwide, this citation

program provides a means for Rotary clubs to personally recognize a member of the club for outstanding efforts in the five Avenues of Ser-

vice. The citation commends the service carried out by an individual Rotarian in the club, thereby reinforcing the importance which Rotary

places on the personal involvement of each club member in Rotary service activities.

Selection Process: The method of selection is to be determined by the club president. Club presidents may wish to appoint a special commit-

tee to select a nominee, or may ask their board of directors to carry out this responsibility. Club nominations are to be submitted by the club

president to Rotary International, with an information copy to the district governor.

Eligibility: • The nominee must have consistently demonstrated support of the Object of Rotary through participation in service activities in

each of the five Avenues of Service: Club, Vocational, Community, International, and New Generations.

• An individual may only receive this award once.• The nominee must be an active Rotarian in good standing.

The Rotary Club of Dili, Timor Leste

DG Graham and Janet had a wonderful evening visiting the Rotary Club of Dili. President Toni Favaro had ensured

there was a good attendance of Rotarians, Rotaractors and visitors. Among the visitors were Kirsty Sword Gusmao,

wife of the Prime Minister of Timor Leste as well as the Ambassador for the United States of America, Mrs Judith

Fergin, who is well known to our district as she was a guest at our Townsville district conference in 2010. DG

Graham was called upon to assist with the induction of Marie Sardi and the presentation of a well deserved Paul

Harris Fellowship to Rotarian Paul Greystone who is a very active and reliable member of the club. DG Graham has

seen some of the venues for the 2014 District Conference in 2014 and With the hard work Dili club is putting in, we

can be guaranteed of a top rate conference in Dili in 2014.
