  • 9. Acts 21:1, Miletus To Tyre Acts 21:1-3 After we had torn ourselves away from them, we put out to sea and sailed straight to Cos. The next day we went to Rhodes and from there to Patara. 2 We found a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, went on board and set sail. 3 After sighting Cyprus and passing to the south of it, we sailed on to Syria. We landed at Tyre, where our ship was to unload its cargo.
  • 10. Acts 21:1, Miletus To Tyre
  • 11. Acts 21:4, Through The Spirit Acts 21:4 Finding the disciples there, we stayed with them seven days. Through the Spirit they urged Paul not to go on to Jerusalem. Acts 20:22-23 "And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. 23 I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. A contradiction? Acts 21:14 When he would not be dissuaded, we gave up and said, "The Lord's will be done."
  • 12. Acts 21:4, Through The Spirit Paul was within Gods will; Acts 23:1 Paul looked straight at the Sanhedrin and said, "My brothers, I have fulfilled my duty to God in all good conscience to this day." Acts 23:11 The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, "Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome."
  • 13. Acts 21:5, On The Beach We Knelt To Pray
  • 14. Acts 21:10-11, A Prophet Named Agabus Acts 21:10-11 a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11 Coming over to us, he took Paul's belt, tied his own hands and feet with it and said, "The Holy Spirit says, 'In this way the Jews of Jerusalem will bind the owner of this belt and will hand him over to the Gentiles.'" A prophecy, not a discouragement. Acts 20:22 And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there.
  • 15. Acts 21:18, James, And All The Elders Acts 21:18 The next day Paul and the rest of us went to see James, and all the elders were present. James, the lords brother, didnt believe until post resurrection.
  • 16. Acts 21:18-28, Peacemakers This is a good example of Biblical conflict resolution. They all came together to discuss the problem and find a solution; 18 Paul James, and all the elders were present. 19 ..he greeted them, he began to relate 20 they heard it [the problem] the Jewsbelievedzealous for the Law; 21 you are teaching all the Jewsto forsake Moses, 22 "What, then, is to be done? [resolution presented] 23do this that we tell youfour menunder a vow; 24 take them and purify yourself [defuse the problem by showing them youre]keeping the Law. 25 "But concerning the Gentiles who have believed [this does not change doctrine, theyre steadfast on that] 26 Then Paul [receives the suggestion, and does it]
  • 17. Acts 21:23, Peacemakers NAU Acts 21:23 "Therefore do this that we tell you. We have four men who are under a vow; NAU Matthew 5:9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. NAU Romans 12:18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. The problem is about religious practice or not to practice (Rom 14). We have extreme freedom in Christ (1 Corinthians 10:25-29, Galatians 5:1-16) and can decide how we want to worship. The problem is not about doctrine like in Galatians 2. Paul would have fought to the death if this was about the gospel, soteriology, Christology, etc..
  • 18. Acts 21:23, Acts Is A Transition Book NAU Acts 21:23We have four men who are under a vow; Acts 18:18 Paulhad his hair cut off at Cenchrea because of a vow he had taken. Matt 5:36-37 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. James 5:12 Above all, my brothers, do not swear not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let your "Yes" be yes, and your "No," no, or you will be condemned.
  • 19. Acts 21:24, Living In Obedience To The Law Acts 21:24 Take these men, join in their purification rites and pay their expenses, so that they can have their heads shaved. Then everybody will know there is no truth in these reports about you, but that you yourself are living in obedience to the law. Paul taught the Gentiles that circumcision and Jewish customs were religiously irrelevant. Paul never taught the Gentiles, or the Jews, to disregard Jewish customs or to not circumcise. 1 Cor 9:20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law.
  • 20. Acts 21:24, Living In Obedience To The Law Acts 21:22-24 Paul was not denying the finished work of Christ by offering animal sacrifices. The epistles Paul had already written by this time (Gal., 1 and 2 Thes., 1 and 2 Cor., Rom.) make it clear that such a denial was incomprehensible. He must have looked on these sacrifices as memorials. After all, this will be the significance of millennial sacrifices (Ezek 43:18-46:24; Mal 1:11; 3:3-4). (6) Paul later asserted he did not violate his own conscience (Acts 23:1). Bible Knowledge Commentary
  • 21. Acts 21:25, The Gentile Believers Acts 21:25 As for the Gentile believers, we have written to them our decision that they should abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality."
