In Kalindi College premises there was a lecture on 27th July 2018 by Mukesh Kalwani on the topic of
“Ban Plastic, Save Environment” in the Journalism Department. The session was very interesting and
information was very useful and beneficial for the students. Mr. Kalwani told the students about the
hazards of plastic in daily life. He told that in India everyone uses plastic in daily life. We should take
initiative for plastic ban. Kalindi College is the first to ban plastic in its premises. The students were
more interested in the session because Mr. Kalwani provided many useful information and also
discussed the laws related to environment.
The students asked question about recycling and the alternate of pastic and he gave answers students
were very satisfied. In the lecture Mr. Kalwani gave many nations’ examples that have banned plastic
and those nation use alternate for the plastic. He told that India generates 5.6 million metric tons of
plastic waste annually. There are plastic recycling companies but in them there is more pollution. In
India, Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation began a drive under the Smart City Initiative to
introduce bio-bags that could serve as a plastic alternative. The bags are known to be soluble in water
and decompose within 3-4 months.
He also told that currently, cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Karwar, Tirumala, Vasco, Rajasthan,
Kerala, Punjab and now Madhya Pradesh to name a few have imposed a ban on plastic bags. But its
enforcement and effective implementation is an issue. The lecture given by Mr. Mukesh Kalwani was
very helpful in understanding plastic ban and its hazards.

August, 2018
A screening of the film, “Triumph of the Will” was held on 14th
August 2018 for third year journalism
students as part of their curriculum of the paper, “Global Media and Politics”. The film is a
documentary and propaganda film by the German filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl that chronicles the 1934
Nazi Party Congress in Nuremberg. It contains many impressive scenes, but perhaps none more
powerful than the scene in which Hitler, Himmler, and the new SA leader, Viktor Lutze, walk down a
wide aisle in the centre of Nuremberg stadium flanked on either side by gigantic formations of Nazis in
perfectly aligned columns.
The screening helped the students in understanding how films and other media was used for the

4. Visit to a Photo Exhibition: Portraits of a Life in Exile Through Changing
Viewfinders - August 24, 2018
To commemorate the World Day of Photography, Journalism Department of Kalindi College organized
a visit to a photo exhibition for the students on 24th of August 2018 under the supervision of faculty
members Miss. Ritika Pant and Mr. Ezra John.
The exhibition at the Visual Arts Gallery, India Habitat Centre was titled: "Nirvasanama: Portraits of a
Life in Exile Through Changing Viewfinders”. It was an exhibition of vintage cameras and turn-of-the-
century images that throw light upon the life of a former Nepalese Prime Minister, Dev Shumsher Rana
traced through Bhuvan Kumari Devi Archive.
As students gazed at the century-old restored portraits, celebrated photographer and visual historian,
Mr Aditya Arya of the India Photo Archive Foundation came forward to explain in detail. He
described: “This photo archive is of a family whose grandfather was one of Nepal's most liberal Prime
Minister. He served for only 144 days before his brothers exiled him. These photographs portray the
journey of the family from Nepal to Mussoorie and their lives thereafter.”
Students intently glanced at a rare collection of antique cameras that date back to the 19th century
when photography was formally introduced accompanied by restored negatives of the many portraits.
One of the uncaptioned portrait photographs there sited of a complex series of interactions: “aesthetics,
cultural and ideological,” it represented that portrait hovers between opposing terms of meanings.
These representations further initiated talks among students about the question of what constitutes a
“portrait” to begin with.
Moreover, a nineteenth-century photographic studios type that relied on daylight for illumination was
also recreated for students to have a clear idea about old-days-illuminating-practices. “To capture as
much light as possible and keep exposure times to a minimum, they had glass roofs and walls. Also,
moveable blinds and curtains allowed the photographer to control the amount and direction of light,”
Mr Arya further elucidated.
