Magazine CoverDescription:The assignment was to create a magazine cover with me as the subject, using sound design principles.

Date: September 28, 2016

Course/Instructor:Comm 130Sara Tranberg

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe IllustratorAdobe PhotoshopAdobe InDesign

Objectives:Learn layouts, alignment, color, repetition, contrast

Process: The process was first to read all about the FOCUS principles. Then I sketched out what I wanted to have my magazine look like. Then I set up a shape map on the computer to roughy lay out where my elements would go. Then I took a thousand pictures of myself (most of them making the B reel) and laid out my elements in a draft. I then got some critiques from class mates and my instruc-tor, along with my family in person. I asked them to really be honest, it doesn’t help me to play it safe; and they brought down the hammer! Then I made my final adjustments to the margin alignment, changed some of the text size I felt didn’t make a good impact. Removed some elements and generally cleaned it all up. Below are my sketches and shape map that I used in my process working towards my final layout.

PreziDescription:Design a Prezi as an instructional way to show its capabilities to a client.

Date: October 05, 2016

Course/Instructor:Comm 130Sara Tranberg

Program(s)/Tools: PreziAdobe Illustrator

Objectives:Learn typography, contrast, design principles

Process: I used Prezi in the past so I was vaguely familiar with it, and I remember it being a bit of a pain to use. I was correct and it took me some time to watch tutorials and get up to speed with the program. I thought about dirt bikes because my son likes them and I was tinkering in AI on my background and found the shape I liked. When I put them together I thought it looked like a tire tread from a dirt bike. I tried to keep all the pictures in the same green tint as the background, repeated the text colors, highlighting the key words in the similar green as the background. I aligned the text to the image and kept the font size the same throughout.

PhotoDesignDescription:Use the tools like photoshop and illustrator to create a cohesive color scheme with image and color.

Date: October 12, 2016

Course/Instructor:Comm 130Sara Tranberg

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe PhotoshopAdobe Illustrator

Objectives:Learn layouts, hierarchy, contrast, type

Process: I liked the primary color scheme, red, yellow and blue. I took pictures of a couple of lego pieces I saw the kids had laying around. I put the image of Emmet into photoshop and pulled him from the background. I placed him on a black background and he popped in contrast. I put some lines, I like straight lines in my designs, and used the primary color scheme. Posting it to facebook, I saw it was terrible. Everyone was nice to say the good parts, but I knew the design was crap. I thought long and hard about what should be in this image, then it hit me, legos! I needed to create a lego backdrop for him. I went into AI and created the lego background from simple shapes and placed the elements. I tweaked the text and added the swatches, which I though was clever to do as little 2X1 lego blocks.

MontageDescription:Using blend techniques, create a spiritual based image using multiple images.

Date: October 19, 2016

Course/Instructor:Comm 130Sara Tranberg

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Learn filters, masking, clipping and layering

Process: I started the process by looking at images and thinking of what I want to do. I knew that I wanted to use the Christus picture and I have always loved the San Diego temple, so that was easy too. I remember seeing an image of a temple in the clouds and I thought it was neat so I wanted to replicate that idea. I grabbed three images and I was lucky to find a great grass and sky picture as my base. I blended in the temple to the clouds, then overlayed the Savior, blending Him and also reducing his ‘fill’ so that He was see through. I also placed a dove in the top left corner as well to signify His baptism. I wanted ‘dreamy’ looking text, soft and flowing to imply soft and classy.

Business Identitylogos, business card, and letterhead

Description:Create letter head, business cards with my own logo that I created.

Date: October 26, 2016

Course/Instructor:Comm 130Sara Tranberg

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:Learn to create a business identity for a client

Process: I jotted down some ideas. I created a back hoe picture, it was pretty sweet. I found a font that I really liked on TK. I wanted to have graph paper as my back ground on the letter head and I brought it along to the business cards. Every-one liked the back hoe vs. the other ideas.

Course/Instructor:Comm 130Sara Tranberg

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:Learn to make a lot of information easy to digest with visuals.Learn how to leverage AI to make icons.

Process: I started with the hardest part, coming up with a research subject. I chose my iTunes. I went through my iTunes and gathered the data I thought was inter-esting. I created my sketches and ended up using parts of both sketch ideas.4. I created my icons and rough layout in AI. I took my feedback from class and instructor and created my final version. I got rid of the column graph and came up with more icons.

CodingDescription:Create a website based on my business logo using HTML/CSS.

Date: November 09, 2016

Course/Instructor:Comm 130Sara Tranberg

Program(s)/Tools: HTMLCSS

Objectives:Learn to code in HTML and apply formatting using CSS.

Process: I used the logo from my business logo project as my starting point. I wanted to keep the same colors as in my logo but also expand on them so I found complimentary colors using the Adobe color wheel website. I knew that I wanted to find out a way to make my bullet points better than just numbers or dots, so I Googled a way to get stars in the code. I knew that I wanted nav links but since I don’t really have 4 other pages they are just for show. I should have just relinked them to the home page. I wanted to add more to the page itself, as my critique was “too much whitespace”, but if I added something I didn’t like the layout so I went with “too much whitespace”.

Web Page MockupDescription:Layout a website using the 960 grid idea for the web developers to follow.

Date: November 16, 2016

Course/Instructor:Comm 130Sara Tranberg

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Learn to make a wireframe.Learn how to create a webpage on a gridLearn how to apply FOCUS principles

Process: I started with my logo and I wish I had varied the colors a little more, would give me something more to work with. I wish that I could change that, but it is what it is. I took that logo and wanted to have awesome pictures of homes and design centers to sell the business and what they can do. I needed to vary the heading rectangle colors, the red was just too much when put all over the screen so I found a complimentary color on the Adobe color wheel and went with it. I like the pop of color it brings. I used photoshop exclusively and it’s annoying. I like AI better but I do like some of what photoshop can do for images.