  • 22. Acts 18:18, Paul Was Keeping A Vow NAU Acts 18:18 Paul, having remained many days longer, took leave of the brethren and put out to sea for Syria, and with him were Priscilla and Aquila. In Cenchrea he had his hair cut, for he was keeping a vow. NAU Deuteronomy 23:21 "When you make a vow to the LORD your God, you shall not delay to pay it, for it would be sin in you, and the LORD your God will surely require it of you. I believe Paul is absolutely committed to get to Jerusalem to offer that hair, and complete his vow.
  • 23. Acts 21:26, Paul Offered A Sacrifice NAU Acts 21:26 Then Paul took the men, and the next day, purifying himself along with them, went into the temple giving notice of the completion of the days of purification, until the sacrifice was offered for each one of them. NAU Acts 16:3 Paul wanted this man [Timothy] to go with him; and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those parts, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. [This was after the Acts 15, Jerusalem Council]
  • 24. Keep The Law, Or Not? Gentile Religious Ritual Do not have to keep the law, but can if they want to. Either way matters not concerning our position before God. Our righteousness is in Christ. Salvation is by grace through faith alone. Jewish Religious Ritual Do not have to keep the law, but can if they want to. Either way matters not concerning our position before God. Our righteousness is in Christ. Salvation is by grace through faith alone.
  • 25. Acts 21:28, The Dividing Wall Of Hostility Acts 21:28he has brought Greeks into the temple area and defiled this holy place. Eph 2:14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, Bible Knowledge Commentary, These warned Gentiles they would have themselves to blame for their deaths which would certainly ensue if they would proceed beyond the barrier (cf. Eph 2:14). So deep was this feeling that the Romans gave permission to Jews to fulfill this death sentence, even if the intruder was a Roman citizen.

  • 27. Acts 21:37, Paul Knows Greek And Hebrew At Least NAU Acts 21:37 As Paul was about to be brought into the barracks, he said to the commander, "May I say something to you?" And he said, "Do you know Greek? NAU Acts 21:40 When he had given him permission, Paul, standing on the stairs, motioned to the people with his hand; and when there was a great hush, he spoke to them in the Hebrew dialect, saying,
  • 28. TODAY'S CREATION MOMENT WHAT LANGUAGES DID JESUS SPEAK? John 7:35b "will He go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?" What languages did Jesus speak during His ministry on Earth? Of course He spoke Aramaic, since that was the common language of the people He taught. When He read from Isaiah in the synagogue in Nazareth, He would have read it in Hebrew. But did Jesus also speak Greek? Greek was in common use in Israel in the first century. Greek inscriptions are frequently found in Jewish graves from the period. This is evidence that many Jews knew the Greek language. Some scholars point to some of the terms in Jesus' recorded
  • 29. TODAY'S CREATION MOMENT WHAT LANGUAGES DID JESUS SPEAK? sayings that have Greek origins; however, their arguments are not universally accepted. But Jesus did grow up in Nazareth, which is in "Galilee of the Gentiles," where Greek as well as Aramaic would have been spoken. Nazareth was only an hour's walk from Sepphoris, where one would have to speak Greek to do business. As scholars point out, Jesus was educated and as a carpenter, He was a skilled artisan. He would have to speak Greek to deal with customers. At one point His disciples wondered whether He would go to teach the Gentiles, a task that would require Greek. Language is a gift of God. It is through this gift that God gives us the greater gift of His saving Gospel which assures us of the forgiveness of sins through Jesus Christ.
  • 30. Acts 13:8, is translated? NAU Acts 13:8 But Elymas the magician (for so his name is translated) was opposing them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith. Elumas, Origin: of Ara. or Arab. or. What languages did Jesus, and the apostles speak, read, and transact business in? Greek, Aramaic, Hebrew, for sure; NAU John 19:20 Therefore this inscription many of the Jews read, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and in Greek. 21 And so the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews'; but that He said, 'I am King of the Jews.'" Ezr. 4:7, 18, Matt. 1:23, Mk. 5:41, 15:22, 34, Jn. 1:38, 41-42, 9:7, Acts 4:36, 9:36, 13:8, 21:37, 40

"...The inscriptional and literary evidence reflects a reality not unlike what we find with the Dead Sea Scrolls. Of the 700 non-biblical texts from the Qumran library, 120 are in Aramaic and 28 in Greek, while 550 scrolls were written in Hebrew.... Author: R.
