Raising Awareness of the Exceptional Family Member Program

The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) is a mandatory enrollment program that works with other military and civilian agencies to provide comprehensive and coordinated community support, housing, educational, medical, and personnel services to families with special needs. The objective of the EFMP is to assess, document, and code the special education and medical needs of eligible family members and forward these coded needs to military personnel for consideration during assignment process.

Benefits of the program include consideration of the medical needs of the EFM during the assignment process and assignment of Soldiers to areas where medical and special education needs can be accommodated, provided there is a valid personnel requirement for the Soldier’s grade and specialty. If you think you might have a Family Member that is eligible for services, here’s a quick and easy way to determine if they may qualify for EFMP enrollment. If any question below is answered “yes”, please contact the Army Community Service EFMP Office. 1. Special education services that are specified on an Individual Education Plan or Early Intervention Services specified on and Individual Family Service Plan. 2. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder/Attention Deficit Disorder

requiring intensive management by any provider. 3. Any diagnosis requiring medical care above the level normally provided by a Family Practitioner in an outpatient clinic setting 4. Potentially life-threatening conditions or conditions requiring intensive follow-up support within the past 5 years. 5. Chronic outpatient or impatient mental health treatment within the past 5 years. Enrollment in EFMP does not adversely affect selection for promotion, school or assignment. Additionally, information concerning enrollment in EFMP or any data used in the program is not made available to local or DA promotion or school selection boards.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and together, we can take a stand. Army Community Service Family Advocacy Program is sponsoring WALK The TALK in an effort to raise awareness on Ft. Huachuca. We have learned that many victims are discouraged or feel hopeless without a strong support network advocating for them. WALK THE TALK is designed to create a supportive statement – “We do care.” SAVE THE DATE: Please join us on 27 October 2016 when we meet at Barnes Field House between 0900 to 1200 to stand in solidarity to end domestic violence. This is your chance to be part of the solution as you walk the track, gather information and post an inspirational or encouraging message on our survivor board. Our WALK THE TALK theme is 3 fold. We are

focusing on physical health, emotional health and social health, so each information station provides walkers with useful information and

gift-bag tools to build on all three themes. We look forward to seeing you on the 27th as you step up to make a statement for ending domestic violence. Solutions are not easy, but we know that setting strong policy, capturing media information and speaking out are all fires that ignite hope for survivors. To kindle a united front, the Ft. Huachuca victim advocate created “Purple Friday,” in

hopes that wearing purple once a week throughout October will send a message of support and empowerment to people who suffer in silence. Purple Friday sends a message of respect and hope, so please join us by wearing purple clothing or a purple ribbon during the month of October – you can stop by Army community Service to pick up a purple ribbon lapel pin – we’d enjoy having you visit. We are looking for your support to become a strong voice for ending domestic violence, so WALK THE TALK, wear purple and make a statement of encouragement for survivors. We can change the way society responds to domestic violence, and we can support victim advocacy. For additional information and to register for WALK THE TALK, please contact Family Advocacy at (520) 533-2993.

Here's why leaves change color in the fall! The simple answer is that most of those pigments are always there, serving important physiological functions. When the plant prepares to shed the leaves, it pulls out some of the more valuable chemicals and stores them in the stems and roots. Chlorophyll production stops and it is bleached by sunlight, exposing the other pigments that the chlorophyll had been masking. In montane plants (those in cool, moist zones usually dominated by evergreen trees), it's cold temperatures that trigger dormancy and leaf fall, but the same process occurs in many tropical plants in response to drying at the end of the rainy season.
