An informative assembly was held at our high school. Sherri CarrBevis from the Secretary of State’s office talked about the electionprocess in Mississippi. Then representatives from 4 different politicalparties spoke about their party’s beliefs and candidates.

As part of the “Promote the Vote” program, HA Students participatedin a mock voter registration and later in a mock election (only forthose who registered). Students at the elementary school and highschool registered and voted.

HA Students Inducted into Honor SocietiesEach year HA holds a fall induction ceremony to welcome new members into our Jr. High & High School Beta Club,National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Quill & Scroll and MAIS Honorary Societies. Congratulations to these and

other students not pictured who were inducted into one or more honoraries.

Senior Literacy Project: Making a DifferenceCLASS OF 2017 SENIORS ARE PROMOTING LITERACY IN OUR COMMUNITY

Various components of this project will take place throughout the year!

Seniors held a fundraiser at Lost Pizza on Oct. 25 and raised$502.80 to help fund their Senior Literacy Project. Thanks toeveryone who came out and supported them!

HA Seniors recently helped students at Franklin Academy byproviding supplies and helping them design their reading boards foran upcoming reading fair.

RED RIBBON WEEK - as part of our High School AssemblySeries, David Duett spoke to our 5th - 12th grade studentsabout his experience with drugs & alcohol and how his lifechanged when he let God into his life. This 1982 HA graduatenow gives back to our community in many ways includingcoaching and umpiring several sports and helping familieswhose lives have been touched by drugs & alcohol.

Stressed? Trey Skaggs, Youth Minister at First United MethodistChurch in Columbus, gave an excellent and inspiring talk to ourstudents and faculty about stress in their lives - and how to deal withit! This was part of our High School Assembly Series. Theassemblies typically deal with important issues that middle school andhigh school students are facing.

School Level Spelling Bee Winners Eighth Grade Attends Career Expo

Mrs. Toni Wise, Middle School Spelling Bee Sponsor congratulates Anne Clark Shepherd (8th grade) and Ayden Mitchell(7th grade) for winning the school level bee for their respectivegrades. Each will advance to theMAIS District and the Lowndes County District Spelling Bees.

HA 8th grade students attended the “Imagine the Possibilities CareerExpo” in Tupelo, MS. This was a great way for students to explorevarious career options. At theexpo, they ran into HA Alum, David Beall (‘97) at the Caterpillardisplay!

Hazard Lecture Series - Celebrates 25 years!Thanks to the Hazard family for the many, many excellent and varied programs

they have brought to our students and the community since 1992!

Thanks to Dr. Art Cox (HA’84) our guest speaker for the first HazardLecture this year. Dr. Cox discussed "Innovations in Medicine:Emerging Techniques in Facial Surgery". His excellent presentationalso included career advice, a reminder that it is never too late tofollow your dreams and the importance of giving back to thecommunity. We had a huge turnout of students and adults - and manyof those in attendance enjoyed visiting with Dr. Cox afterwards!

THE HAZARD LECTURE SERIES concluded with Ms. MargaretMary Henry's unique perspective on Russia in "A Window onRussia: A Local Scholar Reports." The MSMS Educator shared herinsight and many of her travel experiences with a "full house"consisting of area citizens and students from Heritage Academy andMSMS. She captivated our audience with her amazing stories and knowledge of Russia!

FAFSA - parents of Seniors were invited to attend aFAFSA workshop to learn how to apply for federalscholarships.

Did you know?In the 2015-2016 school year, our 36 Seniors wereoffered over $4.3 million in scholarships!

College Fair - each year HA hosts this event to give students in 10th -12th grades the opportunity to learn more about college life, requirementsfor admissions, scholarships and much more! Seniors dressed inprofessional business attire. The Senior parents provided lunch for theSeniors and the recruiters. ___________________________________________________________

Side note: 100% of our Senior Class is typically college bound!

The 2015-2016 yearbook, the Heritor, was dedicated to Mrs. Martha ClaireFitzner, Coach Tate Marsh and Mrs. Libby Springer who all passed away in recentmonths. Each of these professionals/friends made a lasting impression on our studentsand staff. HA Elementary and High School Swimmers competed in the43rd Annual MAIS Swim Championships held at the CourthouseRacquet & Fitness Center in Flowood, MS. HA had several highfinishes and Thomas Chain (10th gr) set a meet record in the 50breaststroke! Great job, HA Swim Team!

HA School Level Spelling Bee - winners in the ElementaryGrade Level Spelling Bee held recently included: 2nd from left- Sarah Irvin (4th), Lathan Dunbar-Keys (5th) and Chloe Barr(6th). They are pictured with Mrs. Cindy Wamble, ElementaryPrincipal, Mrs. Vicki Hardy (HA Spelling Bee Coordinator) andHunter Perrigin (10th) who was the pronouncer for the bee.

MAIS DISTRICT SPELLING BEE - Congrats to Chloe Barr, 2ndfrom right who placed 2nd in the 6th grade MAIS District SpellingBee. Other HA winners included Lathan Dunbar-Keys who placed3rd in the 5th grade district bee and Sarah Irvin who placed 3rd inthe 4th grade district bee. Each will advance to the MAIS StateSpelling Bee in January.

Heritage Elementary Book Fair -a big success!

Thanks to all our parents who helped with set up, who volunteeredduring the sale and who came to shop at ourrecent book fair!

Our profit from the book fair was over $2,500 which will be used tobuy more great books for our readers!

2nd Grade “Dot” Day Field Trip to Science Carnival

After listening to the books The Dot and You are Special, our2nd grade students colored "magic" dot sheets. Then theycovered themselves in dots and searched for "dot" shapes onour campus. They took pictures of those shapes with iPads.Back in the classroom, Augmented Reality created a magicalmoment as the colored dots on their paper transformed into a4D object on the projector screen that could walk, move, turnand fly because of the coded dots on the pages! What fun towatch! Thanks, Mrs. Janet Lewis for a great “Dot Day”!

Happy Birthday, Mississippi! Several of ourclasses visited Mississippi’s Bicentennial Exhibitrecently. The exhibit included two ofMississippi's most significant artifacts - theoriginal 1817 Mississippi constitution and the1818 United States flag that flew over the nationafter Mississippi became a state.

HA Alum Publishes First Book Congratulations to Donna Pannell Bain (HA ‘89) who recently published herfirst book! She recently donated a copy of the book she wrote and illustrated“My Best Friend Without Hair” to Kay Ellis, HA Elementary School Librarian(HA ’75).

This book is about a child with cancer who is made fun of because of his baldhead. It will appeal to children who are bullied because of a disease or disability.
