Psycho Ceramics, also known as pyschoceramics, is a line of highly collect-ible, freakish ceramic figurines imported from Japan by Kreiss Company in the 1960s.

Murray Kreiss founded the Kreiss Company in San Diego in 1939, originally calling the company Murray Kreiss & Sons Company.

Following World War II, Kreiss changed his life when he decided to import ceramic novelty items from

Japan. Beginning in 1946, Kreiss imported a variety of Japanese ceramic pieces, but one of his most icon-

    Ross AuctionFrom Front Page

decorative arts auction; a single consignment from Charleston, W.V., held April 18.

“We s chedu le auctions months in advance,” Kevin Ross said. “We had already advertised this auction, and already had quite a few bids placed online when on-site bidding was no longer an option, but we decided to go ahead with it.”

No worries. Buyers showed up en mass. More than 6,000 bidders registered online, and the online bidding was aggressive. “With people at home missing the ability to attend and buy at auctions, they seemed quite comfortable bidding online,” Ross said. Items which would be expensive or difficult to ship did not always fair as well as they would with in-house buyers and some of those lots were passed. However, Ross said, “many of the items that did sell reached higher final bids than we had anticipated.”

Smaller, easy to ship decorative items were vied for with enthusiasm. A 22 inch,

signed Mori Sosen Japanese antique charger or plate wearing a monkey motif ; despite a signif icant crack, garnered 27 bids on its way to selling for $7,800. Prices include a buyer’s premium.

A 17th century Japanese rectangular lacquer casket with a domed l id also surpassed its pre-sale estimate of $2,000 to $4,000 when it sold for $5 ,100 . Hav ing engraved copper hinges as well as a handle and lock, the chest was decorated in gold hiramaki-e and inland mother-of-pearl.

A beautiful bronze mounted bloodstone dish with ruby jewels that was 10 inches long by 7 inches wide and 1 ¾ inches high was bid to $2,880 against a $1,000 to $2,000 estimate, while a diminutive (just 6 ¾ inches tall) Viennese enamel on silver lidded urn with a marked top rim featuring a courting scene made $1,920.

A miniature (5 inches by 5 ¾ inches) Art Nouveau style painting in a wooden frame made $3,240 against a $400 to $800 estimate. “We are not really sure why this painting took off like it did, but it

had lots of interest before the auction,” Ross said. A regal white with gray porcelain hawk figurine wearing a Royal Copenhagen Denmark mark and standing 15 inches tall did well garnering an $840 final price against a $200 high estimate. .

Some larger items did find new homes. A Carrier statue clock and barometer standing 76 inches tall was bid to $7,800, and a highly stylized Victorian Renaissance Revival inlaid parlor table featuring three horns and pages of music decorating its top made $4,800, doubling its high estimate. This table was 27 inches by

    31 inches.Definitely requiring

some major space was the Royen 1896 carved Paris Exposition dining room set consisting of no less than 10 side chairs, two armchairs, a massive table, two sideboards and a buffet or china cabinet which sold for $28,800.

For such a large auction, bidding was steady throughout the sale. “Online platforms cap the number of items that can be sold in a day to 1,200 lots’” Ross said. “This sale had 1,185 lots, but the bidders stayed through to the end.”

ashtrays, cups, and nap-kin holders. The compa-ny also offered ceramic dogs, cats, Nudeniks, Elegant Heirs, and ori-ental lady figurines.

Unl ike many Japanese imports, Kreiss did not put paper or foil stickers on any of its imported ceramic ware, including its Psycho Ceramic figu-rines, but the company did ink stamp “Kreiss and Co.” on early pieces and “Kreiss Corp.” on later pieces, which helps to date and identify Kreiss ceramic pieces.

There may be some Kreiss Psycho Ceramic figures that are not stamped, but a good rule of thumb is to only buy stamped pieces since an unstamped piece may be a poor imi-tation or reproduction rip-off.

Murray Kreiss died young, and his son, Norman Kreiss, took over the family busi-ness, gradually moving it away from cheap, Japanese imports. By the late 1960s or early 1970s, Kreiss and Co. totally stopped import-ing and selling cheap Japanese ceramic ware. T o d a y , K r e i s s Enterprises is famous in California as a premier home furnishings com-pany, importing furni-ture and decorative items from Japan, Hong Kong, China, Italy, S p a i n , a n d Thailand. And Kreiss has showrooms through-out America.

One look at a Psycho Ceramic figurine and you’ll understand why these cheap Japanese imports from the 1960s (which sold for about $1 when new) sell today, half a century later, between $35 and $100 on secondary markets; however, the average price is around $80.

While all Psycho Ceramic figurines pos-sess a recognizable 1960s kitschiness about them, collectors truly enjoy owning the fun and increasingly rare pieces. Kreiss gave the world humor when so many bad things were happening, and collec-tors are still fascinated by these humorous piec-es.

In fact, Kress Enterprises website states Michael Kreiss, current owner and grandson of Murray Kreiss, is an avid collec-tor of Kreiss Psycho Ceramic figurines. He enjoys looking at his col-lection and knowing his grandfather brought so many smiles to so many people with these funny, disturbing figurines.

Above: Kreiss Psycho Ceramic Santa, circa 1960s, is guar-anteed to scare children at Christmas. This figurine is val-ued at $95.

Above: Psycho Ceramic eggcup by Kreiss, circa 1960s, valued at $38.

Below: Kreiss “Fat Santa” Psycho Ceramic figurine from the 1960s that is valued at $125.

Below: “Keep Your Nose Out of My Business” Psycho

Ceramic ashtray, circa 1960s, that was offered on

    eBay for $150.

Right: Cute Psycho Ceramic Christmas cop who is just aching to

bludgeon someone with his billy club. This Kreiss collectible is valued

    at $110.

Above: This weirdly-rare Kreiss Psycho Ceramic is called “No-Goodnik. He is seen with his two “helpers.”
